If you are looking for a story that WON'T get you:

1) Sobbing your eyes out
2) Grabbing your heart from anxiety
3) Hugging yourself in fear
4) Tearing at your hair in frustration
5) or a masterpiece upon which you've never laid eyes on before or after

...then "Free!" might be what you're looking for. It is no way a bad series, but it is a mellow, slice of life. There isn't blood or life-or-death scenarios, so it takes a certain type of viewer to appreciate the plot of repairing friendships and the characters.

... It WILL GET YOU:

1) Lots of shirtless bishounen (pretty boys)
2) Swimming
3) Warm fuzzy feelings

PLUS, the MUSIC IS PRETTY GREAT.

RECOMMEND to those who are or were swimmers who would appreciate the sport aspect of this anime, those with tender hearts who don't need an action-packed anime that has them gripping the edges of their seats, and BL fans who like to really kick the male-male relationships up to the next level ---this series makes it easy.

This masterpiece truly deserves more recognition.

The collection of one-shots are delicately told and truly tugs at your heartstrings. While there is sex, and it is enjoyable ---you are reading a yaoi after all, the manga takes a step back from the physical relationships between the characters to focus on the progression of the story line and the deepening and developing emotions of the characters. Readers will love the characters and sincerely wish them happiness from the bottom of their hearts.

To be honest, I cried for one of the characters; THAT was how attached I got to one of them. I was so happy with ... the endings of the stories. My heart is warm after reading this manga.
