I write spoiler free review, so keep on reading if you want to know more about the anime from an outsider perspective! (I actually finished this anime on 5/17/2019, the same day I released this review. I have updated it so that it corresponds with my end thoughts of the show)
I originally saw Revisions on Netflix, and I saw that the story summary was interesting. I have seen other reviews bashing the anime, and I'm not sure if their past experiences with anime do justice for judging this one. I'll explain my rating for each category.
Story: 7 (was originally a 6)
The story is not as
...
exciting or motivating as other anime. There is definitely conflict build up, but so far there has just been a constant loop of resolution and downfall. It makes the show itself difficult to watch. Edit: The story does actually get somewhere, but it is rushed towards the end of the series. I changed the score from a 6 to 7 because it does actually have decent conflict resolution.
Art: 4
You may have seen already, but this show is mostly CGI artwork. It's not your typical hand drawn stuff, so it kinda hurts your eyes a bit. Nevertheless, the CGI team definitely put effort into it, instead of just giving them stick figure movement. (Think RWBY from Roosterteeth, but a little less combat)
Sound: 7
The music for the most part is pretty good, and the sound effects line up pretty well with what has been animated. However, there's not that much depth into the sound effects, as they are a bit simple.
Character: 7 (was originally a 6)
Some characters you'll hate, and there's one specifically you'll hate even more. The main protagonist, Daisuke Dojima, is portrayed as a young student with a major "hero complex". The thing is, that's not even a joke the writers were trying to make. He actually acknowledges that he really is a hero (even though he lacks the characteristics), and even his friends in the show point it out. If you've ever seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, he might as well be Shinji but with a huge power issue. All he wants to do is get in the robot...; Edit: Character development went along with the plot of the story, so just as I did with the story, I changed the score to a 7 because the characters find someway to grow.
Enjoyment: 8 (was originally a 6)
There's not a lot of suspense, and the action is alright. I'm very big with action/adventure anime, but this show just poses to be a wannabe Neon Genesis Evangelion, the main parallels being that the main characters pilot mechs, and their organization is a mysterious and unknown entity that tries to control conflict, Revisions being AHRV, and NGE being NERV. Edit: I enjoyed it all in the very end simply because the story eventually came together with the characters (kind of like how Durarara is all scrambled until the last few episodes).
Overall, it's not right to bash this anime for being poorly conceived, as it has a great concept, but it was not executed with a good foundation. It feels as if though Netflix just needed another show. I would recommend watching this only if you are comfortable with a character that has the shortest foresight possible. Thanks for reading and let me know if this review was useful! I'll keep writing them if they are! Edit: I just wanted to add one last note. Revisions was not a bad anime at all. If they learned how to pace their character development, it would've been a lot better (Character flaws were portrayed a lot longer than character overcoming the flaws)
