Tokyo Ghoul:re is a sequel to the infamous Tokyo Ghoul manga, as obvious as this sounds. This manga has been getting a lot of hate for it’s difficulty and difference from the first manga, since so many new characters get introduced as well with a completely new perspective on the world of Tokyo Ghoul. It’s true that remembering everyone that has been introduced in the first few volumes is quite confusing, but trust me, remembering every new character and knowing who they are and what they do just enhances the experience so much more than you’d ever think it would.

starts off with a new perspective, mainly focusing on the CCG and a new breed of controlled Ghouls called the Quinx. The story slowly and slowly switches back over to the original perspective on the Ghouls but honestly the new perspective on the CCG is a refreshing aspect that I really adored, even more so than the previous Ghoul world.
It’s story is written in a very realistic way, in my opinion. It starts off pretty on quite a joyful note and slowly seeps into darker tones and as you go further into the story, if you retrospect to the first few chapters, it really is depressing. The plot twists weren’t anything special, probably because I skimmed over it, but some of them were unexpected like ------
Honestly the characters in this manga is what I love the most, they’re just so fun to read an so unique and interesting, I enjoyed every single character in this manga, especially Juuzou, even if he didn’t get as much “screen-time” as i would’ve liked. The text is fun to read, it’s a great experience to voice each individual in your head and they all have amazing character designs.
Now the art and panel composition is a bit different than the prequel, it’s a lot more confusing and some of the art isn’t too clear on what they are until you really look at it, which is to say, you can’t read this fast. You’d have to really pay attention to this manga to really grasp the full understanding of the story, which is good in it’s own ways but sometimes you want to voice act the thing like it was an anime, and this manga doesn’t very well allow you to do this, but with enough practice of course it gets a lot easier, and more satisfying as well.
Otherwise the art is beautiful, some big panel shots are just marvelous and Ishida’s art is always welcomed as usual.
Since I’m an English reader, I didn’t get to experience the Japanese lettering and all that jazz (Which is apparently excellent and very clever). But I can tell you one thing, I haven’t seen one bad translation of TG:RE since the first chapter. The translation team did a wonderful job translating this, especially impressive considering most of what I read were fan translations. This manga is adored and I love everyone for putting so much effort into letting everyone else read this.
And all together I just think this manga was incredibly fun to read, I enjoyed a majority of the chapters and felt real emotions from this story. If you’re a Tokyo Ghoul fan (Which I assume you automatically thought about reading this), or have seen the :re anime, which is underwhelming to say the least, I highly recommend the manga instead. And with that, I’m off to read more manga I’ll enjoy to the fullest and review.
