KyoAni does it again(after small mishaps)! Let's get right down to it!
=== STORY: 7 =
While it's not anything out of the ordinary for a slice of life anime - especially with such a narrow focus - the pacing was perfect. The amount of side dishes we had on top of the main dish - school band practice - was just right. It was obvious what was the story about and what was a "bonus". No sidesteps - pure focus on the main story.
In short - an ok story that you'd expect from Slice of Life told in an ok way.
=== ART: 7 ===
The animation,
...
the characters, the hair physics, the backgrounds, the shading, the play on light... It was all executed perfectly. The amount of details from first few episodes began to diminish over time until we hit the rock bottom at the finale; don't get me wrong it was still well and above 90% of stuff I've watched so far - the first 6 episodes just spoiled me a little too much. The amount of effects felt a little over the top at some moments - 2 scenes to be exact - but other than that it was all well done.
It's beautiful, it's well done, it felt crisp and alive. It was nowhere close to Makoto Shinkai's photorealism, though. It would be an 8 if the amount of details was the same throughout all 13 episodes.
=== SOUND: 8 ===
It was really good. Instrumental flukes were captured perfectly, voice acting was pretty much perfect, the ambient in most scenes was ok, but the music... Music felt flat for some reason - I've even rewatched the musical parts on studio-grade equipment and it still felt flat. I'd give 7 for sound but the flukes in the practice scenes(sound acting?) and voice acting raised the grade to 8.
=== CHARACTER: 8 ===
Characters were good. They were not flat, their struggles and emotions were shown. Their designs made it easy to distinguish them from each other - every single one of the ~70 members of the band had some features unique to them - despite the fact that most did not even matter when it came to the story of the main heroine(And that bunch was not the only group portrayed!). Their behavior felt so natural and each had so little screen time that it's hard to even talk about archetypes and such - 13 episodes we were given felt like a glimpse on a small part of the cast's lives.
8 for the huge quantity of differing characters, talking about quality of such small samples feels like a waste of time. The only character we got to see fully was the Main Heroine. BUT this is not psychological drama and we don't need to know the full story of every single band member so it's all good.
=== ENJOYMENT: 10 ===
There's not much I can say about this one - I really enjoyed this series and I don't regret even a single minute spent(rarely happens!). I did not even yawn once! Watched with my eyes glued to the screen, and my heart was pounding by the finale. 10/10!
===== OVERALL: 9 =====
It does what it had to do great - despite the story being simple, despite the small mishaps, despite this and that - I really enjoyed the anime and that's all that really matters. It's eyecandy and a balm for the soul - especially after that monstrosity that is Owari no Seraph ;_; WATCH THIS IF YOU DO NOT LIKE OVERLY COMPLICATED STORIES AND LIKE YOUR THINGS HAPPY!

SPOILER FREE REVIEW, since I'm actually reviewing something with a resemblance of a story for my 2nd review. Let's get down to it! :3
===STORY: 2 ===
I may not know a lot about storytelling(I guess I'm one of those that like every story if it's told by a master narrator), but I can tell when the pacing is ///bad///. That's all I have to say - a pacing of 8 years in one episode to 15 minutes in 3 episodes(OUT OF 12(!))). Close to no back-story, let's just say this one could've been so much more if it only got 26 or more episodes -
...
with proper narration and such. There was too much unfolding at once, some parts were rushed and a lot was skipped and just left there hanging. After 12 episodes we... don't get to know anything. We are awkwardly rushed to the main-story part, witness the stupidity of the MC and a ton of stuff that does not matter to avert you from the obvious rush just to see 5 episodes of "battle" at once.
"Continuity? WHATTHEHELLISTHAT???" - WiT studios, probably.
2 for potential, and at least some parts made sense. like 1 out of 5, but still.
===ART: 1 ===
Let me just say this - some oil paint backgrounds were actually pretty ok... but that's like 1 out of 20. Did these people not know metropolises DO NOT dissolve this way? Did they not know that buildings absolutely CANNOT bend 40 or more degrees and still stand? And what the hell is up with rust on STAINLESS STEEL?
Animation was lackluster - most fights were just static panels with sound added to them. And even when they were not - animation seemed choppy.
Characters were flat, operating on only 2 layers of light at most. Barely any 3d effects happened. I hate CGI overdose as much as the next guy, but a little bit won't hurt. Most of the scenery was static, characters were static/blinking(they didn't even bother with some enemies - they just instantly appear behind the protag to... tap them on the shoulder?).
Also - that's not how weapons work. Weapons don't blink into their final position after preliminary movements appeared, not all the time(it could happen on a VERY powerful enemy occasionally).
Most explosions were so flat and bad I could do better myself after 3/4 hours of learning(I'm a complete newb). Most """3d""" debris was not even shaded most of the time and looked like mere sketches. Special effects looked worst than last episodes of Dragonball.
It was bad. Definitely not eye candy, not even once.
=== SOUND: 1 ===
Voice acting was generic at most at really bad at worst and what little sparks of goodness were there - they were butchered after editing. Seiyuus did a "meh" job with almost no emotion - save for the yelling MC.
MUSIC! Not much to say here, I can't even recall any music that was there. It just //was there//.
Most battle sound effects were as good as the graphical part... CRAP. Doppler effect is nonexistent to these guys, sound is flat. No 3d sounds, no earcandy no nothing. Just how in the hell can you give anything more than 3 out of pity is beyond me.
=== CHARACTER: 1 ===
Man, this is too easy - characters are... flat. Their motives, backstory, depth - not there. Screen time is also null. I could tell something about each of them BUT! I can't write anything about something that's not there - they seem to be flat cardboard box devices put there because the MC has to talk to someone. MC was made dumb and an underachiever to not look like a Mary Sue character but he's just that in the end.
They are all flat, boring and most of them don't matter at all.
=== ENJOYMENT: 1 ===
I like action anime with swords, conflicts, demons, supernaturals etc but... I was literally yawning for the most of the anime. The amount of fails on the technical side was too big to handle. Characters were boring, pacing was bad. This could've been SO. MUCH. MORE. Just knowing this killed it for me.
=== OVERALL: 1 ===
This is one of the worst things I've watched so far. No redeeming qualities, no good characters, no good art, no enjoyment, no good scenes. Everything is generic at best, most of the time it's just crap.
Watching this is a waste of time, go watch Steins;Gate or something ;_;

Man, this anime was a let-down. This could be so good but it's so... bad. Let me explain why.
Animation was meh. It did not blow me off my seat, it did not make me cry in disbelief at how badly you can mess up. Motion was captured just fine, but the last 2 episodes suffered from the Dragonball Syndrome. Namely - dots for eyes and lines for mouths in combat scenes etc.
Writing 2/10(for effort): This was a pitiful attempt, at most. No backstory explained. I'm trying to keep this spoiler free, so I won't point out the most obvious stuff, I'll just say the story
...
tried so hard to find focus that it ended up all over the place. Detour after detour, failure after failure until you realize that this story is just a random blob of flashbacks, "mastermind" plans, motivations, trying to explain how soulpower works and excuses to throw in more fighting in-between your fighting and fan service. Not to mention efforts to make this battle royale with the story progress at times. This story would put any swiss cheese in shame.
Characters 2/10(for effort): Bland, cliché and boring when explained(main cast) but most of them aren't even touched, they are just decorations to make you feel this is actually happening in a school, with classmates and all. Length of this anime and its heavy focus on action left no time for character development - which is almost nonexistent, and if it's there it's always circled around the "development of their soul"(or how powerful they've become, and even that is inconsistent AND even that focuses on the main cast of like 5 characters). The only character that wasn't like the rest was Imari, and she was mercilessly shoved aside by the creators only to be brought up halfway through the series. And don't even get me started on the MC, a person this stupid and clueless in real life would be deemed as borderline autistic. Not to mention he looks exactly like the MC of Sakurasou(hairstyle, eye color and posture), but I'd like to think that's an accident. It has to be, since the characters are your generic huge boobs/small boobs and hairstyles thrown together to cover up the fact that they all lack any depth.
Sound 5/10: That was bad studio work - voicing was ok, but the way it was edited to somewhat fit into this whole thing... sound effects from battles sounded like they were taken straight from first mortal kombat at times(certain loud thump in 11th or 12th episode or sword clashing sounds when stuff hits a shield...)
SUMMARY: If you enjoy anime battles and do not like complicated lore, this is an anime for you. However - if you are on a crusade to point out mishaps and mistakes or you just can't help being pissed off at incompetency - you'd be better off without this stroke you'll be getting from watching this.
