yeah i think that just shows the differing opinion we have on the matter perfectly. i'm very much aware of the "potential" that this arc has and that the remainder of hxh has as a whole. but it's exactly that, "potential", not actual content we've gotten to see. i agree the quantity of stuff going on is crazy high but quantity doesn't always equal quality and so far there has been many, many things put on the table like you mentioned with beyond, the troupe, hisoka, chrollo, the princes, the heil-ly and many other things but it's all been put on the table yet little of it has actually been explored in depth yet. it feels like togashi is trying his best to jam pack every thing possible in at once because he's aware time isn't exactly on his side and he needs to get as much published as quickly as possible and i feel like that clearly shows in how much stuff he dumps in every chapter as far as new things to the world but with so many different pieces being added into such little space, there's way less room to give as much depth to these aspects like he did such a great job of in chimera ant. i agree chimera ant has way less going on than dark continent but that's not a bad thing. in fact, the fact that chimera ant added way less things allowed togashi the time to really flesh out the ants especially meruem as well as other characters both main, side, and new characters like komugi. and the opposite is happening in dark continent where we're getting a lot more varying factors to the content yes but each of them has much less depth to it than the aspects of previous arcs and i think the depth added to these things was what made hxh so great and not just the fact there's a lot of things going on at once.

i'd be happy to eat my words in the future because as i've said i love hxh and i hope he pulls it off but for now i can't ignore the fact i haven't enjoyed reading the manga in a long time and i'm reflecting it in my current rating. it's very subject to change depending on how things continue to play out as all my ratings are. nothing set in stone, just an accurate reflection of my feelings at the moment and it can change pretty much as easily as chapter to chapter.

doesn't have anything to do with a lack of attention span. i've read and watched through all of one piece multiple times and hxh is chump change in comparison as far as how much of a time dedication that is so my attention span is more than capable of reading it. if i was rating the manga from just the content the anime adapted i would've rated it probably an 8 so it would be very close.. only giving the anime that extra point because of aspects like music and animation which are great where the manga art in comparison isn't at as high of a level. the decrease in rating is pretty much solely for the manga content as of late.

i think for me it's purely just based on my own enjoyment. there's many, many issues that i can point to but it all narrows down to when i sit down to read a hxh chapter i feel like i'm completing a chore rather than entertaining myself with enjoyable media. i do think there's some great stuff in the recent chapters but i also feel like we've been on this ship for an eternity and when you really ask yourself the question "what exactly has happened of much importance on this ship that's actually had a resolution and isn't just a constant build up to reaching the dark continent which i'm still convinced we'll never see?". don't get me wrong, i'm all here for build ups and all but this arc has been like 70 chapters already and even with filling the entire page with twice as much text than actual drawings, we're still on the boat and doesn't look like we're reaching the destination anytime soon. i don't find the princes and the succession war all that intriguing either. i think it has some potential but not enough and pair that with togashi's condition limiting him, the product put on paper is pretty meh imo. especially when you compare it to earlier arcs. like 70 chapters into chimera ant and we'd been introduced and explored to so much in just that time and in comparison this is such a step backwards. comparing it to the best arc obviously makes it more extreme but you get the point.

then there's obviously the infamous text walls i briefly mentioned:

this one is obviously an extreme example but there's many, many pages that look very similar and it's honestly just a burden to read. i don't mind reading a lot of words but not when it's a manga and supposed to be a visual medium yet there's just a couple sketches on the page surrounded by a plaster of words both inner monologue and dialogue. i honestly find it a bit disrespectful to kinda just fully abandon the entire art aspect of manga. obviously i'm aware of togashi's condition and i sympathize with him and understand why it's like that but as far as just judging the series by solely what's on paper, it's very fair to find it unbearable to read.

i still think highly of hxh. i have the anime rated a 9 and borderline near my top 10 but as far as the manga goes i think it's reached a point where my love for it in the first 300 something chapters is being overshadowed by how much i've dreaded reading it since then. my ratings are also just inherently harsher than most so even though i have it at a 6 that's still a decently solid rating for me so if anything that rating being a 6 even though i've not enjoyed it much for awhile is a testament to how much i loved it before.

i think with the most recent chapter 811 just dropping it looks like and i'm hopeful they're getting back to the main invasion now and the side story in nanyou to show the qin and han people building a relationship is winding down and won't last very long. they'll probably still stay at nanyou for a bit but i think they are getting back to the main event now which is good. i agree it's a nice extra touch to show that interaction to really drive home the unification aspect but i think they can do that and keep it pretty short or like you said even have that happen after the arc is over to show they've come to understand each other
kxlel02 Sep 19, 2024 5:51 PM
i've found tou's stance on things to be very interesting. he seems to know, or at least think he know's, something that no one else present does and i think that knowledge of his is gonna wind up being the turning point in the attack on shintei.

i think also retouching on the topic that while they are trying to take over han, their goal is still unification so they are trying to show the residents of han that they mean to work together with them and aren't just there to slaughter them. i think having tou and also the hi shin unit there has helped to create some trust there although the last chapter proves the han people are still skeptical about their true intentions.

decided to go ahead and read up using the early english translations. so far the quality ranges quite a bit depending on the chapter from the 4 I read but none of them are too bad. The quality of the scan is definitely not the greatest though but even that isn't really that bad
kxlel02 Sep 5, 2024 5:12 PM
oh man don't even get me started on hxh. that's a rabbit hole i don't even know where to begin when it comes to being on breaks and hiatus. you'd be happy with getting any chapters in the span of years with that
kxlel02 Sep 3, 2024 4:06 PM
i mean he's been grinding like crazy for nearly two decades so i think he deserves the breaks regardless. prep for the big arc that follows the current one is also probably a contributing factor. he's still got a very long way to go historically so taking the time to rest and make sure he can keep kicking for awhile longer to complete the story is smart and i'm all for it. rather wait a little longer between chapters than never get a finished story
kxlel02 Aug 29, 2024 4:26 PM
damn i kinda went awhile before seeing this my bad. i noticed hara has been taking a lot of breaks recently. or at least a lot for him. 2 weeks between a lot of the recent chapters. i don't really mind but it is a bit disappointing when i open up the page excited expecting a new chapter only for there not to be. i'm fine with just giving him time to cook though
kxlel02 Aug 5, 2024 8:51 PM
it all makes me miss being able to binge it. back when i could finish an arc and know there's hundreds of chapters ahead of me and i could consume the seemingly never-ending amount of content that's still to come. being caught up and waiting with anticipation every week to get a chapter makes it feel like it's taking forever to get through things. at the same time it is kinda cool though to read weekly and have that feeling of unknown as well
KokuHD Aug 1, 2024 5:53 PM
I would say that it really pulled me in at episode 8, but the whole anime is really great!

kxlel02 Jul 31, 2024 8:30 AM
yo i've read up to 803 for kingdom now and you were right. shit got crazy once we hit the 800 chapter mark. next arc is set up to be some top notch stuff
heitorpaixao Jul 29, 2024 4:06 PM
I really recommend it, but there's a correct order to watch it in. There are several anime and I intend to watch them all. kkkkkkk If I were you, I'd start right away. The first anime is older and then Ufotable takes it over and improves the animation.
Shubhamb1996 Jul 17, 2024 9:25 AM
Yeah, really excited for it
