These two shows are based on novels writen by the same author, and leaving aside the really obvious similarities and inside references (Yashiro, love for the space aesthetic), they have actually quite a lot in common, specially in the feeling they both give off. Tezuka productions took a very similar approach to Shaft in the way they portray the sense of tone that both of these novels have. Both shows have the same introspective inkling to them, and use fairly similar approaches to convey feelings of solitude, tranquility and contemplation. They are both pretty escapist shows, mostly in that they deal with pretty dorky character, some of whom will often get so lost in their own heads to the point they feel almost ethereal.
