MF Cringe is the best way I can describe this show, and I'm not a fan of calling things cringe.
There is an opportunity to have a genuinely cool/interesting anime surrounding street cars/racing. All i know is that this is not it. This is far from it.
The art style, character design, and color palette feels old and outdated, and not in the good nostalgic way.
The plot, characters, and dialogue are so generic and paperthin, i actually find myself getting annoyed by how bad it is. Like every time a character talks, its either so cringe, clunky exposition dumping, and/or just bad writing. i genuinely cant
...
help but think "this series could actually be better if nobody talked." whenever someone says something.
The characters, their motivations, the dialogue are all so poorly written, i'm pretty sure chatgpt could have shit out something better. Its bad to the point where I need to publicly let people know this anime is actually terrible and to not watch it.
I wouldn't be surprised if this anime/manga solely existed to pretty much promote auto sales (Toyota in particular) in japan, and trying to market japanese auto manufacturers and cars (esp Toyota) to be just as 'cool' as lambos, ferraris, porche, etc.
Are japanese cars prevalent and prominent in street racing? Absolutely. But this show does not care about street car/racing culture at all. Show is nothing more than an advertising campaign for Toyota that belong in the 90s. And an uninspired and bad one too.
I genuinely don't know why i even watched all of season 1, and this much of season 2 because it was genuinely bad the whole time. The anime isn't "It's so bad, its sort of good" type of bad -- it's just straight up bad.
2/10 - there are a lot of bad animes out there you could watch over this if you're looking for bad animes. i watched this so that you dont have to.

Would just leave that as my review if allowed, but since I cant:
The intro song is absolutely goated. Creepy Nuts have outdone themselves with Otonoke.
The anime is up to par with how great the intro song is. Words can't and won't do the series any justice though. I got to see the first 6 episodes that previewed, and the show is weird, interesting, and fun in all the best ways.
Just give the series a try, if you're relying on reviews to decide whether or not you give a series
...
a try, that's sheep mentality. You can sacrifice 1 hour of your time to give 3 episodes a try. Honestly, giving 20 minutes for 1 episode a try is likely enough to convince you that it's worth your time. Even if you think the series is trash (it's not), adding one more show on your list to watch isn't going to kill you esp considering the endless stream of garbage that is being put out that you (likely) are consuming anyway.
9/10 - series is a whole lot of fun. worth your time. intro song is probably the most goated anime song i've ever heard too. i could nitpick on some things, but it's really not even worth it because in the end the minor flaws are irrelevant and wont take much away from the show.

I have no idea what the hell everyone is so conflicted about.
"Shikanoko this bit, shikanoko that bit, Shikanoko is a no go because it isnt funny, same joke over and over again" etc zzzz
Every week, I tune into this show for one singular reason, and that reason is enough, and it should be enough for you too.
That reason? The first ten seconds and the last 5 seconds of the intro song. Yes, that's it. Those first ten seconds = absolute fire, and you better believe im Shikanoko Nokonokoing catJAM once a week.
As for the actual show, I don't really know or dont
...
really care. I've had full episodes play here and there, but its usually something i have in the background while im just farting around doing something else.
Like I said, the first ten seconds of the intro song is enough for me, and it should be enough for you too. And if it isn't, then shikanoko off this dick.
The first ten seconds of the intro song (can't say i care for the "filler" part of the song that comes after it) = 11/10 certified banger
show? idk. all i know is im shikanoko nokonoko all up in this bitch for a few seconds a week. stop watching after the intro each week if you want. the intro song is what i came for, and it's what i stayed for. could i play the song on youtube? yes. but it just hits harder when the intro song comes in naturally. but as i said before, i dont care about, what i consider is the "filler", part of the song. so no im not going to play it on youtube. its not the same. and if you dont understand, then you just dont get it, man. and i feel sad at you.
TL;DR, Shikanoko nokonoko Koshitantan, bitch.

maybe im just an uncultured idiot that doesnt have good taste.
this show isnt bad, its not bad at all. maybe the source material has some big things in store for us, but so far, both seasons of the anime have been kind of mediocre for me.
episodes are usually an easy watch, but it has never been a series where i was like, "I need the next episode right now wtf"
this show is alright though, but i dont think characters, story, or anything about it really is anything that makes it a "stand out" show for me. i understand other people feel differently, and
...
I'm not here to tell anyone their opinion is wrong.
i just personally dont think the show, characters, plot is as interesting or compelling as others say. it feels generic still.
ill still watch this season because the lineup of shows this season is incredibly weak.
6/10 (rating it on the literally 10 scale, so above average.)
It's fine and an easy watch. Honestly leaning more towards a 7. Just a little conflicted because i feel like the score is a bit inflated. I tried to enjoy the show, genuinely tried, but cant help but always feel like this series always falls short in one way or another. I enjoy it enough to keep watching, maybe my opinioin as the series progresses, but its mostly a show i watch because there's nothing else to watch (the lineup of animes this season is particularly weak)

For anyone that's into motorsports like f1, you will enjoy this anime.
the show (at least the first season) is grounded in reality for the most part, and gives some insight on what goes on in the paddock in something like f4. while there is a bit of skepticism of whether or not its actually possible to have a competitive car that can compete in f4, maybe the cost is significantly lower in japan. you still need a significant amount of capital that is required to be able to compete even in f4 that tiny local sponsorships and hard work just cant cover. unless those sponsorships
...
are giving thousands or tens of thousands of dollars each.
but those details are ultimately irrelevant anyway in the end, and is just nitpicking at this point. the animation is done relatively well, and there's no ridiculous anime super technique that makes one driver better than another. the anime stays truthful to the main aspects of motorsports, especially most, if not all, of the driving aspects. it doesnt get too technical, but gives enough information for the casual viewer to understand and enjoy as well too.
this series was airing at the same time as mf ghost, which i thought was maybe one of the most cringe (sorry, i just dont know how else to describe mf ghost) animes that i have ever seen. i genuinely cannot comprehend how mf ghost is rated higher than overtake, and how overtake is rated so poorly. the show did a decent job, and im looking forward to what comes next.
i would give this series a 7.5/10, but since i cant, i guess 8/10? idk, truthfully, maybe closer to 7/10 than an 8/10, but we'll put it at 8 because i dont want to push this score any lower than it already is to mf ghost which imo is a 2 or 3.

Perfect anime for those trying to justify their alcoholism.
In all seriousness, the anime goes for a pleasant, chill vibe, and achieves it. Episodes are formulaic, and essentially is a toned down, more adult iteration of food wars.
Character makes drink, gives drink to another character(s), takes a sip, insert surprised, orgasmic reaction while exclaiming how the drink is so good! Then you will get a long winded exposition dump-- what ingredients were used and the methods used and some sort of backstory behind the drink or character making the drink.
Let's be real, no one watching this actually cares about the little details, and whether or not
...
they're even true. They probably all are true, but I don't think anyone would care if these factoids given to us were really just made up nonsense. No one is writing notes while watching, and is like, "I'm gonna remember this obscure detail for this even more obscure drink, store it away in the vault, and when the time is right, blow everyone's nips away."
I just enjoy the chill vibes and almost therapeutic relief the show provides its viewers. We can all insert ourselves into the shoes of one of these characters going through something bc who doesn't have their own struggles and hardships? so we just try to immerse ourselves in the episode, and let some bartender who has the wisdom of an ancient monk in his in his 30s(?) that can make god tier alcoholic beverages comfort us through the fake drinks he makes and through the ultimately pointless stories he provides us every episode.
The show provides a little bit of solace for those seeking it. I find myself enjoying it for what it is, and don't think people need to make it any more or any less than what it is to enjoy it. It's nothing ground breaking, but it's pleasant enough that it may find its way onto your weekly viewing schedule like it did mine.
6/10. It's fine.

*Insert movie trailer narrator*: Critics are calling this a "10/10", "A Masterpiece", "one of a kind", "a must-watch".
Is it though?
Important thing to note: Stay away from the machine translated subs. It will take longer for fan subs to be uploaded on places, but it's worth waiting for them. The MTL subs made my initial viewing and impression of the show far worse.
BTR left some big shoes to fill, and while this show falls short by essentially every metric in comparison, it still landed far better than i thought it would. Since both animes are focused on a group of girls making a band, it's difficult
...
not to compare the two upon viewing.
Once you accept the show's surface flaws and its use of CGI, you'll find the show and its characters to be, at times, far more charming and endearing than you had anticipated. The CGI either feels better with each watch or maybe I just got used to it. It definitely doesn't bother me at all anymore though.
I think this anime is a 6 or 7/10. Which may seem confusing or low of a score since I find myself enjoying it, but I know it's not going to be for everyone. And that's okay. I think for those that like this type anime and genre, they'll love it. I think for those that are indifferent or don't care of this genre of music, then it'll probably be a miss for them. Objectively speaking, I put the show just above average. I can see the show just simply not being everyone's cup of tea either. Not every show is either a 1 or 2 or a 9 or 10. Reviewers always lean towards one of the extremes when in reality, its almost always somewhere in between.
also, idk if im going through a quarter life crisis where I'm finding myself enjoying j-rock/pop when I'm normally a hip hop head. But for now, I'm okay with this new found appreciation. If you enjoy music themed animes, and this particularly genre, I think it can be a fun and enjoyable watch. I also can see it not being for everyone, and thats fine too.
This story has been written countless amount of times, in every iteration possible--chase your dreams bc that's how you'll find happiness. This is essentially what it boils down to, and something we've seen a million times. But even if it is generic or cliche, i dont mind this at all because i think people should pursue their dreams, even if the odds are stacked against you.
And despite the shows predictable and inevitable happy ending after a journey of going through their fair of struggles/hardships, i find myself being able to just turn my brain off and enjoy the show for what it is. Im less invested in the story and characters than most fans of the show, but I can tolerate a little build up, cliche/generic writing as long as they can deliver. And for the most part, they usually do. While I don't listen to any of the shows music outside of the episodes like I do with btr/kessoku band, the music is mixed and produced well by a team of competent producers and artists. The musical elements of the show are executed well, and thats where the show shines.
So, is this a masterpiece? No, far from it. (Sorry GBC stans, just my own honest take.)
GBC stans wont accept any opinions or thoughts less than that. Personally, I enjoyed the show, but the show is far from perfection in my eyes. I found it to be good, but not great. And i can see why the show might not be it for some people.
Is the writing a bit generic and story predictable? Yes. But I'm fine with that. Not really watching the show for anything groundbreaking.
But despite characters having their flaws, they may grow on you over time, and you may even find them to be surprisingly quite endearing at times.
Is it worth your time? It might be. I think it's worth giving a few episodes a try at least before knocking it.
I just turn my brain off and enjoy the show for what it is, and dont its necessary to try to make the show any more or any less than what it is.
All I know is that the show made its way onto my weekly watch schedule, and it may find its way onto yours too.
7/10.
Anything less than 10/10, GBC stans will find 'confusing', but its not confusing. Just watch and decide for yourself in the end.

That Time I Got Reincarnated at the snooze table.
For 6 straight episodes, it was just a bunch of people gathered around a table spouting off exposition or what their next plans are going to be with nothing actually happening.
There is so little animation done this season that I genuinely dont know if the quality is the same, better, or worse. I am not joking when I say it's mostly still frames that switch between characters (sometimes not even with mouths moving) as a character dumps exposition or is engaged in the dullest dialogue.
With so much talking thats been done the last 6 episodes, i sure
...
hope a lot happens the next couple episodes. Don't think I can watch another episode of just them yapping with nothing actually going on.
Edit: yeah the exposition and dialogue could have probably been fit into 1 or 2 episodes. The buildup of 6.5 episodes for things to finally get moving didn't really deliver anything great. It is nice to finally see things moving though. Payoff isn't worth it, viewers can probably skip the first 6 episodes and not really miss a beat. I would almost encourage it tbh.
