This anime centers around the concepts of self-discovery and the accumulation of experiences and human emotions. If you are looking for a good show that offers a refined melodramatic plot with beautiful visuals, this is the gem that I highly recommend. (This is as complete and as spoiler-free as I can go)
+ this show has a unique and clever way of delivering drama and emotions to the viewers. It does it through letters. The feeling of manually crafting and receiving letters is magical. This is somehow diluted today because everyone wants it done and sent quickly.
+ each individual sub-story is a gem and each
...
contributes to the character development of the main protagonist. Violet’s interactions with each client helped her slowly mature by her learning to express the emotions that she has never expressed before through her clients’ first hand stories.
+ the show knows where it should focus on. Even though Violet was not always there for 100% of the time, it all builds up to her development.
+ the general plot has a nice build-up and it climaxed and ended beautifully. At the end of the day, we are all rooting for Violet and her future endeavors.
+ the dialogue is rich in content and poetically written. The words used were carefully chosen especially during the narratives when the letters are read. Each word on the letters conveys a magnitude of emotions.
+ the output of the voice acting is also fitting. The dialogue is given life through the voices and the emotions that were attached with each word. I personally love the rather quiet and clear voice of Violet. Her voice actor did a good job portraying her.
+ the visuals are very well drawn and the backgrounds and landscapes are pleasant and calming to look at. Details such as the creases on Violet’s ribbon tie, the lights and shadows on Violet’s emerald brooch, and the different flowers that are seen on numerous frames are very well-detailed and adds to the overall elegance of the scene. The color palette of the frames perfectly complements the emotions/aura of the scenes.
+ beautiful character design that is refined to the last detail.
+ the animation is crisp and flawless. This is probably the most well-animated drama anime I’ve ever watched.
+ I also like the play and meaning behind Violet’s name
+ the music is emotionally stirring which complements the scenes.
+ The OP and ED did not fail to meet the high expectations. These songs are subtle but they personally give me an attachment to the show.
+ overall, this anime offers a lot of emotions and they translated it beautifully to the viewer.
- it started quite slow and perhaps roughly because it started with the viewer not connecting with Violet’s sentimentality with Gilbert.
- I still find it strange when an episode ended with someone recognizing Violet as the soldier of death and saying she should not be an auto memories doll.
- I think it may jump a lot of times from present to past.
- I still do not understand the importance of her 'Evergarden' last name. She is basically more like a Violet Bougainvillea than an Evergarden... (tho Violet Evergarden sounds catchier)
Wrapping this up, what I personally got from Violet Evergarden and what resonates with me are that:
1. Letting go of people we love is never easy;
2. Learning what love means and healing after letting go is part of the process in finding our own selves; and
3. Remembering to live life to the fullest and keeping on moving forward, as well as cherishing the moments we have with the people we love are what will give us a positive and healthy outlook in life.
