If you like YuGiOh for it's story, games, and battles - and how those are paced, then Gundam Build Fighters 2013 is where to look. To me it's the true spiritual successor to Duel Monsters's format. However, if instead you like YuGiOh for it's style and presentation, then I highly recommend checking out Tekken 1998. You'll recognise and come to understand a huge amount of director Kunihisa Sugishima's screen language. It was a delightful thing to watch, like a museum of visual ideas I've seen in YuGiOh.

Mushiking shares the same character designer [Yoshihiko Umakoshi], director [Shigeyasu Yamauchi], music composer [Kaoru Wada], sound effect designer [Tooru Noguchi], writer [Ryuu Kamio], and series composer [Reiko Yoshida] as Casshern Sins. And you can really tell within minutes. They're basically the same show. Coming out a few years earlier, Mushiking is the proto-Casshern Sins. If you love Casshern Sins, you will love Mushiking. Sub recommended.

Extremely similar premise of small cute girls posing in for cats. Except the execution, animation and story are all a lot stronger here. The Star of Cottonland is a struggle between an owner-pet dynamic, while in the context of trying to fit into ones family. While on the other side of that is Chibi-neko tries to come to terms with the futility of trying to become human.

Dororo to Hyakkimaru

It's like Dororo's atmosphere and world-feel in Jamurai Jack's robot setting and episodic-ness with a sprinkle of [Mushishi] introspection in places. And fuck tonnes of post-apocalypse [Angel's Egg] darkness.

Similar time period, and art style. Both historical, drama genre; with realistic acting characters. A lack of anime-baggage. Both very high quality.
