I usually don't watch anime like this but I have played Otomes and I too feel a little tug of yearning for the popular Isekai trope. The title caught my eye and I decided to give this a watch.
There's no way around it: This is an absolutely shameless wish-fulfillment fantasy. If you make peace with that you can enjoy this anime, I think, but if you cringe at the little part in you that wants to be the most beloved person around, this anime will be torture. I did make my peace but was squirming uncomfortably towards the end anyway.
If you are a self-aware nerdy
...
girl or so, and have played otome games, and occasionally enjoy some fantasies of being the center of everyone's affections while being a genuinely good person, this anime might be a guilty pleasure for you. It's not good or deep by any means but it is enjoyable.
I immediately liked the premise of the main character being the intended Villianess of the story. That's unusual and I like the detail that Katarina indeed has all the visual cues of being "the bad guy". That said, there is a lot of missed opportunity here. Katarina becomes lovable so quickly that she faces virtually no challenges living her new life. Arguably avoiding her doom flags is the challenge but due to being impossibly likeable, she honestly solves this problem well before it's relevant. There's one attempt at a plot twist but the resolution is so predictable that I'm not sure why they even bothered.
In her previous life, Katarina was a self-proclaimed otaku but seems somewhat unusual for the role: she doesn't seem to be an outcast but rather an extremely peppy, cute girl ( with the only imperfection being an adorably messy hair ). Not that otakus can't be like this but somehow in an Isekai trope I'd at least like to see a stark contrast between the old and the new "character". Also not to be the one to call for realism in an Isekai anime but c'mon, if she likes sweets as much as she does, couldn't she at least have been a little overweight?
The thing is though, they really were good at making Katarina likeable, to the audience as well. She's not a technically great character but enjoyable and funny, and definitely the saving grace of the anime. All the other characters are shallow carbon copies of characters you have seen a million times before. Well, to a degree this is understandable since the whole point of the show is that it's based on an Otome. In a way I think it helps if you can get the meta humor, though I think they missed many opportunities in this as well.
The artwork is nothing to write home about, which is a shame. There are sakuga moments that look very pretty but the average animation is fairly dull. Surprisingly gorgeous environmental art every now and again. There's a weird contrast between the female and male characters. The latter are extremely boring and unoriginal in design and art but the female characters are vibrant and interesting to look at. It's a little bit funny really since it kinda drives home the idea that the male characters really are just kitsch to have around where as the more substantial relationships are between the female characters. Not sure if this is intended meta humor.
Sounds and music isn't even worth mentioning. It's there.
While I would criticize the story of being a missed opportunity in many ways and being very predictable and wish-fulfilly, I'd say there's two things here that I would hope are thought provoking for some people: First is how Katarina accepts everyone, partly because she knows exactly how they would end up if certain things would come to pass but also just because of her temperament. Second is how she is oblivious to her problem having been solved because she is so focused on the problem she thinks she has.
Entertainment though this may be, these two things stood out to me as good bits of wisdom for people to chew on.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this anime.
I went in hoping for a scary, a bit gorey story, fearing a cheesy disappointment and I got honestly one of the most impressive ( spooky ) stories I've seen in an anime. My only gripe is that oh, it should have been longer!
The story really impressed me for the genre. It was clever, fresh and the telling of it was done really well. Very unpredictable too, which I lift my hat for since people tend to lean towards predictable scary stories. The atmospheres changed fluidly from ( slightly tense ) ease to thrilling
...
and unnerving.
The artwork was beautiful and as an owner of ball-jointed dolls I really loved the detail of them as they appeared through out the series. I also loved the subtle creepiness of them, even considering their eventual role. Usually dolls are a pretty cheap gimmick to make a creepy atmosphere but they balanced their beauty very well. If one were so inclined you could speculate on their symbolism in the anime.
Also, the gore. There isn't a lot of it, but the gore there is is rather impressive. I like. Very nice attention to detail considering that it is a (non-movie) anime. Hooray for blood that doesn't look like ketchup ( Elfen Lied... ). This sort of thing rarely makes me go 'eugh' audibly but the first gore scene most definitely did.
Sounds... weren't particularly memorable. The OP was kind of interesting but not really something I cared to listen to. Not bad, but not incredibly good either.
Characters were alright, if a bit unbelievable at times ( honestly, they were quite relaxed most of the time considering their situation ).
At first I really didn't like the cover girl Mizaki Mei but once SPOILERS, I had to admit she suit her role and felt sympathetic for her.
The male protagonist Kouichi was somewhat uninspired, minus SPOILERS towards the end which left some questions in the air ( more in manga? ). However it didn't really take away from the series.
Overall I really enjoyed this show and I HOPE dearly that it gains enough popularity to inspire more proper horror anime.

Entirely too cutesy wutesy woo. Entirely too predictable. Entirely too annoying. Just what age-group had that been directed to?
When I started watching, I immediately thought that the overly cute and constant chibi-scenes were more awkward than funny. It was like the story was grabbing me from the neck and yelling "it's chibis and they are being cute and funny. NOW LAUGH!". Honestly,
In 12 episodes, there were entirely too many characters and trying to deal with them all just made the anime confusing. Specially when the story-telling jumped back and forth from cutesy wutesy woo chibis to seriousness like... every few minutes. Like the
...
review I read about the series before watching it "once you think the chibis are just a bit too much, it changes into more serious story-telling, and when the angst is starting to become overwhelming, it goes back into the humour-mode" ( or so ). That is really hard to pull off without being annoying. Fruits Basket managed this marvelously, Sukisyo didn't. It was just restless and hard to follow. Not to mention that more than once I was stunned by the sheer stupidity of the characters ( someone might call them plotholes... ). In the end, I felt like whole of that second personality stuff was pretty pointless, among many other things. They hardly supported or had anything to with the main plot.
It did jerk some laughter out of me ( but sometimes it wasn't because of the humor ) but most of the time I felt like banging my head to desk.
The style of the animation... ugh... not only was it overly cute, it was pretty generic, anime gone overly-cute. Almost all the most important characters had weird colored hair and eyes while the background characters were almost always that basic brown-haired and brown-eyed types. I really hate it when for no apparent reason characters have cute blue or pink or what not eyes or hair, specially if they totally stand out from the rest of the group yet no one minds.
Animation itself was basic good. Nothing too incredible but not bad either. At least all the eps looked pretty much the same ( at least I didn't notice any big difference anywhere ).
Sora was fun, but his constant chibi-transformations made him a bit annoying. Also, his stupidity from time to time was nothing out of annoying, rather than cute ( and make no mistake, I often like dumb characters ). His alter-ego Yoru, seemed much more interesting.
Sunao was cute. If you like that kind of cute. I don't. His light-red hair accompanied with such basic "difficult uke" behavior was irritating, and his reasons of angsting and eventually putting up most of the story was ridiculous. I can't find such childishness believable, let alone likable.
I was mostly interested in Nanami's and Shinichirou's relationship in the end. Mostly because I like their voice actors alot, which is probaply pretty shallow but that's really all there was to it.
I liked Matsuri a lot, because... can anyone say Ayame ( Fruits Basket )? Sure you can. He was totally, absolutely like Ayame. Then again, that's also why I didn't like him as much as I could have - originality is nice.
While I'm a complete shounen-ai/yaoi fan, I did find the lack of girls a bit silly. I don't think in whole 12 eps there was a single female character around, not even in the background. It was a total Homotopia and while I sometimes amuse myself with such thoughts, it's really kinda unrealistic. That Valentine's Day ep was a sad... sad thing to see.
Anyway, this was definitely a very disappointing anime and I really can't recommend it for anyone.

I didn't know anything about Air Master, nor did I know that it had any sort of reputation. It was just one anime among the many but I got interested in it just because one artist I've been stalking has made nice ( yaoi ) fanart out of it.
So I sought Air Master out and watched it, without having any idea on what I was going to see.
I was surprised to find that the main characters were females and not only that, the yuri/lesbian implications were quite evident ( to the point where they weren't even implications anymore ). I didn't mind at
...
all. And BIG big bonus: the females were NOT annoying, generic, overly cheerful, bug-eyed, cutsey wutesy woo twerps with glittery hair and two out-of-proportion sticks for legs. The characters were exaggerated, but realistic somehow. It was nice and refreshing.
The story itself does leave alot to hope for. It's often the same problem with all anime series: it's friggin' confusing or plain. I immediately got the feeling that once again the makers of the anime trust that the person who sees the anime has read the manga.
In Air Master, it was plain and a bit stupid... plus it the series ended like in the middle of everything. I didn't feel like anything was concluded. So story-wise, it was a bit of a disappointment.
What saves it was the quality of each individual episode. It wasn't a funny anime per se but it was amusing, and impressive. Don't get me wrong: I do NOT like fighting animes generally. I find them utterly boring. But Air Master was beautiful, plus I do find some charm in the Street Fighting romantique ( can you say that? ). Besides Maki herself is really likable character, as Air Master and as Maki, her fighting style is cool.
I understand if someone would diss this anime because of the lacking story, but I'd say one should still give it a chance ( and maybe if one likes it, she could see about the manga? ).
However, if you're the type that likes cute girls doing cute things or high-school boys who sprout wings every now and then, I don't think this anime is for you.
If you're a bit perverted ( to every way ) and find amusement from dirty jokes, yet enjoy a bit of coolness every now and then, Air Master should be well worth a view.

The first few episodes of the anime were alright, at least they were a bit funny without too much forced humor ( "WE HAD THIS COOL CHARACTER PULL A FUNNY FACE NOW YOU MUST LAUGH LIKE THE BRAINLESS OTAKU YOU ARE" ). However, Ciel ( the angsty runt in the picture ) should start to get on viewer's nerves from the get-go. The brooding pedobear-bait character has been done entirely too many times.
After I got past the introduction episodes and got to some more deeper story, I honestly just couldn't help feeling that this is nothing else but fanservice to angsty teenagers and Gothic Lolita
...
types.
I'm sure it sells to those people but it's not very deep nor interesting. The characters are extremely shallow and cliched. It's selling point is the admittedly beautiful artwork but that's just about it.
If pointless shota-tease and clichéd spiritualism with gothic atmosphere is your thing, I'm sure you'll give this anime 10/10. However if you actually want some point or story to an anime, this probably isn't your cup of tea.

It's an old old anime, "classic", and the feeling is like that as well. The reason I was hesitant about bothering with it was because the characters are more than a little bit androgynic and I usually don't like that, plus it came off as this really glittery and over-beautiful, romantic anime-cliché story ( save the fact it was about a boy and a boy, rather than a boy and a girl ). Well, the funny thing is that it kinda was all of those things I said but it was wonderful. Reminded me that anime doesn't always need to be comedic to entertain me.
...
As soon as I started watching, I was almost immediately entranced by the skillful and detailed animation and drawings ( remember that this is old anime ). Classical music playing on the background suited the feeling really well. Usually, when I watch something alone, I constantly mumble out some remarks about what's happening ( ie. with Weiss Kreuz, every five minutes, I said "angst" ), but this kept my mouth pretty well shut, even while some stuff did strike me a bit lame. The story moves on quickly but at the same time, kinda slowly... erm... hard to explain. The story "stopped" at just the right moments to create a feeling and then moved forward just the right time so that it didn't become boring. Like the parts where the main character is playing a piano... it was very wonderful to watch and I really raise my cap to the animators for actually making it look like the character was playing that song he was playing and not moving his fingers around the keys randomly.
Sure, I could find plenty of things to pick on about the anime but the general feeling in it was so good that little stuff like that is kinda unimportant.
Only bigger thing that bothered me - which is also the reason I would rather talk about this as an animated poem rather than a story - was the fact that the ending was unclear and sudden. I would've liked some kind of epilogue. What happened to Gilbert? It left me perplexed but still the general feeling is good. Of course, this is based on a manga ( which, I believe was based on a novel ) and I supposed the anime kinda relies on the thought that those who see it, have read the manga.
Rather than reading the manga, I'd love to get my hands on the original novel.

A young boy is selected to a special all-boy Academy for those with extra ordinary talents in different fields. Perfect setting for something where you don't have to worry about anything else but relationships and getting less then A in classes.
Completely unbelievable honey-filled boy-love story where everything is too good and perfect. Some people like it, some people don't.
The artwork is basic good. It doesn't make you gasp for breath or anything like that, but it's pleasant to the eye.
The sound is nothing too amazing. Music was... there... but nothing out of the ordinary and the soundtrack won't stick to your head for a
...
very long time.
Voice acting was good as usual. I like Miki Shinichirou tho I think he has done better. The constant usage of "honey" from his character ( Naruse ) was somehow clumsy from time to time.
The plot is boring at best. No twists or unpredictability. Everything that happens is hand-fed to you and you really don't need to think while watching. Nothing exciting, just some hastily knitted story to give excuse to cute boy-love scenes.
It was like porn without... well... porn, or "cute boys doing cute things".
The characters were dull stereotypes, providing the viewer with easily understandable archetypes from which you can just pick the ones you like for the duration of the series. None of them had hardly any depth and even if they did, the anime was too short to get into detail.
The main character, Ito Keita was mostly annoying while cute. Obviously he was meant to be a "likable" character and as such, all the other characters basically fell in love with him immediately. This is what made him annoying.
Also, the series lacked the classic evil character ( unless you count the vice chairman ). The twins and the doctor were a little "bad" but not exactly evil.
I'll re-watch this only if I'm feeling the urge to look at a show that requires no brain-activity from my part, that will have a lot of pretty boys being cute with each other.
I would rent this, but I wouldn't buy it.

This is what I would call fairy tale ( or fairy tales ) for adults. For me the anime was a long-needed proof that you don't need to have insanely elaborate story-line with shallow relationships and bizarre characters to make an awesome anime.
I would certainly recommend this for anyone who likes a little bit artistic and peaceful story. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who thinks that it takes huge explosions and people screaming their special ninja-karate-magic attacks at people.
Most important thing to say, which occurs to me after looking at the specific review fields below:
this anime doesn't have anything that could be any different
...
from what it is. I felt that all the contributing factors make up into a very good package of entertainment.
I found the animation rather beautiful, however, not as beautiful as I would've hoped.
In some of the episodes I wish they would've stuck to normal animation instead of using painfully obvious 3D animations and effects. However, they didn't take away too much of the enjoyment.
Other then that it's visually very soft and pleasant to look at. Some people might yearn after big and watery eyes but I never felt so. The characters and the atmosphere blend nearly perfectly together and neither take away attention from the other.
Like with the animation, I felt the music sat very well together with the whole thing. It wasn't something people would rush to download I think, but it served it's very important purpose on making the whole anime nice and peaceful to watch.
In the anime at least there actually doesn't seem to be any grand plot. It's merely a series of tales of a man dealing with mushis in various ways. One may think that this is a bad thing but personally, I thought it was nice. The makers of the anime knew what they were doing and didn't try to insert anything more complex then what was necessary.
As for the stories per episode, I thought they were quite fun. It was interesting how they explained some myths and such with mushis. I also liked the explanations on what mushis were and why they did what they did.
The stories in each episode were simple and very likable. They may have been a little philosophical but not in a way that's painfully obvious nor were those philosophies ever delivered by showing the ( usually ) main character on close-up saying something would-be deep. It was left for the viewer to realize in the way they wanted, if they wanted.
There is only really two characters in the series that show up more then once. However, the people that showed up in the stories were pleasant enough with a lot of variation when it came to personality. On looks they may have all looked a bit too similar, however I didn't see this as that bad of a thing: rather have the believable looking characters that don't stand out much then have vividly designed characters that take away the attention from the story.
The character that stood out most but still fitted very nicely with the atmosphere was obviously the main, Ginko. He is cool but not brooding ( for a change ) and does have a little story of his own that explains his history. However, the anime does not make a huge fuss about it.
The other character that stands out only because he has a monocle is Ginko's... I want to say "friend"... who seems to collect things related to mushis ( something also addressed ), however save for two episodes he doesn't really do anything groundbreaking. Well, that goes for the whole anime.
As a whole, the anime doesn't really focus on any character any more then is necessary for the story. It does not try to sell itself on characters that are really sexy, intriguing and such. Which somehow for me at least seemed to result in much more interesting characters then.
I have already watched the series twice and no doubt I will watch it completely again. Goes very well together with a rainy summer day and a cup or two of tea.
It's not that the anime is so incredible, it's just that it's nice and relaxing like your favorite fairy tale.

I don't care much for tennis, nor any sports for that matter. Never liked sports, sports games, sports shows, sports movies ( well, some movies ), sports fashion... none. I don't care if some sport is considered particularly lame compared to another.
Sports are - in my opinion - incredibly boring.
But I've watched the whole thing and enjoyed every second.
There's a lot of tennis. With very few exceptions, there's no episode that wouldn't have at least one short match of tennis in it. Of course, it isn't just any tennis, it's anime-tennis, which has been made exaggerated and humanly impossible.
I understand quite well
...
if someone dislikes that and I find it a bit bothersome too from time to time but I guess I've learned to overcome it. Those who think that it's completely okay to make 13-year old boys jump 10 feet up the air in anime, think of it this way in this case: PoT is in our world. It's not in some weird Ninja Country or some Alternative Dimension that resembles ours. It's not even in the Far Future nor Long Long Time Ago. It is not fantasy per se. So it's a bit 50/50 situation; on the other hand, it's just an anime and it's okay to exaggerate but on the other hand, sometimes people should think when it's ok to exaggerate and how much. I think in PoT, they have over-done it a bit, but it's nothing you couldn't overcome with a bit of quirky sense of humor ( try to imagine real life players shouting out the names of their special-serves and whatnot like that, it IS hilarious ).
Also, I don't know how the Japanese normally talk about tennis but with my limited understanding of it, I noticed that the matches are usually talked about as "battles" and the players are "warriors" ( this doesn't show in the fansubs )... which is a bit... ehh... lame. Then again, Japanese are a weird and passionate bunch in my books anyway so I wouldn't be surprised if they really *did* talk about sports with words like that.
So, the tennis in PoT, got the name of Ninja-Tennis from me. That's also the reason to why the matches aren't THAT boring in PoT, even while they are a bit predictable and repetitive. Heck, I have grunted "drat" after Seigaku does bad in some match ( or the hell with Seigaku; if the characters I like do bad, I cuss ).
So what of the story? Apparently, it's just about how the main character's team Seigaku makes it's way to the National Tennis Tournament. However, 170+ episodes fit alot of other stuff as well. Personally, I don't mind the little side stories. I don't mind at all to see an ep with almost no tennis at all. Actually, I wish there was more eps like that because I'm very interested in many of the characters, and the characters are so much fun. They are what keeps me watching.
Also, while this is certainly not an *obvious* shounen-ai anime, it's certainly veeery slashable.
Thar be Fanservice.
Well, even if you aren't into shounen-ai, there's nothing stopping you from watching. Everything for now has just been little jokes and I doubt it would get any different ( otherwise the anime wouldn't be so popular, sad but true ).
The animation and style is... well. Okay. I can't really say much about it because it hasn't really struck me as really good or really bad. It's general good, the look doesn't change in every other episode and it's easy to follow. Maybe it could have been a bit "cleaner" somehow, but it might be that I'm just fooled because of the quality of the fansubs. I was slightly amused by the fact that the animators have often taken care to draw a lot of detail in the shoes of the characters, heh.
This is the first time I've paid so much attention to the sounds of the anime, not counting in voice-work. I will have to say I'm surprised: they used REALLY old sound effects. A lot of the SFX are familiar to me from an old anime called Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin ( Silver Fang ). According to this page, it's from the year 1986. And dude, you can hear the quality. Well... I kinda like it on the other hand that PoT constantly reminds me of Ginga ( I've loved that anime since I was a kid... I've watched it countless of times, that's why I recognize the sounds ) but I really think they could've used a *bit* newer SFX.
The music of the anime is nothing great either. I'm reminded of some sports games my bro used to play on Amiga 500. Also, beware if you hate that kind of music: it's repetitive.
Aheh... but I do have to admit that I've so far watched the ending song only once. Opening I haven't watched... ever. They just didn't strike me so I've skipped them. At some point, they sounded ok but I was eager to see more of the anime.
Voice-work then again is really good. The voices fit the characters really well and none of them sound too awkward.
The characters. Absolutely wonderful. First of all, there's gazillion of them. Secondly, they are all unique. Of course, there are only few main characters but of course there's a lot of characters that pop up in the matches through out the anime. Though I must say I'm really having hard time remembering all their names ( then again, my name-memory is really bad anyway ). I'm actually a bit jealous to the person who drew the manga ( I haven't read it ) because with tennis, he got to make up so many characters without having them clogging up the story. Only two things bother me with the general setting of the characters:
1st: quite many of the teams Seigaku has to play against, are full of a-holes. It's a bit unbelievable, because it gives the impression that if they are Seigaku's opponents, they must be evil... which is just stupid. Plus the fact that it's not like few members of the team are a-holes; the whole team is. Thankfully there are few exceptions, and they bring more fun characters around too.
2nd: the characters are SUPPOSED to be like... 12-16 years old or something... right? Excluding the Freshmen, almost all of them look more like 16-20 years old, if not older. I'm 21 and I'm having a bad conscience because I coo over anime-kids.
Well, some individual characters then...
I wish SO bad that the main character, Ryoma was better. Because... he is a horrible character. Well, first of all he is an annoying person I can't really like much at all and secondly he is just a bad, bad character. He is TOO good at everything, tennis, English, ping pong, friggin' bowling. He is so good at all of that stuff it's just not funny or entertaining. It's boring and annoying. He has some mild weaknesses, mostly concerning tennis but other than that he is nearly perfect all the time. Know of the name Mary Sue ( or the male-version of it, Gary Stu )? I'd almost dare to claim Ryoma is a Perfect!Stu. I mostly wanna smack him all the time. Also, he says "mada mada dane" ( "not quite yet" ) waaaaay too often, even when I don't really see how it fits the dialogue.
Horio, the freshman with 2 years of tennis experience. Well........ it's pretty obvious that he is meant to be incredibly annoying character. And they damn well succeeded.
Tomo(?) and Sakuno(?), those two little girls. Why are they there? What is their purpose ( except be annoying and provide the obligatory anime-chicks even while they are just kids )? So far I really really don't see any point what so ever to the existence of those two. Both of them are just annoying, Sakuno being unable to friggin' say a word to Ryoma because omg, she is SOOOO in love with him. It's not cute, it's frustrating. Someone in the reviews here called Tomo a rodent. Rodent is almost right. I prefer vermin ( because rodents are cute ).
But yeah, if you don't like the first ep and think the anime is doomed because of the characters that were introduced in that ep, do watch more. There's a lot of characters to be showed yet and I'm pretty surprised if you don't find some you like.
Since I watched AnimeOtaku fansubs, I might as well say a word about them, though it's not gonna be nice. First of all, I really REALLY hate it when fansubbers don't translate everything but sometimes sub some words or phrases untranslated ( in PoT, it's often "mada mada dane" ). I've seen worse than this ( ie. in some Furuba-subs ) but it's still annoying. Get over it, translate it ( even if a bit inaccurately ) or just forget it but don't friggin' write Japanese into the subs. I know that ie. word like "desu" is pretty impossible to translate because it really doesn't mean anything but if you can't figure something out, just drop the word. No anime-fan is going to die because of that ( besides if it's a big anime-fan, she can probably pick up that "desu" from the speech ). That one guy said "dane" at the end of every sentence. You can't help but pick it up. But subbers could've translated that "right" or something.
The way the color-border of the subs changes when the speaking character is in or out of the picture is pretty useless. For a good while I was wondering why the text changes color and then I realized what it was. Yet not once had I been confused about who's talking.
The encoding could've been better from here and there. Some of the eps are of pretty bad quality, though honestly I'm not the type who has to have everything in HD.
