My Deer Friend Nokotan is an absurdist comedy about a high school girl, who is also a deer. It takes many of the tropes of school anime (club drama, student council politics, and the sports festival) and turns them into Dadaist slapstick. The deer girl Nokotan's D&D alignment is chaotic-stupid, a hilarious foil to our try-hard straight-man student council president main character.
Is it a dumb comedy anime? Yes. But dumb is not a bad thing where comedy is concerned. And this dumb show made one of the most highbrow visual references of the year, recreating postmodern sculptor Bruce Nauman's 1989 piece Animal Pyramid. Sit
