Man what a wasted premise. Everything about it sound ambitious and interesting, when I tell people what the series is about, they get intrigued. But the execution is of the worst kind. Really boring.
People like to talk about the themes, the ideas this show has but when everything is constantly spilled out to you in never-ending infodumps I don't think it's a great think piece. I don't get anything on an emotional level, I only see how the author always goes 'and then this happens, and it's because you know... SOCIETY'. Wow what a great thought.
The characters are boring. The series makes you think there
...
will be 5 main characters but that's a big lie, there's barely one. Saki is just a pawn for the plot, I don't know anything about her, she just reacts to things that happen to her, she's a blank slate. I don't care about her and her relationship with others. She loved Shun her whole life? Wow I was so invested. She dated Maria? Well at least they had some screentime together and a bit of chemistry. But you know, everything queer about Shinsekai Yori is purely superficial, no matter how much better Maria is as a love interest, Saki is written to be so straight it's laughable. Shun and Satoru dated? Satoru even cared about it? Wow both boys are so straight and down bad for our main girl, it's insulting. I should care about children who die, who is afraid of being erased, but I don't care.
The children are the most interesting part of the series. But the majority of the screentime doesn't belong to them. It belongs to prolong infodumps and the war with the rats. Oh these damn rats. From the start I couldn't understand, why oh why so much time is dedicated to them, why is the plot revolving around their opression, it's like from a completely different anime. In the end, it was all about the final reveal, but like did it change anything? Like the rats were shown to be sentient beings with intellect, seing them treated as slaves was uncomfortable to say the least from the very start. But guys, it's especially horrible because you know THEY ARE ACTUALLY HUMAN OH MY GOD THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING. No, no it doesn't, well, it changes something. It's supposed to justify the last boring arc, it's a story about opression and revolution guys. So cool, so wise, slavery is bad btw. Ok it's interesting to see the main guys being so obviously wrong till the very end and you may say well, the audience feels the same way. We look at the rats and think they are inferior because of their appearance. They made them look subhuman to easily kill. BUT THAT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STORY! It's not a great plot twist, it's just a sucker punch. Society sucks, totalitarism is bad, humans are so rotten. I don't care, if I don't care about the characters I don't care about the story, the world, the plot, the way it's revealed. In the end our strongest feelings are with the rats, I forgot about the kids. So what, some kids died, I have no emotions about it. Everything is so great because SAKI IS FINALLY IN A STRAIGHT MARRIAGE AND PREGNANT, OH BOY THE SOCIETY IS FINALLY HEALING (so long Maria, you and Saki truly couldn't have kids).
May be it's interesting for someone who just likes to see the story unfold. Like man I need to watch till the end to know all the secrects, to have them spilled out to me. But the process is not enjoyable, I would rather read the synopsis and be like wow that sounds interesting.
'sounds' interesting.
