tokyo mew mew is actually a rather enjoyable series, as it carries many redeeming points, and has a lot of sweet simplicity to it. however, there are also a lot of issues, given that despite the enormous potential it presents, most is not expanded upon or properly recognised throughout the course of the series. the main factor for this seems to be the protagonist is given so much of the spotlight, many other characters are often cast to the side. unfortunately, despite how much i did enjoy the anime, that is the case in many areas. that being said, there are really quite a few
...
rather interesting plot twists amid the many cliche magical girl tropes presented.
tokyo mew mew is also particularly appealing and different because you can greatly empathise with the series antagonists, and you're often lead to ponder who's really the evil side in this story. there's also a fair amount of attention brought to earth's problems in regards to climate change, pollution, and of course, endangered animals. like most magical girl series, there's a particular fixation on certain elements. similar to how sailor moon is with planets, or shugo chara is with cards and eggs, tokyo mew mew has a continuing theme of animals and berries/sweets.
in tokyo, japan, momomiya ichigo attends an endangered species exhibit with her crush, aoyama masaya. after an earthquake, ichigo and four other girls are cloaked in a wondrous light. while immersed, a cat appears before ichigo, and then seems to go into--- or rather fuse with her. the following day, she unwillingly exhibits cat-like tendencies, from an odd fish craving to landing on her feet from an incredibly high fall. sooner or later, after a not-so-chance meeting with shirogane ryô and akasaka keiichirô, ichigo learns she's one of five chosen to respectively infuse with the dna of an endangered animal, and that hers is that of the iriomote cat. ryô and keiichirô explain that this allows her to transform into mew ichigo, a cat girl birthed to fight in the name of justice. from then on, she is ordered to defeat chimera animas— alien parasites which infect animals and turn them into monsters. however, she's also instructed to find her teammates, who're the four other girls from the exhibit— aka, the remaining mew mews.
the first mew mew ichigo encounters is aizawa mint, a seemingly stereotypical pampered rich girl and ballerina, who's been plagued with the genes of the blue lorikeet; midorikawa lettuce, a timid, kindhearted, and brainy girl who endures relentless bullying and merges with the genes of the finless porpoise; an energetic youth named fong pudding who absorbs the genes of the golden lion tamarin; and fujiwara zakuro, a well-known professional model, infused with the genes of the gray wolf. unfortunately, just finding these four ( as difficult as that is ) is only part of it, for she must also get them to understand the severity of the situation at hand, and persuade them to join her in the fight to keep earth safe.
eventually, the mew mews become considerably prominent in japan, though civilians are more or less clueless to the details regarding the ongoing brawls between the mew mews battle against the chimera animas and their alien controllers, kisshu, pai and taruto. the three of them serve a being addressed as " deep blue-sama ", and it is revealed that the aliens are in fact the original inhabitants of planet earth. they left long ago and were forced to live in an inhospitable environment, where the rest of the aliens are still struggling to survive. as such, they're back to reclaim earth, and are enraged at the state in which the humans have rendered it. despite their mission, kisshu develops romantic feelings for ichigo, and desires to claim her as his possession.
the mew mews base of operations is " cafe mew mew "; a cover-up establishment made to guise the teams true purpose. there they give mew mews work as waitresses for ryô and keiichirô. as the battles ensue, secrets are exposed, lessons are learned, and additional unexpected romances begin to develop and flourish. ichigo yearns for her previous life in which she could devote her efforts into capturing the heart of her crush. now, often to her dismay, she must establish new priorities, all the while keeping her life as a mew mew separate from her life at school and at home.

tonari no kaibutsu-kun ( my little monster ) follows the relationship between two high school students, who are seemingly opposites, and the chance encounters they are faced with as they gradually embrace the reality of the world surrounding them.
mizutani shizuku, has little to no interest in anything beyond her small world of studying, and her ultimate plans for future success. socialising with and befriending her peers had long since been abandoned as a priority. as such, she's commonly seen as a cold and uncaring girl. all the while, yoshida haru, who sits but a mere desk away from her in class, is frequently absent, and
...
is notorious for getting into fights with anyone and everyone. after being coerced to deliver class printouts to haru's home, she finally meets him, who is awfully quick to greet her as a friend. it is then discovered that the alleged neanderthal haru, actually harbours a remarkably sweet heart; and notwithstanding his reputation, is incredibly anxious to attend school regularly alongside of valued friends, like your average teenage boy. for reasons beyond her initial understanding, she's compelled to inch out of her previously small world, in hopes of granting him means to gain the student life he desires. haru quickly declares what he presumes to be feelings of love for shizuku, but due to both of their inexperience with student relations, be it romantic or platonic, takes it upon herself to have him make friends first, to ensure he fully understands his own feelings. so begins the cold and callous girls embrace, by the tenderhearted boy a seat away.
the other characters introduced are nothing short of exemplary. the assembled cast is able to offer a wide variety of lessons in both romance and friendship as they all struggle to come to terms with how they really feel, and what's truly important to them as an individual. their is undeniable development undergone, however things can sometimes progress at a seemingly slow pace in that regard. the series is incredibly humorous, while not failing to overlook more serious themes over a greater span ( most of which are only featured in the manga, since the anime only covers a really small portion of the story ). it's definitely worth watching, but to get the full experience, i suggest looking into the manga afterwards, in order to see how things actually develop and conclude. that being said, the anime features beautiful animation and soundtracks befitting to the series.

ore no imouto ga konnani kawaii wake ga nai, otherwise known as oreimo, is a rather interesting take on a seemingly mundane brother / sister relationship. in comparison to other anime's focusing on such relations, oreimo features a refreshing and intriguing interpretation on things, as it follows 17 year old kyousuke, and the endeavours he faces in wholehearted attempts to ease the trials and tribulations of his 14 year old sister, kirino.
kirino is blessed with beauty, academic success, and notable athletic abilities. thus, letting her be seen as an idolised overachiever, and seemingly " perfect ". all the while, kyousuke lives life with an easygoing
...
attitude; not particularly excelling in anything, and just blending in. for reasons initially unbeknown, the two are on particularly bad terms. they don't interact unnecessarily, and when they do, an altercation of sorts is likely to come forth. as such, the two live their lives without involvement of the other. well, that is until the day the aforementioned " perfect " girl, mistakenly allows her magical girl dvd case, to be discovered by her brother. to make matters worse, the contents inside were actually that of an eroge, depicting and romanticising lecherous acts betwixt siblings.
notwithstanding their previously strained relationship, this unorthodox discovery grants the two means to build a new foundation. being the accepting type that he is, kyousuke assured kirino he would not judge for her secret hobby of being an otaku. as such she finds a confidant in him, and while the two still ultimately fail to see eye-to-eye, kyousuke unconditionally helps kirino resolve the troubles she's bound to face as she willingly enters an otaku world, while keeping her unblemished record in the eyes of both her parents and peers.
the animation is consistently superb and the featured soundtracks are all topnotch. the characters all have far more depth to them than you're initially lead on to believe. there's noticeable development in the characters respectively as well as with the bonds they share. things will generally follow the brothers point of view, and before long he'll find himself in a harem-like situation. a few romances appear to be on the cusp of flourishing as some unique predicaments are undergone. while it's not riddled with cliche ecchi mishaps, some do appear here and there. there's a surprising amount of despondent intensity thrown in amidst the lighthearted comedic value the episodes have to offer.
all in all, while some redundant themes may come to your attention, it's worth watching.
