Helck
add

BHA is a series that has taken a mass of shounen tropes and concepts, polished them to a sheer shine and implemented them into a unique world, creating a narrative that is both nostalgic and unique in its own right. With that in mind, Helck takes very similar tropes and refines them in a similiar way, but to a very different effect. Where BHA uses its tropes to develop a wide range of characters and themes, Helck focuses on a smaller group of characters and themes and uses its tropes more as a means of creating drama, comedy, and world building. If you enjoy BHA because of its surprisingly refined writing and character development you are sure to love Helck.

Psycho-Pass
add

The Big O was memorable for its narrative depth and exploration of human values and morals, and while it did break away from this with its occasional robot smash up moments, this was what made the show as good as it was. Psycho pass takes the narrative elements that The Big O occasionally dables in and refines, focuses, and directs it more clearly and gives a lot of insight and thought into the complex issues of free will, human nature, and the value of law and freedom. If you enjoyed how the Big O would take a moment to make you think, you'll love how Pyscho Pass gives you a season to make you question everything you've ever known.

91 Days
add

Death Note's most pervasive and most well acclaimed element is the mental chess game that is battled between L and Light (kira). This dynamic is both complex and intense, with a pressure exuded between the cast that could choke the air out of you in anticipation. 91 Days has similar elements of mental chess, but unlike Death Note, which features monologues that allow us to enter the character's mental state, this show removes the monologue, making the thoughts of the cast unknown to us. To supplement this the show has an excellent sense of visual story telling and uses context clues, character interactions, and visual ques to allow us to feel the same intense pressure and tension without giving away the character's plans, making this less like a game of chess and more of a game stratego.

JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 3: Stardust Crusaders
add

While these are two distinctly different kinds of action series, they both are staples of the genre. Hunter x Hunter is a hallmark of shounen by its efforts to take influenes from every corner of the genre and polish them to a sheer shine in its own format. So, if you enjyoed stardust crusaders or jojo in general you will like hunter x hunter...if no other reason (granted there are TONS OF REASONS WHY WOULD LOVE THIS SHOW, ITS JUST REALLY GOOD) then because they have what can only be described demon magician Dio with the sadism turned up to the most extreme.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Where re: zero subvereted the isekai genre through horror and mystery, No Game No Life subverts it through solid writing, great characters, and some actually great action set pieces that are both visually marvelous and narratively appealing. If you are a fan of Re: Zero because of its characterization and subversion of the genre than you'll likely enjoy this as well.

One Outs
add

Easily the second best gambling anime, Kanji: Ultimate Survivor being the first, One Outs functions as a great alternate approach to the subgenre using a sport as a backdrop for truly intense gambling and action that just keep you on the edge. While not quite as excellent as Kaiji, it is still really truly great.

Ajin
add

Ajin expresses questions on the assumed nature of humanity through violence and gore. It is both a spectacle piece and a contemplative existential conversation that forces you to rethink a lot of things you may have over looked. In this way, Berserk is a perfect match. It is far more violent and filled with gore, but it asks important question about morality, the value of life, and what it truly means to be human...all while brandishing a blade that would make Cloud Strife jealous.
