Shoujo Tsubaki ~ The Camelia Girl
In my opinion, the mass array of people that have recently learned of this manga through the most popular social media app, are greately misunderstanding Shoujo Tsubaki, Suehiro Maruo, and ero-guro as a genre in total. I believe this story works best and most beautifully when seen for what it is, and not as a subject that supposedly holds a deeper, more sinister meaning.
Shoujo Tsubaki is a perfect example of a tragicomedy - or a black comedy. The characters, part of a freakshow, naturally are witty, absurd, queer, sadomasochistic, and utterly strange. The story centers around Midori, a sweet
...
young girl who becomes part of the circus and is the recipient of all the surrealism and the body horror that happens around her. Just like in any unexplainable dream, the chapters take you on a non-linear journey, brought to life by Maruo's incredible artistry and talent in showcasing the horrific happenings in a beautifully breathtaking way. The reader is left feeling so many things one after the other. It is undeniable that the manga is an excellent showcase of ero-guro: oozing with eroticism and lingering, elongating, terrifying bodies and gore. The expressions Maruo is able to create add a lot of sentiment, and the aestheticism is unparalleled. Men and women alike are gorgeously drawn in careful lines that hold a lot of character into them. The tragic tale of Midori is a mixture of all the forementioned things, and I would definitely recommend it to any lover of this subtle kind of horror.
In the end, even the disturbing freakshow may end up looking like a warm family.

The feeling of an eternal, slow summer where it feels like nothing really happens and yet, you later realize this summer will probably have a big impact on your life.
This is the ideal anime for the confused, the lost, the what-the-hell-am-i-doing-in-my-life 20 somethings of this world, who feel like they are waiting for the next summer to come and change something in their boring and seemingly useless lives.
NHK will drag you in from the first seconds, you become addicted, you laugh, you feel the dread creep up on you as you can't help but sympathize (or relate to) the main character, Satou. It
...
could be better described as the anime of life as a whole. It has the feeling of life, the slow unchanging days, the fun things in between, the sad things that outweigh the good. Then NHK gives you few strong punches one by one, and tears to compliment them.
The representation of the trauma and state of the human mind, as well as mental illnesses, is next to outstanding in this anime. It serves as a reminder than it doesn't matter if you have a job, are a NEET, are married, are addicted to video games, if you laugh, cry, or do nothing at all, the fear of solitude, hopelessness, depression, they all can creep up on you at any moment. And it teaches the most important thing of all: we all need someone to stand by our sides, and that someone exists for everyone out there.
The art doesn't try to be anything more than it is, and it has its own charming and interesting moments when needed. The music is beautiful and brings memories of those lazy summer days.
Just be careful not to be caught into any conspiracies.

Damn, this hit me right in the feels. What a beautiful movie about the simple love between two very different teenagers.
There are a lot of yaoi/shounen ai manga that are a bit more on the serious and realistic side, but not enough anime. The few yaoi anime I've seen have badly drawn art and are too... obnoxious to me. Meanwhile this movie is not a yaoi targeted towards yaoi fans in general but is a movie anyone could watch. It's just a movie with a sweet, same-sex relationship.
The art is freaking gorgeous, it looks like watercolor illustrations and it's very smooth. Haven't seen an
...
anime this pretty in a while!
(If only I had someone telling me the same things Kusakabe was telling Sajou, I could die happily)
I can't suggest it enough. ❤

I've heard many things about this anime before watching it. Since I love a good coming-of-age story, I had quite a lot of hope for it, since most people that have seen it describe it as a masterpiece.
The first episode left me confused; but I still enjoyed the overall feel and atmosphere. The voice acting was a bit strange and different, but along with the (amazing) songs on the background and the outstanding art, it really gave it a nostalgic feeling. I loved that.
Now as the episodes progressed and I started to understand more about the characters, I liked it more; especially a
...
few scenes in particular left me in awe (I don't want to spoil but that one scene were Mamimi -who also happened to be my favorite character- sees TV-kun as a God really made me feel something).
I love how it leaves a lot of things for the watcher to interpret instead of just shoving all the "I'm an adult now" talk into your face. After all, each one of us understands a piece of art in a different way, therefore this anime can have a lot of different meanings depending on the watcher's experiences.
The only drawback is that it gets confusing at times. I'm saying this having only just watched it once, maybe if I watch it a second time I will understand more. I enjoyed the art and feel of the show more than the story itself.
If you have some time to spare, I'd say to give this anime a try.
(p.s. since it's from Gainax I did get a lot of Evangelion feels lol. Also watch out for multiple pop culture references in this show)
