LIGHT SPOILERS
I initially thought this book would be a villain story, hence the name, “Berserk of Gluttony”. It wasn’t but while I was surprised on that, I can say that after I have read all the released volumes (3) I can say that this is amazing. I'm making this because I feel like it is tremendously underrated. SHOULD YOU READ? YES, 100% This is great for those not looking for a harem, just an action, fantasy adventure with a dash of love. It is somewhat similar to Arifureta, but minus the harem.
The premise may seem "unoriginal". An underestimated or unproved mc of low status who
...
has a power that grants him greater power in a world where those with high status abuse their power. It also includes a level system, a separate land of monsters, and adventurers who kill monsters to make money.
What makes this unique is how the characters and story revolve around all of this “unoriginal” starting info. This contains a minor revenge arc which is always satisfying to a romance sub-plot that isn’t just some side thing. You can feel the longing of the characters for each other. How the characters approach the change in how the high class mistreats the low class is great and unique as well.
I have heard and tried some basic stories of adventure, but this takes that and makes it 10 times better. The rare art pieces that appear in the light novel are amazing, you can truly see and experience the image the author is trying to project. The author also manages to carry you along in this story.
I may be subject to bias because I love op main characters. However, this mc is overpowered yet nothing compared to the big fish he will face in the future. He is also not an annoying pervert who is insanely dense. He makes the right decisions and does everything rationally. I'm not saying he is one of those cold and calculating mc’s, because he isn’t. He is somebody reliable due to his tough past and is capable of showing emotion.
What adds to this story is the double-edged sword in the story. His power is insane yet uncontrollable at times. He can attack even his closest friends in this state. It is hinted very early on in the book that he will have to die or go insane at some point. Yet the mc still tries to protect others when he can’t protect himself. He tries to protect others in not some wimpy or delusional way, but in a way, the reader understands his sheer devotion to his comrades, and why he’s changing the entire world by protecting that person.
The mc is perfect, shows mercy to most, but shows validated ruthlessness in his revenge arc. The mc does all of his actions perfectly, but something easy to forget is that he has constant pain or hunger, which makes his actions all the more insane.
I also love how the history of the world isn’t hard to grasp, almost all of it is shared in the first volume but not in some boring history lesson way.
This does contain romance, and the romance is more involved in SOME moments, and it has an impact at the end of volume 3. Most of the story goes on without it.
The third volume is the one where I feel there were some issues, but I think with how the story is set up so far, the rest of the volumes will certainly be amazing. Also, MINOR SPOILER, Berserk of Gluttony isn’t even his adventurer name as of Volume 3, it’s Corpse which is all the cooler.
