Okay so, I have never written a review on here before but here we go. I literally just started and finished this manga today so this is very new on my mind.
Overall, I did like this manga. Like other reviewers, I did think that the sex scenes were redundant. Some of them were definitely unnecessary, but all in all I think that there is a reason that Inio Asano put them in. I did not know there were going to be a ton of sex scenes when I started reading it so very glad I didn't read this on a plane like I was planning.
I
...
would recommend this manga to people who have had similar experiences in their life, but also think that the sex scenes are to a point that you really need to be able to sympathize and understand Asano's reasoning for the structure of the story or the manga will not be enjoyable. At the same time, I believe that this manga shows an important look into adolescence and how everyone sees everything from a different point of view. I don't know maybe I just like it because I'm a psychology major.
Anyways, I think that Inio Asano wrote this manga to break down barriers. The barriers are there to show a less sugarcoated version of adolescence than is typically seen in many mangas. I noticed this theme in Goodnight Punpun as well which is why I picked up this manga in the first place. For the sex scenes, I will say it made me extremely uncomfortable to read (and see) about fourteen-year-olds having sex. On the same token, I think this went along with his theming and explaining the lack of innocence many childhoods contain.
Despite the abundance of sex scenes, I still rated this manga an 8 because it quite literally tore my heart out and ripped it into a million pieces. Not to be that person, but as someone that was heavily sexualized at that age among people at school, which made me feel as though that was the only way to get someone to ever love me, I really sympathized with Koume. I think that the book depicts an important experience that many people, not just girls, encounter (including Isobe). Isobe even talked about how he didn't want to have sex, along with Koume saying that she would do other sexual things if Isobe seemed upset.
The ending of the book (I don't want to spoil it) made me so sad. I think that it shows the lesson of not appreciating what you have when you have it. Even though this was true, I really wish they had ended up together.
