Tokyo Ghoul is most certainly one of my favourite manga of all time. It is a masterpiece, and deserves its recognition.
Story - 10
When the first started reading, I thought I knew where this was going. But nope! Tokyo Ghoul reinvents some typical cliches and turns them into an amazing, beautiful story. It does it all so well, and everything is so well put together.
Characters - 9.5
Now, the reason this rating is so high is largely because of the main character, Ken Kaneki. He has some of the best character development in all of the manga. Going from wanting to go back to being a human
...
to accepting fate and his life as a ghoul was an amazing change to be reading. The side characters are amazing. They all have such depth, and some with so much complexity that it always feels fresh to read any scene with them.
Artstyle - 9
The artstyle for Tokyo Ghoul is definitely something you've got to get used to. But when you do sort of settle into it, it's amazing. The way Sui Ishida makes some of these panels is so unique and it makes every panel feel special. You can see Sui put a lot of effort into the art, and it's amazing to look at.
Dialogue/Message - 10 (SPOILERS!!)
Some of the dialogue in this manga has had me staring at a wall for a few minutes. Easily the best dialogues are during Kaneki's torture, between him and 'Rize'. Kaneki reflecting on everything while a figment of his imagination is pushing him over the edge was probably some of the best chapters of Tokyo Ghoul.
Kaneki is such an amazing representation of taking fate as it comes, even if it takes time. This becomes especially apart after Kaneki's torture. Him coming to terms with his fate to live as a ghoul was an amazing thing to read.
Overall - 9.8-10
If there is one thing to take away from this review, it's that Tokyo Ghoul is one of the best manga ever made. It's simply amazing what Sui Ishida has managed to do. For some, this series brings out the edge lord in us. For others, this series lets them reflect on themselves. But to all, this is a beautiful story about change, fate and life. Can't wait to read Tokyo Ghoul: re!
