Hayate the combat butler is at its core a comedy but its genre is not exclusively comedy. It can also make you cry. The romantic moments are mostly subtle, like a gaze or hug but it is nicely done. There is a bit of supernatural stuff in the story as well. There are references, breaking fourth wall, parody on various animes, manga, TV shows,popular culture but the manga never takes itself seriously. It is never boring, and even if you do not get most of the reference, like me, you will still enjoy it.

When I read the reviews of NHK I will have to say I was impressed. It was a different story not the classic tale where the protagonist is on a mission to....wait, he is on a mission to change his ways of hikikomori. Every anime has basically the same trope and I am fine by that but in this series it was less pronounced and I really liked it.
It was really funny and I could have given it a flawless '10' if it had not stretched the story to second season when ending it at fist will be all the same, come to ... |
