Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! LOVE!

These anime poke fun at their genres in fun, lighthearted ways while still including likeable characters. This second season of Binan also includes twin characters with a similar dynamic to the twins in Ouran.

Happy Sugar Life
add

Horror anime which seem to rely more on psychological shock than visual shock, though you might get some of the visual as well. A similar "what the hell" mentality is incited when watching either for the first time. There are characters who can be described as yandere in both with a single-minded dedication to their love.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira

These OVA series are part of franchises that have nothing to do with magical girls, yet decided to go ahead and take their characters and do a magical girl parody anyway. They are fun as silly AUs of their original source, appreciating the characters in new contexts, as well as enjoyable for seeing the magical girl genre poked fun at.

Digimon Adventure
add

We have kids wandering around having fights with their cute monsters while exploring and forming bonds with their monster partners and others around them. Of course, with Pokemon it's more slice of life in a world strange to us, while in Digimon it's more adventure mostly in a world strange to the protaganists. There are elements of everyday life/adventure in each though. Despite being quite different in some aspects, both series have a similar late 90s feel and are really fun, doing a great job at breaking ground for what were fresh franchises at the time.

Mairimashita! Iruma-kun

An unfortunate kid gets thrown into another world (literally or figuratively) where he gains friends and power somehow. These series throw a shounen cloak on what at the bare bones seems like a dark/gritty story and make it fun.

Come here for your cute guys with sad backstories. Of course Weiß is much edgier, in terms of backstory and actual story, but if you're watching one for the characters and the bl subtext (no actual text) you'll probably be happy with the other.

Find your off the wall 1990s anime humor right here! Our main characters are starting school, one after being an idol and the other after being a shut in. You might think they they're dissimilar, but they both have cheerful attitudes and do what they want in humorous fashions, forget the system. There are also their companion characters, cute animals in one and cute missiles (yes) in the other. You'll also find a character with their own story which seems to struggle much more than the main becoming just as if not more interesting at times than them and hey, that's the joke....

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
add

Was Madoka is the first dark magical girl show? Don't forget how dark Sailor Moon got at times. This season -- the third -- in particular reminds me of Madoka and vice-versa. The friendship between the cheerful pink-haired girls and lonely dark-haired girls have similar vibes. Certain scenes with the same pair from Madoka and the canon yuri pair from S bring a very, very similar feel -- you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen both. Overall, you'll get action, drama, and friendship, sometimes yuri-ish or outright yuri relationships from both series, and if you like one you'll probably like the other.

Death Note
add

Higurashi and Death Note both have a plot that keeps the audience engaged rather than relying solely on horror elements for shock value. Though those elements are certainly present, they don't seem like the catalyst to keep people tuning in. They also involve mystery, though in Higurashi the audience tries to solve it, while in Death Note, the audience knows the answers, giving a similar feeling to Higurashi on a rewatch. On top of the interesting story, the characters of each series are very well developed.
