I don't like writing any reviews at all, but I will stand for Amnesia. I watched Amnesia when it was released in 2013, didn't quite like it, and gave it a bad rating. In the following years, I forgot everything about the show and randomly played the game somewhere along the way and absolutely adored it. In the aftermath of not being able to reach the sequel games, I stumbled upon the anime again and then rewatched the series with a whole new perspective. So I must state before I start, that this is an anime based on a visual novel, please bear that in
...
mind.
Story = 9
The part I love the most in Amnesia is its genius narrative choice based on the storyline. It easily hooks you in, never gets boring, nor fails to surprise. It is always a smart premise to use parallel universes in this type of harem trope. The way the show tackles it is very creative and it gets you wondering what will happen in a different setting all the time, and you could never guess.
The other side of the coin is patching all individual stories and routes into one consecutive narrative. In visual novel terms, each playthrough of respective character routes brings you a fresh world with twists and tweaks, and after an ending, it starts again. Surprisingly, anime does not fail to portray it. The whole anime is connected and open-ended so that you can enjoy it with an unbiased eye.
Art = 6
The art in the anime is fairly bad compared to the game. In game adaptations, I do not try to keep my hopes up in animation quality, yet the studios fail to bring the most catching component of the game ~the captivating character visuals~ to the anime (eg. Dramatical Murder) The original designs are very creative, characters are animated decently for most of the time, but I can't say it was great. I wish it could be better, then it could be far more enjoyable.
Sound = 9
The voices are so fitting to the characters and the music is very great in creating the atmosphere. I'm just very happy that they are loyal to the original voice actors/actresses. I would cry if any of them had been changed.
Character = 8
Although the main character, "heroine, you" whatever you want to call her is plain and mainstream to a fist-clenching and facepalming level, I couldn't bring myself to hate her, maybe I am just used to by now. This is not the first time a female heroine has such a character. Well, lucky for us, especially the main love interests are quite the looker and each character besides the heroine is lively and loveable. I love how they come up with the idea of the manager, Waka-san.
Enjoyment = 7
I enjoyed rewatching after playing the game and being able to get animated CG moments is pure bliss. Again if the art was better it could've been very nice, but that is just my humble opinion.
Overall = 8
Overall I liked it and can proudly say it was very good. It might come as fast pacing and some scenes would have been left hanging in the air for the ones who haven't played the game, but I don't think this is something to be that critical about. I believe the raison d'être of this anime is meant for the players, to begin with. I'm feeling quite positive about Amnesia, therefore I have high hopes for getting more of this genre in the future.
