I'm going to talk about the overall story and a bit of SPOILER for a few chapters, mainly chapter 1 so if you don't want any spoilers for chapter 1 or the story, please just go have a read yourself right now.
I personally feel like that this manga is really underrated. Usually, the build-up in these romance stories takes a while for the MC to confess their feelings to the other party. And usually, it's this build-up that makes it interesting for me personally to follow along with that journey.
This manga does things kinda differently. And I was surprised how well it works, and
...
how much I personally enjoy it.
Story (u can just read chapter 1 and it's the same as reading much of what I have described):
Ryo is a freeter university graduate working at a second hand resell store. Anyway, he is in love with his co-worker Yuzuki, a widowed single mother looking after her 5 yr old son, Asahi, by herself. So straight up, Ryo confesses his love for Yuzuki, in chapter one, this is what I would like to call a MASSIVE LEGEND MOVE.
But he is then instantly rejected. And it’s through this simple confession that I think sets up the entire plot of the manga and background for both the characters quite well. After Yuzuki polity declines Ryo’s confession, he persisted and stated that if their age gap is the reason for her rejection, he didn’t mind. However, he ended by saying “and even your child, it matters not to me”. It’s here Yuzuki pops the question “can a freeter like you possibly feed a family?...”.
This confession not only sets up both the characters; where Ryo can be seen as an immature child himself and doesn’t know and understand the responsibilities of having a child.
Yuzuki on the other is a strong and independent mother who puts her son, as her main concern. Ryo’s statement of “even your child, it matters not to me”, showed Yuzuki that he actually understands nothing and is still immature.
At the same time, the main plot of the story has now been setup. It’s quite obvious that the story will now follow Ryo, and he will have to learn and grow into not only a proper man but also a father figure. And that I think this is the journey that the manga will take you on. Where more traditionally, it’s the build-up to the confession that generates the stories and characters, but here, the confession itself kickstarts everything.
What I personally really like about this manga is the unique setting and characters that are presented. For starters, its not set in high school, meaning its not your typical lovey-dovey school romance. I was constantly drawn into how Ryo will become a man, and how Yuzuki will become more reliant on Ryo.
Overall I really enjoyed this manga, the only thing I can REALLY complain about is perhaps the character designs may seem a bit 'basic'. Also, sadly, the English translation is a bit behind other translations.
