This is not the epitome of original writing. It uses every trope of rom-com. You can count them of as they occur (often before they occur, there are very few surprises). The main characters are simply walking cliches. There is a BIG REVEAL in episode 6. This is subtly foreshadowed (I am using subtle in the sense "hit over the head with a large brick")
Spoilers start now (If you are the sort of person who considers it a spoiler to learn that Ryuuji and Taiga are the alpha couple). The BIG REVEAL is
...
that Teresa Wagner is not in fact Wagner, but the crown princess of the fictional European country, Larsenberg. Can you say Roman Holiday, I knew you could. What is more is that she is "gasp" engaged to be married to one Charles de Loire (a nice guy, everyone is nice). This leads to the original plot device of Teresa becoming conflicted between her feelings for Mitsuyoshi and her sense of responsibility to he country and running away. Mitsuyoshi adds a couple of original bits himself, he cannot bring himself to talk about his feelings so he decides to chase after Teresa with the intention of finally giving vent. And, after a couple of false starts, he does.
So why, you may reasonably ask, do I rate this as good and "Mixed Feelings". Because, in spite of everything, I enjoyed this. It is pablum, but good pablum. It does not strive to be more than it is. Also there is some interest provided by the secondary characters. There is an actual real question about the beta couple (conflicting tropes) and one episode is narrated by the cat. If you are a sucker for a romance give this a try (it does not take long to tell exactly what you are getting into).
