THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
Anime based on video games don't usually work out. Recent examples would be Blade & Soul and Gunslinger Stratos. God Eater is based on a PSP game, yet it had a lot of hype surrounding it. Mostly because it was being animated by Ufotable.
When the pilot finally aired, most people were disappointed. I wasn't, because I didn't have any expectations in the first place.
Story: It's hard not to compare this anime to Shingeki no Kyojin. In 2070, humans live in a city surrounded by walls to protect them from monsters called Aragami. The people that kill Aragami are called God Eaters.
...
God Eaters wield living weapons called God Arcs. Which are made from the same Oracle cells that the Aragami evolved from.
If the Aragami are supposed to be scary, they do a terrible job of it. They look like Disney Monsters with beards. Titans are way scarier.
The main character is Utsugi Lenka, who is a new-type. Only a select few are able to wield the new-type god arcs. This is basically their way of calling him 'the chosen one'. As usual he's a reckless idiot that is hell bent on destroying all Aragami. Why does that sound familiar?
In episode 3, they introduce another new-type. I will get to her clothes later. To show how cool she is, they have her fight Aragami on a plane. I love how she jumps off the plane, with no fear of falling, kills the Aragami and just magically ends up on the plane again. Because Fuck Gravity.
In episode 5, their expedition didn't go quite as planned. They went to destroy a type of Aragami called Vajra. But the strongest Vajra out there killed all the other Vajra and then went for the humans. Why is this Vajra so strong? Because he's black.
Unlike in SnK, we know the origin of the Aragami. They were created by humans. The leader of the project is now the director of Far East Branch. So that asshole creates these monsters. He then sits comfortably in a safe place, while innocent humans die outside the walls. This would be okay if he allowed said human to enter the safe city. But NO, only humans that can wield god arcs or their families are allowed. Isn't that convenient you sad excuse for a human being.
At some points they introduce minor characters and kill them off almost instantly and expect us to feel bad. I did cry, but only because I was wasting my life watching this trash. If you want a better plot, go watch hentai.
Art: First the character designs- The faces of the characters themselves aren't badly designed. But their clothes are something else. The main character wears a short jacket that looks suspiciously similar to what the survey corps wear. The wimpy classmate wears clothes that prove how lame he is. The women, specifically Alisa, wear clothes that are impractical. They cover only half their body. There is no way those clothes would help in a fight. The only reason for this is F A N S E R V I C E. Not even good fanservice.
Next the animation- This was the part everyone looked forward to. Ufotable just finished FSN: Unlimited Blade Works. The best part of that was the animation. If God eater was animated like that, maybe I would actually enjoy it a bit. But It isn't, instead they decided to use 3D animation. It's not as bad as the 3D we usually see. It's definitely done better, but I personally didn't like it.
Sound: Both the Opening and the Ending are forgettable. The Voice acting though is the only decent thing about this anime. Hirata Hiraoki is excellent as Lindow. Maaya Sakomoto and Nakai kazuya do a good job too. The OST isn't bad either, especially in episode 5.
Characters: I don't see much character development. None of the characters are well written. The main character is just like Eren, except I actually gave a shit about Eren. Lindow is pretty cool. Not as cool as Levi but still cool. The female characters are all terribly written. I don't think the writers have ever actually met a female human being.
Well I'm dropping this.
inb4 "It gets better!"
It know it doesn't.
This anime is literally a meme.
Enjoyment: Barely 4/10
Pros-
The weapons bleed when they're cut in half.
It's only 13 episodes long and not 25.
Racism
Some decent voice acting
Cons: Everything else
Overall: Only watch this if you hate yourself.
Don't waste your time/10
