The Eminence in Shadow is a rare instance where I dropped an anime—not because it’s particularly bad or unwatchable, but simply because it didn’t keep me interested enough to continue watching. The show starts with a unique premise: by day, a high schooler, but by night, Batman! It follows a kid who wants to push his limits and become the strongest man on the planet, even stronger than an atomic bomb. I actually enjoyed this fresh take, as most isekai anime I’ve watched start with the MC either being a lowlife or just an average joe. However, while the initial setup is solid, it's also ... awkward. In fact, any of the first 3 eps could serve as a first ep.

Nonetheless, the anime held my interest until episode 5, but unfortunately, that’s where it ended for me. When the next "arc" begins in episode 6, I found myself no longer enjoying the show. I pushed on to episode 10, hoping something would reignite my interest, but to no avail. The comedy around Cid wanting to stay a background character no longer hit the mark. His obliviousness to the fact that he’s actually running an organization and fighting a cult, not just street bandits, began to annoy me. Apparently, these themes continue throughout both seasons of the anime and the ongoing light novel. Seemingly, this is a parody anime, but for some reason, I couldn't see it as one.

In the end, I'd say this show simply didn't meet my expectations. Whether I'm to blame because I went in with high expectations, or maybe LN readers are over praising a mediocre work, or simply I'm not the target audience for this. In any case, I’m left disappointed and uninterested in watching further, and I can't recommend this to anyone unless you have nothing else to watch. Again, it’s not particularly bad or unwatchable, which is why I’m giving a fair rating to the first half I saw, but I can’t deny that it felt like a waste of my time.

Isekai Ojisan is a show I was hyped for. Unfortunately, I'm saddened it couldn't live up to my expectations.

Experiencing the isekai adventure then showing it to your nephew distinguished Ojisan from other isekai protagonist. This idea alone intrigued me to watch it. Other than the usual tropes (Harem, Overpowered MC, etc.), the raw and light-hearted comedy, coupled with jumping back and forth from modern day to the journey's "recordings" made a quirky but distinctive formula, which is something that I enjoyed.

However, problems with production were apparent through out the show. The inconsistency in animation quality is something that bothered me. I get that the animation ... style was "different" and im all for it, but some episodes looked like they were drawn by kindergarteners. I did not watch Isekai Ojisan while it was airing, but I read that there was delays in airing leading to the show needing sometime close to a year to completely air. This could be the cause of the poor production.

In conclusion, this show had potential that wasn't fulfilled in my opinion, but it still can be enjoyed if taken light-heartedly. Hope season 2 is adapted better !
