This is a great example of a well written short story. It takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, while creatively showing how people can mourn differently, and how hard it is to process someone just not being there anymore.
Honestly, I'm shocked by the bad reviews, it just seems like all the brilliant showcases of how people process different emotions just flew over their heads. There's tons of very deep and important life lessons to be found in this short story, and Id rather not spoil it for anyone, so all I'm gonna say is - it's fun, it's emotional, it's FILLED with absurdist wisdom
...
about life, memories and emotions, go ahead and give it a read, even if you somehow end up not liking it, it's just a 30min read.
Also, that might be the best most absurd and hilarious ending I've ever seen in any type of media. Chasing something for your entire life, not knowing what it is, just for it to be something so simple and easy, yet impossible to find, because we tend to look outwards for answers, instead of within ourselves, once we start "growing up".
Id also recommend this to everyone that likes philosophical subjects, as well as absurdism :)

Wasn't going to write a review, since I thought - "Hey, this anime is actually amazing, and is better then the hype suggested, which is very rare, kudos", but I guess that's not the case, since I've accidentally read some reviews here, and I just got really dissapointed that these people would bash on a genuinely original and creative show, just so they can look high and mighty. But I guess that's what reviewers do, ego is a wonderouss thing.
Anyway, I'll cut to the chase, since there's really not much to say about the anime, other then - Yup, it's that good. The writing
...
almost feels out of place in the anime world, because we've been brainwashed for years into expecting the same boring tropes and motifs over and over, from One piece, Naruto, Bleach, to MHA,JJK, Demon Slayer. Sure the animations get prettier, but it's the same old thing we've seen dozens of times. A main character, usually with a dark and sad backstory, training his ass off to become the ****** (pirate king, hokage, ultimate hero, whatever), and while chasing his dream, he meets a bunch of fun and loving characters that help him achieve his dreams through friendship and hard work.
Now sure, Shonen anime are popular, and I admit, even though I know they are basically low quality rewrites/reskins, I do enjoy the familiarity, especially when the animations are dope (looking at you Demon Slayer). But there's always been this huge problem - essentially, ALL of these anime are for kids below the age of 12. They are innocent, they want to fight against "evil" and "save" humanity - a concept that kids idolize, yet teens and adults know doesn't exist. In reality, unlike in most anime, evil isn't as linear. Saving someone could also prove to have been a bigger overall negative then positive at the end of the day. So we watch these shows as adults/teens, but deep in our minds know that it's all just cutesy bullshit, and it's very hard to relate.
Now this is where Chainsaw Man shines. It's themes and writing are VERY adult. The first 5 episodes already cover suicides, dreams, dealing with negative emotions, in such a real, hard hitting way. We've all dealt with having to give up on our dreams, or achieving dreams just to be dissapointed at the end, that the journey was more fun then the actual goal. Concepts that your average 13yo won't understand, or might, but not to it's full depth, cause how could they? They've not even started making real, doable dreams and goals.
This is a HUGE, MUCH NEEDED step in the right direction of anime (yes, i know, manga) writing, where the main character is someone adults can relate to. Denji (main character) isn't a typical "HUUU, I"M STRONK I WANNA SAVE THE VILLAGE" character, no, he doesn't give a fuck if you die or don't, and thank god for that. Most of us are aware that humans aren't necesserily "good", and yes we would do anything to save our beloved ones, but who cares what happens to this one dude I don't know. You might think it's sad, but it's just reality. Denji also has other goals - playing video games with a girl, eating all types of foods, not having to work. All fucking very relatable to adults who have been through many girlfriends and drama that comes with it, we just wanna game and be left alone. I don't wanna work, I don't wanna go out of my way to help a random stranger, Ilet me just play my shit. Denji is the embodiment of all mens purest dreams and goals, so that's a great start, a show where you can actually relate to the main character, which means that the choices he makes will actually make sense deeper in the story, and provides so much room for character development. And this is essentially the most important thing in writing - make it real and relatable. If i was in the position of the character, would i do the same? If yes, that's extremely good writing.
As far as the animation quality goes, it's without a doubt CURRENTLY the best looking anime (2022 December), it's steps ahead of previous best animations - Your name, A silent voice, Fate stay night heaven's feel trilogy. But we all expected as much anyway, we've seen how JJK looks and what Mappa is capable of.
The music and soundtrack are absolutely amazing, they're not quite on the same level as Made in Abyss, but it's still pretty impressive.
It's just a great anime, a breath of fresh air compared to all the unoriginal stories we've been getting, and I'm all for it. If you watch anime just for the anime tropes or weird anime shit, you'll be dissapointed, cause even though CSM has some VERY weird scenes, it differs from scenes like the Bakemonogatari (toothbrush scene) due to the realism added. Getting your first kiss, but the girl pukes in your mouth? Weird as fuck, but also very real if you try and kiss someone who drank 10 glasses of beer.
As you can tell from all the shit above, CSM has the potential to be the best written piece of anime we've ever seen, and IO'm optimistic about it, cause so far it has blown out every other anime's writing. A true gift is when you can write a silly scene, but have it end up as being very deep and impactful to the story and characters.
SO, DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SHIT REVIEWS HERE, GIVE IT A CHANCE. A LOT OF THE REVIEWS SHIT ON IT FOR BEING SEEMINGLY SIMPLISTIC, WHEN IT'S NOWHERE CLOSE TO IT, ITS JUST NOT EDGY AND IN YOUR FACE, YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR BRAIN AND CONNECT THE DOTS.

Came into this thinking I might as well watch an average anime to waste some time, since there's no hype surrounding it, and it's got the most average score on MAL.
I was pleasently surprised that the anime had a story and characters with so much depth, which is so rare to find these days outside of the top 100 anime's.
The story is quite simple, yet all of the little subplots along the way make it into one of the best stories I've seen in anime, and a lot of the times the show doesn't even seem like an anime because of it's harsh reality
...
and deep subplots that reveal the darkness of a humans soul. The action is amazing and there's not a lot of it thankfully, since A LOT of animes just lose the story by focusing too much on action and fights.
Now for the best part of the anime, it's characters. I can't remember the last time i was so intrigued by an anime's characters, and I've watched most of them (just finished watching Monster before starting this, and Monsters characters are pretty well developed, but still very bland compared to this). The development, the relationships between the characters, the way they blend in with the story and enrichen it, it's almost perfect.
To top it all of, it's got a nice pleasent pace, where a lot of the story focuses on just basic human survival and culture. It's an underrated anime, and it just keeps getting better, so If you feel like you don't want to watch it because of the CGI bear from episode 1, or because of the average score, give it a shot, you won't regret it, that is, if you're looking for a deep and serious story, and not another anime focusing on anime things.

After reading all the horrible reviews, I felt like the show gets undeserved hate, because it's a Netflix show, and because it doesn't fit in the classic anime show type norm.
The show presents a story of multiple characters, and their way of adjusting to being awoken in a post-apocalyptic world. While the plot is basic and unoriginal, the show does have a nice way of playing out.
Overall, the story is pretty decently written, there's multiple characters that are unique and developed quite nicely, the artstyle's above average and the soundtrack (i don't know if there even is one) is "meh".
If you've been reading other reviews,
...
I advise you to ignore them. I've read through most of them, and I am of the opinion that the people who wrote them were either:
a) Not mature enough to understand the situations the characters were placed in
b) They weren't paying attention because it's on Netflix, and people usually just put Netflix on in the background while doing work/studying/playing games etc.
c) High as f**k
The show isn't going to win any awards, nor would i say that it's in any way amazing (charactesr were pretty good), but, it's an above average show for sure that will keep you entartained, IF you're willing to invest yourself into it a bit, just enough to understand what the characters are going through.
It gets way more hate then it deserves, because it's on Netflix and because a lot of kids expected it to be more like your average survival video game/tv show.
I would compare this show to Shinsekai yori, which has a rating of 8.41 (on this day), and I would say that this show is just straight up better in all categories, except soundtrack (shinsekai yori soundtrack is a pure 10). And I don't think this is even debatable. The only reason one is rated poorly, and the other is rated highly, is because one is on Netflix, and the other is a niche show, aimed at anime hipsters ( I watched it till episode 22, then dropped it, then felt like i had to finish it, cause i was already close, and watched the last 3 episodes over a period of a few weeks. Point is, i finished it, thus i can use it as a comparison for other shows.)

Bland, boring and probably just a shameless attempt to get some easy money after "Kimi no na wa"s insane success.
The only part of the movie/shots that isn't absolute garbage is the animation, which would make sense since a lot of the people who worked on animating Kimi no na wa worked on this too.
The stories are horrid, uninspired and bland. The writing's not that bad, but it's obnoxious and pretentious, which i guess isn't something that can be avoided, since the plots basically are basically ramen, fashion and childhood romance nostalgia. As you can imagine, the first two are absolute garbage, while the third one
...
was watchable at least (although it still had no story to it).
Just save yourself from the dissappointment and time waste, you're literally better of watching ANY other show there is. Unless you're a fan of pretentious, slow paced shows with no story to them, then by all means give it a shot.

Big potential, subpar execution.
The story is original and very creative, but it falls short due to two things - a terrible main character and plot holes/inconsistency.
The soundtrack was amazing, perfectly fitting in and adding to the whole ominous atmosphere of the anime. Couldn't have been executed any better.
Now for the weakest link of the entire anime, the characters. Most of the characters are fine, with an exception of Satoru being good, but the main character, Saki, and a few other characters that should've been developed more were just poor. Saki's inconsistency in who she is gets annoying and draws away from the shows development. She
...
has poor judgement, is annoying and doesn't add anything to the plots she finds herself in. The other character that should've been explored more and done better is the village leader, Tomiko. So much potential there, but all we get from her is the fact that she's *unique* in a way (don't wanna spoil anything), although this ends up not having ANY impact on the show in any way. Could've just avoided the whole character. Same goes for Shisei, a powerful genius, but sadly, that's all he is. We don't know anything else about him, except the fact that he's strong.
The art was fine, maybe even great, but sadly, the way they dress people in the show just takes away from how good the art is. Weird ass sailor suits, dressing dudes like girls, the bad part of anime culture that sadly affects a lot of the shows still.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall, it's a fine show to watch if you're bored, can't find anything better AND are looking for a sort of mysterious vibe anime, with some great mysteries in it. Just don't take it TOO seriously, since that's what i did, cause the show will fuck up like no other show has ever. It went from a 10 to a 3, back to a 9, and then down to a 7 overall in my head. Plot holes, weird ass character development, time leaps that leave things unexplained solely for the purpose of hiding the plot holes and so on.
Also, tasteless unnecessary gay moments that have no reason to be in the show. The show explains that scientists experimented and added a bit of baboon(?) DNA to the human DNA, which makes these new humans act out sexually in stressful situations, which leads to all kind of weird tasteless shit. Even though it's explained, the whole thing should just be removed. No baboon DNA, no gay sexualizing of kids. This itself lowers the shows final score from an 8 to a 7.

So this is gonna be my first review, since i generally don't feel like putting my opinion up, but i just had to write one for this show, since all the ones I've read don't actually tackle the main issue the anime has - it has almost no connection to basketball whatsoever.
Kuroko no Basket's a decent to very good anime, It basically feels like the most average anime out there to me. And by that, what i mean is, It has so many of those anime clichés. A fiery tall (even though the dude's 190cm which is actually barely tall enough to make a basketball
...
team) dude teams up with a passive regular guy with a mysterious back story. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The anime itself does nothing new, which doesn't necessarily makes it bad, but It's a fair warning to those who're looking for new and interesting animes to watch. This isn't the anime for you.
Alright, i'll dig in to the biggest problem with the anime that i had. The basketball aspect of it. That was supposed to be the thing that separates it from the other ones, that brings some ingenuity to the show. It doesn't. As a huge basketball fan, and a guy who plays it on the regular, I was immensely disappointed. While watching the show, I couldn't shake the feeling that the creators didn't even try to research what basketball is, how it's played and why it's such a beautiful game. Nobody expected Japanese anime creators to be that familiar with it in the first place, but this was just beyond disappointing. The anime could've been about 10 teens playing dice against eachother and it would've still been exactly the same.
And I promise I'm not being too harsh, I'm not gonna bash on them for repeating the exact same dunk 30 times in the season, or a variety of 3 passes and 2 shots, I get it, a fast paced sport isn't that easy to animate and they didn't want that to be the focal point in the first place.
But come on. In one episode, the protagonist team faces off against a team that's supposed to have the best defense in Tokyo. Apperently they use some sort of martial art training to be that good at it, which is beyond reasonable, but that's not even the main issue. The team is literally doing the worst thing you can on defense - They're overcommiting to their man. Why's that? How does a team beat 5 excelent defenders that stick to you like glue? Well, there's this really simple thing in basketball, called a "screen". I'm not gonna go into any depth to explain what it is, but i promise you, you can't watch an actual basketball game and not see it happen at least 10 times. It's as old as basic as a lay-up.
And again, there are dozens of even worse situations in the show, which obviously come up from the creators lack of basketball knowledge. Another great example would be that Kagami, their tallest guy and center, obviously isn't their center. So the floor spacing makes absolutely no sense. And this is all a consequence of the creators lack of knowledge to what a post-up is. There are 0 post-ups in the show. Again, watch a basketball game. There won't be less then 10 post-ups, i promise.
And, this next example I want to talk about is just beyond me. I don't even know what the hell the creators were doing. In a LOT of the scenes where they're playing a game, and one of the team is on the offense, there's literally an offensive player behind that halfcourt line. Sometimes there's even two. There's two dudes, in a basketball game, just chilling in the backcourt, while the star of the team is handling the ball, even though he's usually the center and has no business of doing that, as the clocks ticking down ( although there's no 24 sec clock in the show either, sometimes the offensive play lasts for about a min or so). Id be shocked if there was ever a case of that happening, or if it ever happens in an actual basketball game.
There's times where the player scores/makes a defensive play, or whatever, and the players just forget that they're on the court playing basketball. By that i mean, they get into deep conversations and such for again, a minute or so, destroying the entire flow of the game.
I want to finish by saying that the characters are alright, the plots not enjoyable even though it's insanely unoriginal, the animation is nice (expect when they're playing basketball, which one would think should've been their main focus), so it's not a bad show. Just stay away from it if you're searching for a show about basketball. Or even if you'd like a show where basketballs a small part of it. This has got nothing to with it, other then the general clichés that apply to all sports (teamwork beats talent, never give up, work hard and you'll be rewarded etc.).
On the other hand, if you don't care about basketball, and just want a decent anime with familiar content within it, give it a go, it's a pretty decent anime by those standards.
