Well. I was enjoying this story. Keyword: was.
It had so many great elements to start with, so let’s list those first:
-Great Animation
-Post apocalyptic world
-Weird orphanage with gifted children
-Terrifying man eating monsters
-Horror upon horror
-Intriguing characters (aka badass female lead with a laser gun)
-Mysterious plot
...
To name a few!
And then episode 3 happened.
Turns out from a pair of siblings, the brother ends up inhabiting his older sister’s body after a tragic event. The concept of a gender-bent character in this context is actually quite gruesome and devastating. It would blur the lines of perceived gender, you’d be a constant reminder of who you have lost. Over time it could break your psyche; your sense of self.
EXCEPT!
WAIT FOR IT!
The brother has… let’s just say a particularly TABOO disposition for his sister.
Yeah.
It’s joked about by side characters that he’s a “sis-con”. As if having feelings for your sibling isn’t revolting enough, he decides to MASTURBATE using his sister’s body after he believes she’s dead, because he wants to “touch the body he loves” (and they actually animated it!). He admires his sister’s body in episode 1 and tries to kiss himself using a mirror.
It’s just vile. And not in a “oh this is a morbid plot point” kind of way, because the plot would still be perfectly morbid without this addition. And it’s treated as if it’s normal?? Hey fun fact, I want to have sex with my sister! I masturbate with her body because she’s so hot!
The other main character doesn’t even remark on him explaining his backstory except basically “still can’t believe you’re actually a dude inside bc I still wanna smash”.
Just, jesus. Why is incest in so much anime and why is it depicted as a norm. Needless to say, this turned what once was a cool female(?) lead into just a perverted incestuous character. I don’t even care if there’s some later twist saying they aren’t blood related, still disgusting thanks.
I’m disappointed because I was liking it, but I can’t imagine it getting much better with the direction it’s going in so it’s a drop for me. Let this review be a warning to those who also draw the line at this kind of thing! This is my opinion, but each to their own.
