If I wasn’t watching this while it is airing, I probably would have dropped it. There is a trend lately to make only fan service content with no deepness no plot. Just superficial action with great animation and generic plot. This is ok if you want just some to pass time watching. That’s it. Hopefully proves me wrong.

Production is great btw, its just the story that is pitifully superficial. Best thing that could have passed for meaningful sh*t was the real meaning behind turbo granny manifestation. That was as close as we can get to a decent deep detail.

Never read the manga. Never read anything by Junji Ito. So I did not know what to expect from this adaptation. Or more concretely. I was open to anything. Anything other than this. This did not work. At least not in the way I was expecting it to work. And it has nothing to do with the animation. Even if it did have a noticeable drop in quality of animation after the first episode, animation was the best thing to take from this adaptation. Absurdism in horror genre is spicy, one to be careful to mingle with. Maybe it is the cultural differences that creates ... gaps in enjoying oriental absurd horror. Have read that the main reason this did not work was that it was rushed and not correctly adapted with the manga pace. Nonetheless to me it did not work because it did not have a plot, no purpose. Just absurd things happening. I quite like those stories that never get resolved and leave for the viewer/reader to fill with their imagination, but this was not the case. It just was superficial. And the ending? Was there a plot twist? We did get a laughable explanation as to what was the cause of this and that but as to why and how, nothing. Now this to me is extremely important and is what the whole plots strive to. That you cannot leave it to the viewer’s interpretation and imagination. Because what the hell are you trying to build into for what?
It was watchable and I was curious and half hoping for it to get better. 4.5 out of 10 for the animation and production value even if they are also to blame as for the changing of directors and filling it all out in just four episodes with running time twenty minutes each. As I mentioned earlier the best thing was the black and white adaptation which was intriguing and want to see more of this. Such a shame because I was so looking forward for this.This will not stop my interest in Junji Ito’s works but I will approach them with scepticism to my tastes. Although to my experience, I have yet to find a pure supernatural horror anime or manga that is creative, unique and non-stereotypical that it does work for my tastes as a long time horror fan. Knowing japanese culture it should not be hard right?
In seven years watching anime and reading mangas, this was my first review. Hope any of you out there find it helpful.
