so I just watched this at the cinema a few hours ago and well I don't hate it but also don't love it so much lol.
The positives first, the sceneries are really beautiful! The colours and music were really realls pretty. And the adventure aspect of the movie was also enjoyable like all of Suzume's encounters and how she got with each one a new change to her look was nice to see. (I actually think a game adaption would be cool haha like I can imagine walking around doing side quests at daytime and some action quick time events when the doors
...
need to be closed).
Ah and not to forget the "cat", quirky and sometimes a bit annoying but also charming. A cute side character who just wants to be loved.
Now starting with the things that didn't feel so fleshed out are kinda the main characters personality and character development. For example what was really her motivation to start this journey (guilt? curiosity? responsibility?) and how did she development those feelings for Souta.. like I get that she crushed on him at their first meeting but all their dialogue we get to see seems more platonic to me. So the development of Suzumes "I want to save this world" to "I am afraid of a world without Souta" to "I don't want to die yet" was a bit murky to me.
Wished also to hear her talk more about her relationship with her aunt, I only remember her talking a bit with the other high schooler she met. Actually it would be nice if Souta would ask her if her family doesn't worries about her and to see her then talk about her aunt.
About Souta, kinda the same it would be nice if we got to hear more about his thoughts and feelings (also regarding Suzume) through monologue or maybe those scenes where his soul seems to drift to the other world. Maybe that's why their love story seems a bit not it to me. Also I was surprised we didn't even get to see Souta talking with his friend for one scene haha like I thought they were best friends or so that he drove Suzume and her aunt all the way to the last door because Souta would be there. We didn't even get a reunion scene of them lol. (tbh I was hoping for a little romance between Souta's friend and Suzume's aunt hahah)
Anyway there are also some plot holes or rather said, open questions for example:
How did she got lost as child in the first place in Ever-After (like how could she go throughthe door)? What is the relation between Souta's grandfather and Sadaijin? And when the grandfather said to Suzume to just go home and forget everything, then what about the doors that needs to be closed or are there more closers? Also how could Suzume turn Daijin to a cat, like does she has powers or so?
But yea in all I enjoyed it but I expected more emotion kinda (not talking about the voice actors, they were great! More like it the writing didn't came over so much like it was intended) I did tear up a bit at the end when she talked about with her younger self but yea that's it.
