Want to watch a show about coming to terms with loss, especially loss of a dear friend? This is what both AnoHana and Gakkougurashi are largely about, and they both succeed in making the viewer cry waterfalls in the process. The slice-of-life feel is handled differently in the shows; AnoHana is about more realistic relationships and drama, while Gakkougurashi goes to both extremes with comedic scenes and horror/suspense. Without giving away too many spoilers, it can be said that both series also have melancholic yet emotionally satisfying endings.

Gakkougurashi!

Gakkou Gurashi and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 are both anime that depict a small group of people coping with the follow-up of a massive disaster. Gakkou Gurashi has a zombie outbreak destroying the society, while in Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 a huge earthquake tears Tokyo down to ruins. In addition to the constant fighting for survival that the characters have to deal with, both shows give hints of the emotional turmoil and denial that some of them experience as a coping mechanism.

Cute high-school girls destroying zombies! Both Gakkou Gurashi and High School of the Dead can be categorized as 'fan service', be it boobs or just goofy moe humor. Both also have plenty of spooky situations and an environment that forces the main cast to fight for their survival.

In case you're a physics nerd then look no further. Or even if you're not and are just looking for something to exercise your brain cells with, then you should definitely give this series a try. Your hunger for science-related adventures will certainly be quenched in a visually and emotionally stunning way. The show takes place in a what-if scenario in which astrophysics/the multiverse theory is a major influence in the story. Also, in both cases the consequences can often be lethal or at least extremely hazardous to the main cast. So prepare your napkins, because you're going on a feels trip - to space/the past!

Hitsugi no Chaika
add

The similarities between FMA and Hitsugi no Chaika are numerous. Both shows are set in an alternative fantasy universe, where a supernatural technique is used in everyday life, as well as in battling bad guys and, most importantly, in warfare. The main character cast is journeying to achieve a goal, even though the exact details of this goal are shrouded in mystery. They are also followed by mysterious side characters that all have their own hidden agendas. Both shows feature a pair of siblings that share a humorous but overall a sweet and a genuine bond. In addition, both of these anime have skillfully balanced the light-hearted and the more serious scenes, as well as the one-episode adventures and the multi-episode chains where the plot progresses fast. While watching these shows, you feel like you could almost turn them into each other just by changing a few plot points and character designs. I'm not implying that either one is bad or even unoriginal, but that if you enjoyed one then you'll definitely enjoy the other too.

For anyone who enjoys seeing many different nationalities represented in an anime, this show is a must! Even though neither of these has a Japanese character as a protagonist, both shows focus a lot on how Japan views the rest of the world and vice versa. Both shows also deal with global politics more or less realistically, and both are also filled with handsomely drawn male characters that'll keep any yaoi-shipper busy.

Incestuous feelings. Need I say more? Both shows have a male protagonist that has complicated feelings towards his both sister and another girl, so a love triangle ensues. Both shows are very visually beautiful, emotional and feature memorable soundtracks.

These two anime have a similar outward appearance to them: both feature nature and bugs as sort of an underlying theme behind the 'plot', both have big-eyed teenagers with mixed feelings towards each other and both have gory scenes. If you enjoy looking at bugs and blood, then this is your type of show.

If you love dirty jokes and endless sexual innuendos in a show where every character is more or less twisted and perverted, then look no further. Both PSG and Shimoneta also feature an innocent male protagonist, or a 'cherry boy', that slowly gets sucked into participating in the lewd antics of the perverted female protagonist.

Do you enjoy watching a romance anime with heart and good character development put into it? Do you enjoy a show laced with beautiful scenery, memorable music and a mix of FEEELS? Both these shows left an impact in me, and their difficult themes and catchy opening songs haunted me long after I had finished watching them. Yosuga no Sora and Clannad After Story deal with dating, crushes and family drama in the first arcs but turn to more mature themes towards the end. Both shows are, in their own ways, absolutely unforgettable.

Do you like following the adventures of a chill protagonist, whose childish behavior hides his true strength and maturity? Do you enjoy comedy anime in general? Both these shows feature a man working in all sorts of occupations and missions. The shows are mostly episodic and each episode comes with it's own set of side characters that the protagonist guy has to assist in some way.

Do you enjoy comedy shows laced with parodies, odd but lovable characters, unexpected action scenes and surprisingly thoughtful undertones? Both Gintama and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei are a must watch for the fans of this sort of Japanese humor. Although they do require at least a shallow understanding of the culture and popular anime/manga due to the constant references and parody gags, so if you just got into watching anime you might want to save these for later.

What both these series have in common is an unforgettable soundtrack, a ton of material for yuri-shipping and the constant, breathtaking action. The protagonists Ange and Mai are similarly forced to grow stronger in order to cope with a harsh environment. Both series have a large and varied cast that'll make you get attached to at least a few characters. Both also have girls fighting either beasts or other girls.
