Wild Life

"Wild Life" and "Doubutsu no Oishasan" are both incredibly enthralling works that tackle veterinary medicine (a rather obscure theme in manga). Immersive stories that has discernibly been heavily researched by its authors. While Doubutsu no Oishasan is about a veterinary student who has to handle snow pileups, temperamental animals and eccentric professors; here we see a rookie veterinarian wrestle with a wild environment.... and even wilder patients.

GENIUSES. That would be the first word to come to mind when describing these mangas' protagonists. Subaru Miyamoto was literally born for ballet, and Kai Ichinose, for piano. A heavy atmosphere surrounds these two, given the realism portrayed therein, that neither detracts from nor dulls the riveting and engaging storylines. They share a myriad of similarities which you, yourself, would find out, should you ever find yourself flipping the pages of either Piano no Mori or Dance! Subaru. In these stories, the two leads would experience a dramatic turn of events which would later prove monumental to their growths as artists and more. Laden with hopes and aspirations, the main characters would then venture out into a greater stage, each with dreams and ideals of their own.

Glass no Kamen

The one thing that will always amaze readers about both series is their ability to draw anyone in, no matter the gender...or age. Both takes on the same theme: acting. Whether theatrical or televised acting, Skip Beat! and Glass no Kamen (Glass Mask) tackles the said art. They are top-billed by overactive girls whose talent in that department so far outshines even veterans that leaves both friends and rivals alike gaping in their wake. Talented they may be, but the two female leads lack the sensitivity to notice that they may actually be far more amazing actresses than they made themselves believe. This recommendation is not made on the premise of the two works' similarities, but rather on giving the readers an alternative to the manga that left them wanting another creation with the same topic of discourse. They differ, however, in tone, Glass Mask is wrapped in a darker atmosphere despite Skip Beat having a female lead with a "dark" side. Accompany these quirky girls as they take to the stage of their dreams!

In war stricken countries, our protagonists find hope and salvation even as tragedy continues to hound their every step. Both leads are strategists and throughout their combats, each demonstrates intelligence beyond their years which would win them several battles and saving numerous lives in the process. But while they may seem invincible, they too are human. They may appear knowledgeable but they often display naivete towards the ways of the world. Both Shoukoku no Altair and Song of the Long March are beautifully drawn, making the reading experience even more worthwhile. For those who came here for its war themes expecting (lots of) blood, be warned that the gore in both is downplayed. But don't let that stop you from adding another awesome work in your list!

One may wonder as to how two tales cut from different cloths can be so similar...And yet they are. These two are both beautifully drawn, laboriously at that. If you're one who's easily taken in by detail-oriented awesome artworks, then this one's for you. The two leads, in their journey to find their destiny, discover themselves instead. These tales don't simply show the protagonists doing 'things' but they also draw you in with their struggles, frustrations and successes. Blood, sword fights and revenge. Vagabond may not be an outright revenge story and yet it is, albeit in a very different form.
