i'd be happy to eat my words in the future because as i've said i love hxh and i hope he pulls it off but for now i can't ignore the fact i haven't enjoyed reading the manga in a long time and i'm reflecting it in my current rating. it's very subject to change depending on how things continue to play out as all my ratings are. nothing set in stone, just an accurate reflection of my feelings at the moment and it can change pretty much as easily as chapter to chapter.
doesn't have anything to do with a lack of attention span. i've read and watched through all of one piece multiple times and hxh is chump change in comparison as far as how much of a time dedication that is so my attention span is more than capable of reading it. if i was rating the manga from just the content the anime adapted i would've rated it probably an 8 so it would be very close.. only giving the anime that extra point because of aspects like music and animation which are great where the manga art in comparison isn't at as high of a level. the decrease in rating is pretty much solely for the manga content as of late.
then there's obviously the infamous text walls i briefly mentioned:
this one is obviously an extreme example but there's many, many pages that look very similar and it's honestly just a burden to read. i don't mind reading a lot of words but not when it's a manga and supposed to be a visual medium yet there's just a couple sketches on the page surrounded by a plaster of words both inner monologue and dialogue. i honestly find it a bit disrespectful to kinda just fully abandon the entire art aspect of manga. obviously i'm aware of togashi's condition and i sympathize with him and understand why it's like that but as far as just judging the series by solely what's on paper, it's very fair to find it unbearable to read.
i still think highly of hxh. i have the anime rated a 9 and borderline near my top 10 but as far as the manga goes i think it's reached a point where my love for it in the first 300 something chapters is being overshadowed by how much i've dreaded reading it since then. my ratings are also just inherently harsher than most so even though i have it at a 6 that's still a decently solid rating for me so if anything that rating being a 6 even though i've not enjoyed it much for awhile is a testament to how much i loved it before.
i think also retouching on the topic that while they are trying to take over han, their goal is still unification so they are trying to show the residents of han that they mean to work together with them and aren't just there to slaughter them. i think having tou and also the hi shin unit there has helped to create some trust there although the last chapter proves the han people are still skeptical about their true intentions.
