AIR is well-known for being heartbreaking, but beautiful. And that's exactly what it is.
The story follows a girl named Misuzu who decides her summer vacation is going to be special. She's going to make friends, and it's going to be awesome! It doesn't sound very interesting...but there's a whole lot more to Misuzu's goal. We learn about her classmates, a traveller named Yukito, Misuzu's auntie Haruko, and a tragic story of the past. It's all very unique and heart wrenching...I cried all the time when watching AIR, and if you using up boxes of tissues, you will love AIR's story.
Like Clannad and Kanon 2006,
...
AIR's art and animation is gorgeous. The character designs are nice, the colours are vivid and pleasing to the eye, and everything is so nicely drawn. There's a lot of skies and wind blowing...and it's all beautiful. The only problem I had is the supersuper shininess of the eyes and hair, and sometimes the eyes were a bit strange...but it's not a big deal since this shows up in a lot of other anime.
Both the music and voice acting of AIR are phenomenal. AIR is really emotional...and the sound delivers all the emotion perfectly. Listening to the last few moments of AIR can make me cry, even if I'm not watching the video and I don't even understand Japanese.
I really, really like the characters in AIR. Misuzu is so sweet and innocent, I love her so much that I feel my stomach drop a little thinking when I think of what she's been through. Haruko and Yukito are so lovable, I want the three of them to be together forever. The side characters though...they're just "okay" for me. They're actually a bit boring...they had good stories, but they were just the "calm Ojou" and "genki girl" type. I liked them, but I didn't love them.
I gave a 10 for enjoyment, even though I hated this anime for making me cry so much. But I loved that it made me hate it. Personally, I love tragic stories. I spent hours glued to my screen with tears in my eyes and tissues on hand, but I couldn't stop watching. I started to care for Misuzu and Haruko's happiness that you would've though they were real. AIR is a fantastic anime, and you should really watch it. There's a reason why when you ask for a sad anime, pretty much everyone says "AIR."

Oh, my god. I love Ah, My Goddess. (excuse the lame joke.)
The magical girlfriend story nowadays is horrible, but I can see that they all probably were at least inspired a little by Ah, My Goddess. I think it's really cute and funny, and the whole time I'm cheering for Keiichi to get together with Belldandy. It's fun and cute, I love it. And the more dramatic parts are very, very awesome as well.
The art is quite nice. I adore the wings and the goddess' outfits, both are very intricate and pulled off nicely. Pretty much everything looks good. It's not "WOW that
...
was amazing!" or anything, but it's far from bad.
I actually really love the sound. Some pieces are cheery and regular anime tune, nice but not ear-catching. Then there's the gorgeous pieces with flute, piano, or violin. It's pretty and soft, something that might help me sleep. It's very goddess-like.
I think the characters are super awesome. Belldandy is so kind and perfect that you want be annoyed by her and think she's a Mary-Sue...but she isn't annoying at all. I love her, I want to hug her, she's great. Skuld is the one who can be a little annoying...but she's just so funny and cute that I want to hug her too! Urd is funny too, and she makes me smile. Keiichi is a little boring, and there are a million other "boring, semi-loser" types of guys like him...but he is a nice guy and does interact well with the other characters.
I had fun watching this, it cheered me up on boring afternoons. It's a classic anime that you must, must, must watch.

It's hard for me to describe this anime in any other word that "beautiful."
The story is heartbreakingly realistic-I think if this scenario happened in real life with the same types of people as these characters, the outcome would be no different. When I read about 5 cm per Second I thought it sounded boring...it doesn't stand out like "giant robots, world destruction, save the world" or anything, but that's what makes it brilliant. It showcases that ordinary life isn't boring at all...it might seem unsatisfying to some people, but if 5 cm per Second wasn't as bittersweet as real life, it wouldn't quite be as
...
magical.
Art is maybe the best part of 5 cm. It doesn't fail to deliver the same standard of beauty as Makoto Shinkai's other works. The colours, shading, and animation are all perfect and fit the mood. There's quite a bit of detail as well, also adding to the realistic mood of the story.
With all my gushing about the story and art, you'd think the sound was forgettable-especially when watching with subtitles. However, the sound actually did capture my attention. Each song sounds like it was composed with the emotion and care of anyone who has been through the same things as the characters. It's mostly sweet piano melodies that makes my heart either ache or feel nice and fuzzy. I would gladly listen to the soundtrack all day. The voice acting is pretty good too-the actors aren't really big-names as far as I know so I'm able to think "Oh, that's a nice voice." instead of "Oh my gosh it's Ayaka Onoue!"
I liked these characters. They weren't spectacular, but that's why they were good. They were written to be regular people, not some really cute moeblobs that make you want to buy $100 worth of merchandise. They reacted realistically to the situation, which I liked. So they aren't the most memorable characters, but they were well-written and humanly.
I enjoyed this anime a lot. Even though I'm not able to personally relate with their problems, I still felt like I knew how the characters felt. I remember watching 5 cm Per Second while talking to this person who is now my ex...it just adds a bucketload of nostalgia when I'm watching it. And I think nostalgia sort of is the whole theme of this anime anyways. So...I'm just trying to say that I want to give this anime a big huge hug like I'm 50 years old and meeting my kindergarten best friend again for the first time in 45 years.
