Juusenki L-Gaim

Both shows are directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the father of the gundam franchise and mecha anime visonary, and both shows are him at his most lighthearted, but also at his directoral best. Both shows follow a group of really likeable young people through a spanning war. In Turn A, it's about going back to your roots, and in L.Gaim, it's about rebellion and trying to find your place in the world, as well as following your destiny. Both shows feature a great deal of humor and are both genuianlly funny, because you really start to like and care about these characters. Neither show really focuses much on the mecha either and are more character dramas/adventure shows, so those usually uninterested in mecha anime may find these series easier to get into.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
add

Both of these wonderful series are very unique among mecha anime, in that they do what most don't do that often: Mix two polar oppisate genres (Science Fiction and Fantasy), and do it wonderfully well. The mecha desgins for both have a royal, fantasy asthetic to them, and both shows have very eleborate settings and well developed characters and themes. Even if you aren't particularly interested in mecha anime as a genre, you will find something to like in both of these.

Shigofumi
add

Both Shigofumi and Kino are a series of short stories about the sometimes gentle, sometimes darker side of human life and nature. While Shigofumi deals with the feels of the living left by the dead and the last words of the departed, Kino is about life, and the many sides of human nature. Both Kino and Fumika are detached observers witnessing the events that unfold, though Kino tends to offer more dry sarcasim and commentary, since Fumika is fairly quiet. Both Hermes and Kanaka give their shares of insights to the events while serving up regular amounts of comic relief to the sometimes dark stories.

Both shows focus on the slow unravaling of a mystery and conspracy through police work and investigation, with small bits of action in between. Both have a case of interesting characters, great music, and high production values.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
add

Both shows are kinda throwbacks to 70s style super robot anime, but Gurren Langan does it with a lot more style and mordern sensiblities. Also, while GaoGaiGar is kinda a superhero story of mythological proprotions, Gurren-Lagann is a coming of age story that takes a super robot stable (drills) and turns it into a metaphor for life, that starts out as a battle for the freedom of those living underground and ends up involving all those who live in the universe, all the while Simon tries to find his own meaning and purpose in his life, and follow his destiny.GaoGaiGar on the other hand, follows the classic monster of the week formula of super robot shows of the 70s, but it does it with a lot of energy and over the top flair, like Gurren-Lagann. Also, like Gurren Laggan, it has a colorful cast of characters you will get to know and love, and the mecha desgins are quite pleasing to the eyes. However, Gurren-Lagann is a lot more "serious" then GaoGaiGar is (Not counting FINAL), but that's another topic of discusstion.

Mushishi

Mononoke
add

Both stories involed a man wandering around japan carrying around a wooden box and deals with supernatural entities and helps people along the way. Mononoke is a lot darker and a bit more cynical then Mushishi is, and the Medicine Seller is more of an anti hero, but that doesn't keep him from being an enjoyable, interesting character. The stories in both series are interesting, each being self contained, though Monoke tells it's stories in a series of 5 arcs. Also, Mononoke's stories are always more on the horror side of things, whereas Mushishi's are usually more emotional.
