Quick Synopsis
The story revolves around the romantic life of Miyazawa Yukino and Soichiro Arima. Yukino is the "perfect" role model who is beautiful, perfect, intelligent, and loved by everyone. However, deep down inside, she’s the opposite. She’s like a psycho angry girl who puts up a "role model" front to get attention. When Yukino attends high school, her
...
first ambition is to get the highest test scores, and to become the most admirable girl in school. However, her goals are crushed when she finds that Soichiro Arima is scoring higher scores, is way more talented, better looking, and loved by everyone. The worst part is, he isn’t faking it the way Yukino is! Because of this, Yukino holds a grudge against Arima and starts to truly hate him (But whenever she’s around him, she "pretends" to be nice).
One day, as Yukino and Arima pass in the wallways, Arima goes up to Yukino and confesses to her, saying that he has always loved her. Yukino thinks that Arima is just trying to "trick" her, but in the end, Arima’s feelings for Yukino are expressed in a way that can’t possibly be a lie. Yukino begins to fall in love with Arima and thus their love blossoms~!
Story
I love it i love it i LOVE it. There are so many things about Kare Kano that make the story perfect. I really like high school romances that revolve around ONE main couple and no weird love triangles or squares or whatever… Because of that, it allows space for the two characters to grow, and the relationship to deepen. The anime lacks in "drama" and just focuses on romance. "Wait…if there’s no drama, wtf is the anime supposed to be about?" Well… it just goes into the inner thoughts of the characters, basically. But that’s what I LOVE about Kare Kano. Omg…The the anime expresses how the Yukino and Arima are in love with each other in a way that’s so believable you can’t help but go KYAA~! Well, scratch that. It’s more of a deeper feeling than "KYAA". You just feel this rush of emotions and make you realize why people fall in love with each other, and how much being in love means, etc… Tho, i can see why people wouldn’t like it. I mean… if you’re a boy who has never really been in love before, then Kare kano would be some crap and boring shit that you wouldn’t understand… ah well..
What i also love is the humor. The humor in anime made in the 1990’s shall always be fresh and funny xD I can’t believe you don’t see anime these days that have the same humor D:
I have to admit… towards the middle and end of Kare kano, a lot of new characters are quickly introduced and the focus turns away from Arima and Yukino D: The anime doesn’t spend a lot of time with these other characters, and if they have a flash back or inner thoughts it usually lasts like…one episode. Not enough for one person to interpret or understand :/ This is where the anime starts to decline. Not only that, but there are recaps every 2 or 5 episodes. But none the less, I still enjoyed it.
Animation
It’s hard for me to judge the animation… I mean, this anime was made waaay back in 1998 where anime was in low budget. The animation is defiantly creative in my opinion, even though at some points they’re scans from the manga, still scenery, or just still animation in general. But the character design looks a LOT better than other character designs made during that time *cough serial experiments lain… ah my goddess… etc…* the animation is not spectacular but it’s definatly not terrible. I would say it’s pretty, and bearable :P
Sound
Again, it’s bearable @_@; At times, the BGM kind of interferes with the moment and most of the BGM is very overused and repetitive. The opening and ending theme songs are kind of addictive, but they’re not the best op and eds ever. As for voice acting, I’m going to be honest. When it comes to Arima and Yukino, i prefer the english dub. When it comes to all the side characters, i prefer the Japanese dub. But Japanese dub vs English dub… I much rather prefer english dub. not because i’m too lazy to read subtitles, but because it’s easier to "get into" the episode when you listen and understand the emotion, instead of reading subtitles and a somewhat understanding of japanese emotion in language….
Characters
YES. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Not only does it exist, but it’s believable xD It’s just so… natural how much Yukino and Arima change while being in a relationship with each other. It’s also fun to watch how Arima and Yukino interact with other characters. All the characters in kare kano have their own background story that make you fall in love with them. I LOVE characters like Asaba who just brighten the mood with humor in a non crazy way xD Tho I have to admit that a few characters are there for a weak purpose, but for the most part, all the supporting characters have some kind of contributation to the story.
Enjoyment
I obviously loved Kare Kano, but I would only recommend it to people who LOVE love. If you love watching people fall in love, express their feelings of love, change because of love, go crazy because of love, then you MUST watch Kare Kano. I think the only people who wouldn’t enjoy Kare Kano are those who don’t really care about love, don’t know what’s it’s like to be in love, or have no heart -_-. However, stop around episode 10 or 11 because the anime begins to decline due to low budget x_o;; such a shame…

My notes & Opinion on this anime
[This portion is meant for people who don't want to read the whole review.]
If you're into high school comedy romance, Peach Girl should be on your "plan to watch" list. But this anime is one of those love it or hate it anime. You either REALLY love the drama that goes
...
on, the characters, and the conflicts. Or you seriously hate how unrealistic, annoying, and overly dramatic it can be.
This anime was EXTREMELY hard for me to score because there are times when I thought this anime was very poorly written, unrealistic, and had annoying characters. But other times, it completely turns around and I end up loving the anime! There are MANY elements in this anime that make it both strong, and weak. I predicted I'd hate this anime, but I ended up becoming addicted to Peach Girl. This isn't the most amazing anime I've seen, but it caught me and left me in tears. That's why I give this anime an 8
Story
The Good: There are a lot of love triangles going on in this anime. Momo x Touji, Toji x Sae, Momo x Kairi, Kairi x Misao, etc...
When the anime is focusing on Momo and the two guys she's chasing after, Touji and Kairi, this anime is very nicely done. I love how the author was able to illustate Momo and her feelings between these two guys, and how these guys feel for her.
The Bad: Ok... there are a LOT of points where the situations in this anime have been dragged out so much that it starts to become unrealistic. There are too many plot twists, and the anime tends to repeat the same story over and over. The author is trying to create these complicated situations that end up making no sense, and it's just over the top. Momo, the main character, keeps going back and forth between boys, to the point where you can't connect with the characters that well. The word "I love you" is VERY overused in this anime, along with kissing.
This is probably something that'd make watchers drop the anime after the first 10 or so episodes, but if you keep watching, the anime starts to get better. A little.
Art
I just want to say one thing to the animators: Just because it looked good in the manga, does NOT mean it'll look good in the anime. The art style of this anime was kind of hard to look at. Especially their lips, solid shading, etc... I have to admit that the original manga art is a lot nicer to look at. But the anime killed the art. I would have gotten into the anime more if the animation didn't look so choppy. The art in the anime is defiantly one of the weak points, but for me it was bearable.
Sound
The music is very recognizable for one thing. It's not bad but what i sort of hated was how the BGM used the same tracks over and over. i mean, they play the EXACT same song everytime the characters go to school, wake up, or take a walk. And then the SAME song always plays when a break up occurs. It gets quite repetitive.
The opening and ending theme song are nice. I also heard the english version of the OP and ED and thought it was much better than the japanese one. I don't think you can find it anywhere on the internet sadly...
Character
Ok. This is defiantly the author's strongest, and weakest point. There are some characters that I absolutly hate, and some that I absolutly love.
For example, Kashiwagi Sae: Momo's enemy. I'm sorry but, the way she thinks is so overly inhumane and b*tchy to the point where she tears apart the whole anime and makes it unrealistic. She tries to lie to Momo's boyfriend so she can have him all to herself, but her lies are not very well thought out and the other characters are too naive. Every time I see her, I feel like I hate the anime even more and more. I mean, there are characters that interfere with the main character but Sae is just... a female version of Makoto from School Days. But worse.
On the plus side, there's Okayasu Kairi. He's probably one of the most unique and lovable characters I have ever seen in anime. One of those characters you wish you could meet in real life because his personality is just so carefree, lively, and hilarious. He puts a smile on my face and turns the whole anime around! Kairi is defiantly one of those well built characters that makes you love Peach Girl more and more!
There are other characters who seem to be a bit... useless and unnecessary. The ones who are "important", but the anime could still be told with out them. From Jigoro to Morika, I found no real point of having them in the anime.
As for the main character, Momo, i honestly found nothing special about her, but she's not someone to hate. In a way, I don't see what it is about her personality that makes Kairi and Touji go head over heals for her, but the way the author illustrates it makes you able to connect with these characters.
Dub vs Original
If you ask me, I see no difference. The only thing that was kinda weird was transitioning voices. In the english dub, Momo sounds like a strong and loud character, but in Japanese she sounds really soft and shy. It kind of affect her personality and the way I thought about her. I like Kairi's voice in the English version more than the Japanese version.
Ending Statements
I did cry at many points in this anime, but I still thought it was OK. It's one of those anime that are addictive, but not exactly overly amazing. In a way, I feel like the author is sharing part of what happened in their life within this anime. I didn't end up hating this anime, but this should go on my top 30 anime list. Give this anime a try :D

My notes & Opinion on this anime
[This portion is meant for people who don't want to read the whole review.]
I was going to write this review when I finished the series, but honest to god, I don't think one episode is going to change my opinion about this anime.
...
If you're looking for a deep, love love, romantic, tear-jerker anime, then please cancel that batch download of School Days immediately and take this anime off your plan-to- watch list. You won't be impressed by School Days. It wasn't very well thought out, it seemed like the creators were trying a little too hard to make this a complex love story. Even if you're an ecchi, h-game fan you will find this anime to be pretty pathetic. That's all I have to say.
This anime is something I don't recommend, but it's all your choice whether you'd like to watch it or not.
Story
Ok. So I thought this would be just a regular cliche high school love story. It seemed a little immature of Makoto to fall in love with Kotonoha at first sight, but you know, that's how most relationships in anime start. Didn't impress me, I was hoping it'd get better. That's when Sekai came in and a little love-triangle started. I actually thought Sekai and Makoto would end up together in the first place, and some how live happily ever after. Think it'd stop there? Ahaha. I wish it did.
Then the anime just gets pretty irritating. I thought it'd stop at Sekai, but it doesn't. Setsuna kicks in and decides to have sex with him, kinda almost outta nowhere. I wouldn't let a guy violate me for the sake of my friend. Setsuna's interest in Makoto was hinted, but going so far as to sexual relationships is not what I was thinking. Think it'd stop there? Apparently not. Otome comes out of the blue and decides to go at it with Makoto. Think it ends there? Nope. He decides to have a little fun with Hikari as well. This is just high school people. Very unrealistic. Most anime is unrealistic, but come on people. It was a really poor attempt at some kind of sex in the city anime, but worse. In the end, you just find all the characters really annoying, even the ones you liked from the beginning.
Art
Actually, the reason I decided to watch this anime was purely the art style. I had some pictures from the game back in 2005 and thought it looked so pretty. 2 years later, I find the anime and thought it'd be nice to watch because of the art style. I think the only good part of this anime is that you'll want to go out and save pictures and scans from this anime because the style is so pretty. But I think it's another one of those Anime where they put so much detail into the girls, and the guy doesn't look the least bit attractive.
Character
Aah. Where do I start with the characters? I think the good points. The creators did a good job as far as characters and their reactions. All the characters reacted to such situations as any other human would, so that's a plus. It wasn't too over done where you see the characters wanting to commit suicide, and it wasn't too little of emotions shown.
The bad part is that you think all the characters are idiots.
For the most part, it seems that all the characters fall in love with each other at first sight. Even with Sekai. She knew how much of an idiot Makoto is, the way he treated Kotonoha, yet she still is blinded by love and wants to be with him. Some how, I just don't get that. It makes her look dumb when she loses her innocence to him, and that's not what an audience wants to see.
You also find Kotonoha to be annoying because she's trying a little to hard to be with Makoto. She's pretty damn persistent.
And oh. my. god. Makoto. I don't know. Doesn't he have ANY sense of moral values what-so-ever? I mean, I love dense characters in most anime, but this guy is just terrible. Absolutly terrible. He disregards all feelings of other girls and just wants some. Reading a book for girl advice? Come on. Asking another girl for girl advice? Now that's going too far. Dumping your girlfriend to go for the girl who gives you the girl advice? I don't even know where to begin with how idiotic that is. Most guys in high school are a bit more mature than that.
The other characters... I feel like they're just there for the sake of being there. Even though Setsuna claims to have a close relationship with Sekai, you just don't see it. Even though Otome claims to have liked Makoto back in the day, you just don't see it. And I don't know about Hikari, but it was kind of all just out of the blue for me...
Ending Statements
I obviously did not enjoy this anime. But hey, there's only one episode left and I never have to see anything from this anime again. Hey. This anime is ok if you honest to god have NOTHING else to do and no other anime to watch, but believe me, you won't really get much from this anime. Nothing deep, but a little TOO serious for something in high school. None of the relationships, nor the characters, have realistic feelings, especially on Makoto. This anime is something I don't recommend, but it's your choice whether you'd like to watch it or not.

...
Oh man! I've been wanting to write a review for Kodocha for a while now ~ I was planning to wait until I finished the series, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF HARUHI, I MUST WRITE A REVIEW
So ya XD I think Kodocha is spectacular. It's amazing and just blows me away. It's one of those animes that make me go crazy that I'm smashing my computer with a big smile on my face because it's SUCH a good anime I can't handle it and go insane. What else can I say? I first stumbled onto this anime while flipping channels but just thought it was annoying, kiddy, and pointless. But I decided to take the time to stap myself to the couch and watch the anime from the top, and I am SO glad that I did. One of the best choices of my life XD
The thing that makes Kodocha SO good is, mainly, how perfectly the characters and their personalities are done. Unless you haven't seen the anime, you might know what I mean. With these perfect personalities, the author can easily put the characters together into a masterpiece, despite how simple the storyline is.
This anime has the PERFECT amount of drama. It's not too serious and deep, BUT it's not dumb and cliche what-so-ever. In fact, the romance in this anime is thought out so amazingly well.
Story
Um o_o Ok where to start... More like... how do I put this o_O;;? Kodocha, to me, doesn't have a REAL storyline or plot. To be blunt, it's just a Shoujo anime that revolves around the daily life of Sana Kurata... you know what I mean o_o? The anime starts doesn't totally shout out there and say "THIS IS A ROMANCE ANIME" like most do. That's why you don't really expect much at first. It seems like an episodic anime of Sana's daily life, which it kinda pretty much is. Sana is a 6th grader TV star so you don't expect any serious love drama.
... and THAT'S where this anime catches you off guard.
The romance in this anime is done so perfectly, I am having an EXTREMELY hard time finding the best way to express it xD You NEED to watch it to see what I mean ~
Art
You look at the art and immediately know this anime was made before 2000. I can't say much about the art. Normally I'd go on and on about how perfectly characters are drawn in perspective to their personalities, but in this case, it's kinda just "mmk". I wasn't blown away by the art, nor was I irritated by it. The style is actually kinda pretty, I probably would have thought it was gorgeous and beautiful if I watched it back in 1995 when it was made @_@ So yeah... the art isn't much to talk about.
BUT animation is VERY well done. I must say, the reactions and jokes are old-style, but because of that, it's hilarious for the fact that I've never seen them before. Recent jokes are so re-used and that's why it doesn't impress me much in recent anime, but since this is old and I so RARELY watch old anime, the jokes seem fresh and new to me XD They say such silly jokes that are SO old style, BUT FOR SOME REASON IT'S FUNNY.
"that squirrel on your head. does it poop all over it? cuz i'm starting to think you're head's full of crap."
..ya XD
the babbit is great. spitting soda out of the nose is also great. the smacking is hilarious, and so is the hammer smacking. I can't say anything more than that XD
Sound
Sound is actually really good for something 1995 o_o i'm surprised the opening theme song isn't so old style lke yu yu hakusho's xD The cool part of this anime is that they re-use background music so much, that when you hear it somewhere else, you IMMEDIATELY know it's kodocha. Someone could hum the melody and I'll breakout and ask "IS THAT SUM KODOCHA?"
I love it when that happens XD
Characters
Like I mentioned earlier... the characters are perfectly done o___o
First off, I can't help but mention that I'm blown away by how the age set is perfect. They're not so young that it annoys me, like in Naruto how it's WAY too serious a storyline with 12 year old characters @_@ BUT they're still old enough to learn more, and slowly crawl out of their fantasies. If this was set in high school, the whole story would be thrown off. You'd think of the character's SO differently o_O;;;
Sana Kurata is a perfect example. She is, in fact, pretty annoying because of how dense she is, but in a way, you can actually accept that o_o; And the main reason for the acceptance of Sana is cuz she's just freakin hilarious. She just is. But her age set is perfect because when it comes to stuff like, the way she believes in loving someone with almost a 10 year age difference, you can see all the flaws but still understand why Sana believes she's in love. If she was in high school, you'd think that it's plain dumb for a teen to be in love with some 30 year old. Sana can get away with a lot of stuff due to her age. Hopefully I'm making sense here o__o;;
The character I am MOST impressed by is Akito Hayama. He's so well done and developed so perfectly, it almost scares me how the author can come up with such a character o_o
See... Akito is one of those quiet, reserved characters and so damn mature for his age. I like how he's laid back but it doesn't annoy me. Because I usually think those kind of characters are cliche and annoying because they're EVERYWHERE, but there's something about Akito that doesn't make him so cliche. He's a wreckless trouble maker, but from most trouble makers, you'd expect them to be loud and obnoxious, but Akito isn't. I think that's the thing that makes him unique, really cool and ACTUALLY likeable o__o; With his personality, you can do a hell lot with him which makes him one of the best, flexiable characters you can think of in a story. I especially love his development throughout the anime. It's amazing how much an impact Sana put into his life. AND THAT WAS ALSO SO PERFECTLY DONE. The way the author shows Akito's family life, how you can tell he's going to fall for Sana but when it happens you're ACTUALLY surprised by it XD It's just perfect.
I also love Sana's mom. She is the most awesome mom I have ever seen in any anime. BUT THAT'S WHAT'S SO WEIRD. In most anime, the mom doesn't play much of a role at all unless it's like a "ZOMG YOU'RE MY MOM???" situation. But Sana's mom cracks me up. It's just funny how she is a genius at relationships and plays such a good role. I dunno XD Unless you haven't seen the anime, you should know what I mean XD
Naozumi is great too. His trumpet. Oh lawd XD
There are other characters I know but I don't really feel like going into depth about, such as Rei and Tsuyoshi. Some of the characters are exist just for the heck of it. And the thing that kinda sucks is that you can find some characters to be useless and annoying. But as long as you focus on the main characters, you'll think they're very well done, VERY well developed and freakin hilarious XD.
Dub vs Original
The dub is better.
Mainly because Sana's voice actor is AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. I've never seen such a good voice actor in my life o_O Akito's voice actor is a lot better in English than Japanese. I didn't like the Japanese version so much when I decided to switch languages... it sucks how the dub only goes up to 35 :/ You'll still like it either way XD
Ending Statements
I obviously enjoy this anime. Don't need to make a big paragraph on that XD I HIGHLY recommend this to girls. Guys, I'm not so sure o_o; But I guarantee you, you'll like this anime. This anime has the PERFECT amount of drama. It's not too serious and deep, BUT it's not dumb and cliche what-so-ever. In fact, it's extremely very well thought out. This kind of amount is perfect for me. So... watch Kodocha XD
...thank you for taking the time to read this o_o;
