I've seen extremely mixed reviews for this anime, and for good reason. It really isn't for everyone. It's for those looking for a hype as fuck movie to watch with your friends over.
Story: 4
The story isn't extremely unique and definitely doesn't do it the best. The story is halted in some places and rushed in others. It's put as secondary importance, which would usually not work at all but does here. The story doesn't really matter in Promare, because this is literally just giant robots fighting with fire because robots and fire are cool.

Gorgeous. Just watch the trailer and see the art for yourself.
...
It went above and beyond with the animation, color scheme, just everything.
Sound: 10
I'm listening to Lio's theme on loop right now. It's amazing and so is the rest of the music. Please just listen to it yourself it's great.
Character: 9
Most of the main characters don't make much of an appearance, but their character designs are so good. All of them. They didn't just give them a generic design and slap them in the background. They made them all hot and then slapped them in the background. The characters that are important are also extremely hot and I swear that's not the only thing I'm ranking them on but their character designs are great.
Enjoyment: 10
It's just overall a fun time also they're gay they're very gay and I love them.
Overall: 9
I just really enjoyed this movie. It really doesn't take itself seriously at all and knows and makes fun of the lacking plot.

Overall: 6
I really enjoyed this show, but it's nothing special. If you're looking for a nice 'lie down and mindlessly watch' kinda anime, I'd really recommend this one. It's visually appealing and not hard to follow. The reason for my average score is because that's what it is, average. Let me explain.
Story: 4
The story is exactly what the synopsis says, and the same overused trope in anime. Student stumbles upon a club, becomes fascinated in it, and joins the club to try to do what they do. They don't really add much to that basic plot, which makes it repetitive. It's not inherently bad, but
...
it does nothing special, nor tries to. At least not in the story.
Art: 8
The art style itself is also very average. However, it is nicely animated, bringing life into the movement. Typically, the shots show the main group talking to each other, but they're not animated with one movement. They're all animated separately with their own seperate actions, which I find nice. The animation really shines when they're performing. 3D programs are used for the wider shots, but it's split with 2D animation when character expressions are important. When animated, It's very fluid for the budget it was probably given as a seasonal anime.
Sound: 8
I am a huge fan of the op and ed of this show. The op was made by the same band who made much of Given's music, and I love all of their music. This is no exception. The music perfectly shows the audience how the characters feel when they're performing. The ed is also very calm and reminds you that this is just a simple, relaxing show.
Character: 3
They introduce too many characters. The main 6 characters are necessary, even though some of them have little personality. the coach and manager are nice background characters with enough individuality to make you like them. The characters in their rival team are mostly completely unnecessary, with the exception of Mashiro, who has a connection with another character. The entire rival team is just reflections of the main cast, and it's hard to keep track of everyone. The only characters who are really expanded upon are Futaba and Misato, who have a sweet relationship. The four others in the main team all have one thing (object or activity) that is their personality. It's extremely flat and unoriginal.
Enjoyment: 7
Regardless of the criticism, I enjoyed watching this anime every week. It was a nice way to just lie down and mindlessly watch.
Overall: 6
This anime, as I have stated before, is very average and unoriginal. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and I am excited to see how the newly announced movie turns out.

I really want to rank this anime higher than I did, but I can't bring myself to. I see why people love this anime. It has a lot of strengths and is a good watch if you just want some feels. However, there are some major points that I can't just ignore. This is my first review, and there will be some minor spoilers that will have warnings.
Story: 5
Ok, hear me out. The general concept is fine, it's a little decentralized but that's ok because they do have an actual story. My problem is with the treatment of backstories. Kousei has a tragic backstory, which
...
is linked to the piano, and his ability to play it. He is physically and mentally not ready to play the piano but is shoved back into the world of music because the people around him decide that it's time for him to move on. This is extremely toxic, as 1 he should make his own decisions and 2 if he is not making any progress after the passing of his mother, should be directed to a professional who can help.
**SPOILER WARNING** After practicing the piano some more, he comes to realize that his mother has always been with him, and is ready to move on. This entire concept doesn't sit right with me, going off of how she was described and shown to treat him. **SPOILER OVER**
Symbolism is also repeated a lot, very easy to spot, and very blatant. Occasionally, it takes away from the emotion of a scene just to make a comparison between an event and a symbol.
Art: 7
The art style is fine, nothing over-the-top special but above average for when they're actually given an instrument. The animation of Kaori playing the violin is very good but sets a high bar for the rest of the animation, which obviously can't be reached.
Sound: 9
The OP and ED are very nice choices for this anime, but the sound really shines when they're on stage. Everything the judges describe, whether it be the piano keys being hit too hard or the battle between two parts in a duet, can be clearly heard in the music. The sound has clearly been treated with a lot of care and it shows.
Character: 3
Most of the characters are between likable and tolerable, which is fine on its own, but there are two characters who are extremely toxic and brushed off.
The first character is Kousei's mom. She is shown to be abusive, only caring about how perfectly he can play a song. The show treats her two ways. One of which is underwhelming, as kousei is shown to bleed in the head and have bruises all over his arms when he is practicing. Nobody in the show cares too much about it unless it gets to a far worse point. The second way the show treats her is sympathetic. All the characters who know about her death (and know how she treated kousei) either grieved for her passing or pitied the people who grieved. Everyone ignored the actions she did against her son and even bullied him for being too good at the piano.
The second character I want to talk about is Tsubaki. I have seen absolutely nobody talk about how toxic she is. A lot of the things she does involves major spoilers, so I won't touch on them right now, but one scene that is extremely minor and happens in the first episode goes as follows: Kousei asks if there is anything to him besides playing the piano. She starts to answer "yeah there's a lot like,,,,, uh,,,,,,,," and the scene is played off as a joke. This happens again in a later episode, which really shows how unappreciative she is of having a good friend.
Enjoyment: 5
This is where I will mention the pacing because it's all over the place. Some of it isn't their fault, like the need to fill up an entire 4 minute song with a monologue about one of the five tragic backstories introduced. However, most of the story doesn't hook the watcher that well, and I found myself not very interested in what was happening.
Overall: 6
As I said in the begining, I really want to give this a higher score than I did. Honestly, If it wasn't for the two toxic characters and how they were handled, I would have probably given this anime a solid 8/10, but since those two were very important overall, I can't in good conscience give this any higher than a 6.
