You know when a mediocre video game gets made into a bad anime adaptation? That's the best way to describe Ars no Kyojuu.

Everything from the characters, setting, plot and bad guys just screams "bad anime adaptation of a video game" and yet... it isn't, from everything I can tell it's an original series that just FEELS like a bad adaptation of a video game in every way possible.

The story makes little to no sense most of the time and the world building wants to be expansive but ends up minimal at best, as if there's supposed to be a source material out there filling ... in a lot of the gaps. The plot plods along from one themed village to the next fighting boss monsters along the way. The original bad guy just gets swept away without much of an actual fight in order to progress to the next part of the plot after which they just exposition dump the real story and then cap everything off with a deus ex machina and a cliffhanger for a second season which I hope to god never comes.

Would I play the JRPG this anime wants to be based on? Maybe. Would I watch this series again? God no.

Looking for a good ecchi fantasy series? Then maybe look somewhere else, because there are plenty of good shows out there that do better with both without being just so horribly dull as this show.

The art and voice talent aren't bad it's just that the story so far is just so horribly stupid and boring.

The MC is a whiny pushover who is both the strongest/smartest in his class but still the underdog because of the one class he was failing. The titular heroine passes herself off as a human and not a single person at the school questions how she's able to ... supply the MC with super magic or tank massive magical fireballs. The tsundere friend is a tsundere friend, she exists to be tsunbdere and be the MC's friend.

The stupidest thing I can't get out of my head though is the virgin killer sweater the demon wears. You'd think that she's some sort of sultry succubus or something right and she made the outfit with her magic or something? No. That would make sense. Instead the MC ACCIDENTALLY packed his sisters outfit in with his belongings when he went to school (and I guess a pair of her shoes as well?) and he tells her to put it on so she'd have something to wear. You'd think it would be easy enough after that point to get her a new outfit right? It would just make sense for the schools faculty to give her some clothes or even a school uniform to wear so they didn't have a grown ass woman walking around dressed like that in their school? Nope, because the ecchi demands she be wearing a virgin killer all the time so she just does.

An interesting concept for a series that ended up almost entirely squandered.

The entire series so far can be described by the old saying "a mile wide but an inch deep". The majority of each episode is dedicated to introducing a new team of almost entirely two dimensional side characters and then pushing them aside for the next team, and then the next, and then the next and then the next.

Maybe the manga is ongoing enough for all of these character introductions to pay off in the end but for an anime series it just ends up making it feel more like a cheap gacha ... game project where they're trying to cram in as many cute girls as possible.

If you like cute anime ninja girls doing cute anime girl ninja things then look no further because that is almost all this series has and it has it in spades.
