[Minimal general spoilers - the same you'd see in the summary on the back of a book]
I only recommend this series for more mature audiences or adults due to its somewhat suggestive themes of war, depression, PTSD, suicide, etc.
I will keep this review short and sweet
86 is basically Code Geass: Akito the Exiled but done to the same quality as Code Geass itself.
Anyone who's seen both Code Geass and Akito knows that Akito didn't hold up to the same level as Code Geass did.
Personally, I liked Akito a lot as it is extremely similar to 86 in terms of the plot, characters, and world -
...
being that of a race of people being treated as pawns for another and used as cannon fodder in a war. One character from the "upper" racer wanting to help those of the "lower" race, which they are of course very skeptical of.
The big differences between Akito and 86 however, are that, 86 has a LOT more character development, is a lot slower in pacing, and isn't being tied back to an existing plot or series - that of Code Geass.
So if the concept of Akito seemed interesting to you when you watched it or the idea of seeing the clash between people and pawn - whilst getting the views, thoughts, and perspectives from both sides of the fence, mental trauma, PTSD, depression, themes of war, some cool battle mechs and robots (no this isn't a mecha show, it's a show that has mechs in it - like Code Geass), AI, character development, etc. seems interesting, give this series a try.
If you like series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Violet Evergarden, or the politics and issues between different races like that from Attack on Titan, Code Geass or anything in between, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this, should you have the patience for a VERY slow show, I'm reiterating this because this is probably slower than anything you've ever watched before:
If we include seasons 1 and 2, you're basically watching 23 episodes of ~75%+ of character development 25% everything else that builds up to a massive climax, so you're basically watching like 17 episodes of character development. This is why I'm never offended if someone calls this show boring, too slow, etc.
I know I did a shit job of explaining it, but if anything from above seems remotely interesting to you, just give it a shot, you'll know if it's for you pretty early on and worst case, it'll be just a little too slow or boring for your liking, or maybe it's too dark and depressing, who knows
