Both: - MC have dark past/chiildhood - Supernaturals in both shows have overlaps - World building is done well - MCs are pure-hearted, and sincere - Fun supernaturals characters - more supernaturals characters than humans - Fight scenes have low tension Difference: there's quite a bit of difference, but both are really good shows and fun to watch if you like to know about these supernatural beings and how they can be portrayed differently - Mononogatari MC is much more spirited than Natsume's - Plot in Mononogatari is more Shounen-ish and exciting as compared to the laid back Natsume's slice of life story plot(but pace for monogatari is on the slow side, almost like slice of life) - There are clear villains in Mononogatari, characters/ villains in Natsume's are usually episodic Both are great shows all in all, so do catch both if you are interested in one or the other!

Both: - are pretty to look at (art style is decent and unique) - have a pure hearted male MC who is no drama and straight forward - are occult related (supernaturals here and there) - MC, and story POV are on the side of the living humans who are also official government factions - World logic acknowledges the existent of supernaturals among the communities involved. So not like only MC have to deal with it while no one else knows his/her woes. - MCs are in the position to affect the lives of the supernaturals - Interesting characters (distinct) - Similar paced, closer to Slice of Life than that of typical shounen story telling - Origins of supernaturals are explained - Absolutely deserved another season Difference: - Mayonaka no occult atmosphere is more solemn/strict as compared to Mononogatari - though the back story of the MCs in Mononogatari is much darker than Mayonaka - Supernaturals are of a different nature in both shows (no overlap at all) Both are great shows all in all, so do catch both if you are interested in one or the other!

Both have: - Very good music! (This point is the main point~) - Slice of Life vibes as both storylines just go through the day to day of people in a band - Highschoolers Main Characters, so full of youthful woes and hope, and naivety. But Given is a little darker due to MC having a real traumatic past, and also there are adults with complicated lives being the supporting characters, Bocchi The Rock is mostly sunshine and rainbows, other than the MC having serious social anxiety and pessimism. - Live band premise - Good, pretty art Difference: Given will have a little more drama due to MC's past and also the element of romance. Bocchi the Rock doesn't actually have any drama, just comedic story lines.

Both are dark fantasy themed Both have demons in them as the basis for its stories Both are actually set in olden days Both brings in the moral compass of humanity into question (discreetly) while using the demons as its premise While Mononoke is a collection of 3 separate stories with no overarching plot, Dororo starts of with an episodic story-telling featuring a different demon each episode, then develops into a shounen drama. If you are interested in the demons and folklores, then give the other a try.

Both have the MC dealing with supernatural beings that eventually meant removing them from the human world (Fukigen in a friendlier way than Mononoke) Both have comedic elements intertwined with their dark story plots Both art actually gives off a fun and lighthearted feel Fukigen starts off with an episodic story telling style, introducing a new supernatural being, then slowly moves on to establishing its overarching story, while Mononoke is a collection of 3 stories of 3 different types of supernatural beings Fukigen is way more lighthearted and fun than Mononoke. Mononoke touches on humanity and its morals with regard to the supernatural being that it deals with in the plot

Both story-telling are episodic at the start (But for Jigoku, it took about 1.5 season of such episodic story telling before the overarching story starts to build up) Both shows you a glimpse of the other world (Fukigen definitely portrays it much more colourful and fun) Both MC helps their client from their problems that essentially meant involving the other world (Both MC are like agents of this other world) Both MC have an underlying dark past that reveals slowly throughout the show Despite these similarities, I recommend one to the other mainly for their portrayal of the other world. I find both portrayal interesting. Jigoku is a way darker show than Fukigen as it touches a lot on humanity and its morals; psychological genre is its core genre Fukigen is more lighthearted and cheerful though the underlying darkness is there, it is still mild as compared to Jigoku

Both stories revolve around some sort of folklore/legend/myths/supernatural beings. Both are lighthearted while the events going on in the plot are heavier and darker. Both have the same concept with regard to how the supernatural beings operate: unpredictable by human logic Both have the slice of life vibe to them amidst the drama that is happening (but Mayonaka is a notch more serious than Uchouten) If you enjoy knowing and watching how various myths and lore are being portrayed differently through different artists, then you can give the other a shot. Mayonaka is essentially portraying the supernatural world from the view of a human While Uchouten is a very unique show that portrays the supernatural world from the viewpoint of the supernatural being (the MC)

Both are of the occult theme (Robin uses the Witch as its only occult element, while Mayonaka have a variety of lore and supernatural beings) Both anime uses a darker colour tone to brings out their occult theme, which sets a good cozy mood Both story concepts are about "officials" solving cases related to the occult Both MC are essentially young and "pure", trying to learn the ropes of their working environment Both MC have "powers" that they are learning to work with Both shows are largely episodic with an overarching story (Mayonaka is a relatively new story, and imo, the overarching story is still building up and will be more established in following seasons, currently (as of this writing), there is only 1 season.) Robin is a much darker and serious anime than Mayonaka. Mayonaka has comedic elements with slight "slice of life" vibe

Both involves the MC solving an issue caused by supernatural beings Both the MC works in a way that tries to bring about more understanding to "why and what" is causing the issue Mayonaka is largely episodic with an over-arching plot building up, while Mononoke is a collection of 3 stories Both anime have their very own distinct art style, and both are very pleasing to the eyes (at least to mine, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder after all) Both have comedic and lighthearted moments intertwined with the heavier, darker storylines, yet does not discount the climaxes. Mayonaka is set in modern time, while Mononoke stories are all set in the past.

Both are supernatural/occult Both MC have special ability that brings them closer to the supernatural world Both MC have a friend/side kick from the supernatural world Both shows feature similar categories of demons and supernatural beings, though they are put in different spotlights Both story-telling style are generally episodic (But Mayonaka is a rather new story, and gives off the vibes that the over-arching plot is interesting, but since there is only 1 season so far, nothing much can be established. While Tactics did manage to tie up most of its storylines in the anime itself.) Mayonaka is in current times, while Tactics is set in the past. Mayonaka has slightly more comedic moments, and there's a larger cast of relevant characters. Both have different concepts, but if you like shows that introduces the supernatural beings/ folklores with the human world as the background, then give the other a shot.

Both have premises that are on the darker side of the world. Both touches on sensitive (possibly taboo or mature in some cultures) subjects in the show. But Kabukichou does it in a very nonchalant way while in Banana Fish, those sensitive subjects are what makes the story. Kabukichou is a lot more diverse in its genres, characters, and storylines. You can't really see the similarity unless you break the show down. It isn't as straightforwardly dark nor is it as attractively solemn as Banana Fish.

They both have a big serving of lightheartedness sprinkled with humourous events, and have a large side of teenage friendship to go along with. This recommendation may seem odd, but there certainly are similarities in both of these shows. The most notable one would be their slice of life story plot. Even though Marginal#4 isn't tag with slice of life, and it looks absolutely like an Idol show, but I would describe Marginal#4 as a slice of life show with the Idol world as its background. Only the concept are similar here. They both uses the Music world as their background for its main story. In Nodame, is the Romance between the protagonist. In Marginal#4, is the Slice of Life of the protagonists that is being showcased. I am recommending the other anime just in case there are people who prefer shows that have a touch of music, but not centering its plot entirely on it. Though there's a notch more music trivia in Nodame than in Marginal#4 Both are lighthearted to a large extend and have their fair share of humour bits thrown around.

Both are about the supernatural beings. There is a similar setting here too. Both MC have a family past that is connected with their present encountering of the supernatural. This setting is the main context of Natsume. While in Mayonaka, it is important, but it does not centre around it. Mayonaka have a concoction of settings in its story concept that actually takes a different direction than Natsume. Natsume takes on the relaxing, lighthearted vibe as is a slice of life, while Mayonaka is a little more intense and mysterious (well detective being one of its story elements) However, if you like learning more about the supernatural beings through different creators and context, give the other a shot. They both naturally incorporate little details and information of the supernaturals in their respective context. Very amusing to see the supernaturals being represented slightly differently in each show. The characters in both show are easy to like too. But Mayonaka's characters do stand out more due to its story settings. Both have different art styles, with Natsume's being easy on the eyes, while Mayokana have a Very Pretty (imo) and distinct art style. As of the time of recommendation, Natsume can be describe as an established story with many seasons for it to develop and expand its plot. Mayonaka on the other hand is like a budding flower. From the anime, it is very much just a beginning of a potentially interesting and more action packed story. I am just hoping Mayonaka get more exposure and have its story produced to meet the expectations of its potential.

Both are about the supernatural beings. Fukigen has a more lighthearted undertone as compared to Mayonaka. Both will introduce you to the supernatural creatures as casually as their context allow. And from what I can tell, both have great potential to develop further, but are just not getting enough exposure. Both animes are currently only showing the very beginning of their stories, though you can expect the story to develop well if given the chance, they do wrap up the anime without a cliffhanger so you don't feel a sense of great loss if a continuation is not in planning. The concept for both animes are interesting and amusing, so do give the other a shot and check it out.

Both are Occult theme story. xxxHolic starts of with an episodic story telling format too. But it has a little more connection from one episode to the next as compared to Mayonaka. They both include the legends/lore/background of the supernatural beings casually into the storytelling. xxxHolic may have included a tad more details though. xxxHolic is more lighthearted for the most part, and have more of a "Slice of Life" feel to it. Different art style, I won't say xxxHolic is pretty, but is certainly amusing and occasionally gives off a sophisticated feel instead. Main Character is voiced by the same VA~ And I do adore both MC too. Character design for both MCs are interesting. A small warning though, xxxHolic did not wrap up the story in a satisfying manner (everything was going well until they try to wrap up), not sure about the manga. Mayonaka is relatively new, so I can't really comment on the story when so little is known, hopefully it gets more exposure and the story develops to meet its potential (as well as my expectations).
