I deserve a medal for finishing episode 3. This anime is horrendous! The animation is jank and lazy, the characters are less than cookie cutter, the magic is based on the needs of whoever thought this thing up, the battles are frustrating to watch because everyone is idiotic. Don't even get me started with the cartoon villains.
There is NOTHING to look forward to here, even the music is forgettable. I have a pretty high tolerance for isekai, so me giving this a 1 should be all you need to know.
The biggest problem is not that it's generic, the biggest problem is that it
...
demands emotions from you, with the weird ass cartoon villains and supposedly tense fights, but the only reason why the fights are "tense" is because everyone involved is incompetent or a cartoon. Who wants to watch a fight between a cartoon and an incompetent when the media is taking itself seriously?
Just garbage, it's not even fun garbage.

This anime was so boring I didn't realize that I was watching it for the 2nd time.
This literally happened, I was having flashbacks at around episode 6 and I was wondering why, then I realized I've already watched this.
Is the book better? I won't say that this anime doesn't have the strength that the novels had, but some parts were skipped even though they were interesting. The lackluster animation doesn't help the show either and the style somewhat ends up looking comical when they try to discuss serious matters. This specific weakness doesn't really matter much when reading, but it's different when everyone
...
looks like a cartoon character and conducting politics.
It's fine, as far as the genre goes it's refreshing enough to be worth a try.

There is NOTHING like this.
While the studio butchered the animation on the first season, they did this season GOOD! I must admit that my score IS biased but my review is NOT. So please allow me to tell you why there is nothing like this show and if it's for you.
Why there is nothing like this show? I also have no clue, BUT, what is this show in the first place? Not the synopsis, not the FAQs or setting, but what makes it unique. The answer is, TACTICS.
I have never seen an anime that even comes close to how this title showcases tactics. You
...
see, everything is laid out, which means there is no over the top power and there are no out of nowhere mc'guffin. Everything is out which means everyone is on a very level playing field so when it's a gigantic free for all, we see how people having access to the same equipment utilize them differently and creatively to one up their opponents. And the scenes and wins are genuinely amazing and earned because we fully understand what is happening!
So far, this is the closest to a PvP anime that I've ever come across. Most teams are competent enough to give the MC team a run for their money and so are most enemies so you are always at the edge of your seat.
If this was NOT my bias, I'd still score it 8.5/10. It's really good and there really is nothing like this at the moment to the detriment of anime in general.
So if you like tactics, NOT just thinking MC but a thinking cast that reasons out offense, defense and counters, you will LOVE this show.

There's generic harem OP MC Isekai, then there's the trash tier dumpster fire hella' entertaining OP MC Isekai; this one belongs to the latter.
I won't sugarcoat anything, this is just a notch above generic isekai. There's no character growth here or deep and complex character motivation. World building is at stupid levels, and there's no complexity in this story BUT, you know what else is lacking in this story that makes all the difference? The EXCUSES.
This story is unapologetic in its garbageness, there is no leap of logic to make sense of why the MC is OP, there is no justification, there is no
...
moralizing or any of the sort. This story is dumb af and it doesn't give a shit what the general public thinks. It wants to tell a story and it does so.
If you like the OP MC isekai niche and you just want to pass the time then there's a good amount of enjoyment here. If you're looking for anything deeper, then touching this will probably give you cancer.

This score already takes into account that this is a modern day isekai, for good or for bad. There is enjoyment here marred with the weird loli-isms and corny takes on either jokes or action. Again, there is genuine fun here, a decent amount of the jokes land but even from someone who enjoyed the light novels and enjoy modern isekai, there's just too much mediocrity with the fun.
If you really like modern isekai, you might enjoy this more than others, so if it's available to you then sure -- go ahead and watch! If you have other titles in your list and you're not
...
that much into isekai anyway, then I suggest you get your enjoyment somewhere else.

Why this series is GREAT but those who score it LOW are also CORRECT?
New comers will read reviews and find themselves confused on the division. Is this anime great? Is this anime great but with caveats such as "only degenerates can like it"? What is the actual score here, what is happening?
Well here's what's happening, most people who say that this anime is great is actually coming from the Light Novels or Web Novels. I'm one of those people and let me paint the whole picture for you.
Rudy is flawed, the dude is a normal teenager who failed at life so miserably that his only
...
redeeming action was saving someone before dying at the age of 30 when earlier he was masturbating and couldn't be bothered to dress up and go to his parents' funeral.
So let's start with that, the MC is morally lacking (among other things). Does acknowledging that mean that he should be excused for the bad things that he did and do? NOPE! BUT, does that also mean we should stop everything because the MC is NOT good? Well, no, that wouldn't be fair not because of Rudy but because character development is part of every good story.
Thing is, while Rudy does change, he also backslides. This is why so many people LOVE this series, because Rudy's life was such a journey and the way his character arc closed in the web novel hit so many people simply because he "encompassed" a good isekai journey, that journey of self-improvement, that journey of second chance and that journey of finding yourself. Rudy never becomes a truly moral person, and even though I loved his journey, I never loved Rudy, I even hate him at times. But we can all appreciate a redemption story, and this is what Mushuko Tensei is.
And that is why people vehemently defend this title, because his journey makes a LOT of the bad things worth it because these things were never really defended as "good" in the first place, rather, part of a journey of a flawed human being that eventually finds himself and to remove these bad things DOES take away from the self-fulfillment he eventually achieves.
BUT, those things belong in the future. So the people who think a LOT of shady things are going on in this show are ALSO CORRECT. They are part of Rudy's demons. Some of them gets addressed eventually as Rudy overcoming these issues and he becomes a better human, some of them gets addressed in ways that aren't satisfactory and we look at Rudy as that dude we know who tried but failed. And some of them doesn't get addressed as an issue at all and even to me, as a fan, finds that inappropriate. But this is not MY story, it is unashamedly Rudy's, flaws and all.
So I suggest you try this show but instead of seeing the bad things as being "just part of it", the bad things are part of him, which makes sense since he is a 30 year old loser who died accomplishing nothing and even being an absolute bother to everyone around him. But does he stay a 30 year old loser? Well turns out, that can't be answered in a few episodes similar to how someone can't change in just a few days. (In his case, a few decades)

Stockholm syndrome the anime.
Girl gets isekai'd upon dying from her own cooking, finds herself in a body much like her own in ancient China, proceeds to be kidnapped then just starts cooking (you know, after she died from her own cooking, let's just brush that away)
This anime should be above average, while I'm certainly not the target audience for the tropes I can still accept that this should be above average. . . but the girl got kidnapped and was practically making token resistance towards her captors. Since this is romance, I bet she ends up with one of them too.
Again, story beats are
...
not for me, but I hate the fact that this girl didn't fight, poison everyone in the camp, they're practically bandits and they allowed her to handle the food. In the first place she already managed to kill herself. Kill everyone you weak minded MC!

Some animes are just so perfectly for you that you have no choice but to give it a 10.
Subjectivity aside, this anime is so self-aware and unapologetic in what it is that it chooses to focus on the entertaining stuff rather than bog you down with exposition and awkward dialogue to get isekai hero from point a to b. To try and fool you that the hero is overcoming difficulties so you can insert your self in their shoes. While there's nothing wrong with power fantasies themselves, it just happens that most isekai power fantasies are poorly executed. With authors that are trying so
...
hard to make the MC look cool or something, it's a waste and it's generic.
But this one doesn't have that, it knows what it is and excels in telling this specific story in this specific atmosphere.
It's an enjoyable experience and as far as isekai goes, it really is a 10. Overall though, I'd say it's a 7 (5 for me is barely NOT mediocre so 7s tend to be enjoyable)

This might sound trite, but I suggest you just read the Light Novel and IF you don't want to read the light novel, I suggest you get the ebook instead and read it through TTS or text to speech and listen to it.
I won't say that the light novel is better, it's that this anime is different. The atmosphere is different, the portrayal of the characters are different, and it's like it took a decent slice-of-life, isekai light novel and poured "anime-ism" to it and made it generic.
Look at this, first episode and this guy wakes up and just spouts exposition. We could've just seen
...
him quiet, doing his daily stuff. Being welcomed to the wonders of this new world. BUT NO, we get exposition after exposition after exposition of a guy who CAN'T speak much. Instead of us seeing the solitude of this guy, both in its content silence and loneliness, we don't.
Besides that, everyone is either smiling or blushing, it just takes you out of the experience since you KNOW that people don't act like this. This is a chill novel, not a campy one, so why all these changes? And that's the thing, why all these changes if it's going to make the anime worse than the source material.
I repeat, this is NOT a source VS adaptation thing, this is a source VS lazy adaptation thing.

When watching Anime, you do not say to yourself "Maybe this will be trash" rather you say "maybe this will be my kind of trash". That being said, this is pretty much almost trash. The one caveat is that if you are very new to shounen and aren't tired of all the tropes and can tolerate this show's lazy writing then I suppose it's alright.
It's for kids to young people (15 and below) the trope of consequences not being solid enough (kid destroys a ranch and sets off a rampage of cows) and his punishment is cleaning the wall of their residence. Even if
...
the other sorcerer was the one to take the brunt of the blame, the tone of it just screams "for kids". How they keep smiling in between shots like idiots, or posing in between dire situations, I particularly remember the cows falling on top of each other in neat rows. This show is not meant to be taken seriously but then the protagonist goes serious and says "I want to protect everyone", how am I supposed to take that seriously if the show by its tone is NOT meant to be taken seriously. In just comes off as "Naruto-ish" but I think this is a fair statement.
Naruto doesn NOT have monopoly on "I want to protect everyone" but the thing is, when Naruto said it, you believed him. When this dude says it, I'm just bored. Everyone laughs like an idiot, no sense of urgency, then suddenly we're supposed to take this kid seriously? Yeah, no, doesn't work like that.
So if this is your kind of trash, I think that's great and I'm excited because you are most likely new(ish) to anime and you have a lot to look forward to, to most people tho, this won't be your kind of trash.
TL;DR
The show doesn't take itself seriously at all, but wants us to take the protagonist seriously. So in the end, it's boring and you won't care.
