Redo of Healer is one of the worst anime I have ever seen. Let’s deconstruct it point by point in order of relevance.
Characters:
Redo of Healer doesn’t have characters, it has paper thin caricatures. None of the characters have any depth to them, nothing to make them seam like real people. None of them go trough any type of growth (if you discount brain washing). There is no attempt to explore the main characters (MC) psychology, trauma or give him any depth. The worst are the villains which are just evil for evil sake. Absolutely no motivation is provided for their actions. Their behavior can be
...
summarized as follows: We do sadistic, evil stuff because we are evil sadists; that’s it.
Story/Plot:
Story is simple, linear, a barebones revenge story that still somehow menages to be illogical and full of plot holes. That is because the story is not trying to give us a good, well tough-out narrative, but serves only to provide opportunities to showcase sexual violence and torture. These elements are used as a shock factor and have no meaning beyond that. Moreover, the revenge story is very unsatisfactory. That is because this anime is a harem power fantasy at the same time. Various unexplained overpowered abilities just fall into our MCs lap whenever the plot demands it. That makes for a very poor revenge story devoid of suspense.
Worldbuilding/Setting:
The worldbuilding is generic, superficial and lacking in general. There is no attempt to make us understand or immerse in this world. For example, this world has RPG game elements and mechanics, there are levels and stats but this is not an isekai. There is no reincarnation/transport in to a game world so why are there game mechanics, no idea, its not explained. We also get a number of, now standard tropes. We have a hero who is discriminated for being a support role, an evil princess and beast slave girl.
Themes:
Redo of Healer boast itself as a dark fantasy with mature themes. I beg to differ, there is nothing mature about this anime. All of its dark themes like rape, torture, hate, genocide, trauma; are handled in a very crude, superficial way. They exist for cheap shock value and are so over the top that they become a parody. If you are expecting a mature exploration of difficult themes, look elsewhere. This anime is like a childe trying to speak in a deep voice to sound like an adult but one glance is enough to see it is a child pretending. Redo of Healer also somehow menages to be insulting to everyone. It misogynic – all named female characters (except one) are raped at some point (yes, using a position of authority to coarse someone into accepting sex is rape, using drugs and brainwashing to make someone accept sex is also rape). Female characters are heavily objectified and used as brainless sex toys. The anime is of a position that women should support the male protagonist no matter what and be happy to be used. Female rape scenes are also very sexualized. The anime is also misandrist – All men are apparently latent sexual predators. A drop of aphrodisiac is enough to make any man into a raging monster that will rape women till death. As for the only 2 LGBT character, we got a murderer/rapist lesbian that is discussed by men; and a murder/rapist/pedophile gay man.
There is not much to say on the technical merits of this anime, they are mostly acceptable.
Art:
Character design and art in general are generic, nothing terrible but nothing exceptional either.
Animation:
Animation is average for this type of story. It is serviceable.
Sound:
Again, music is adequate. Voice acting ranges from average to fine in a few cases.
All in all, this anime is basically an edgy power fantasy harem that tries to use sexual violence and torture to distinguish itself from many other works in this genre. The end result is woefully subpar.
Score:
Characters – 0, Story – 1, Worldbuilding – 1, Themes – 0, Art – 3, Animation – 5, Sound – 5 which gives the final score of 2.
