The main thing that drove me to write this review was the insanely low score this has been getting but personally, I found that its best aspects are the same ones that people somehow dislike. (Light spoilers incoming) Yes all of the characters have something negative or something unlikable that they carry into the series but I do think that's the point. From the name itself, the idea has been to put criminals and the most wicked into a very dire situation and this is why I like that the characters are unlikable and ruthless. Yes its exaggerated at various points and intervals, to the
...
point where its comical but you can't reasonably expect all the characters to be like those in a shonen or romance/shoujo/josei manga where all the MC are perfect and you just have about 100 chapters of circling around the plot instead of developing it. I mean this is psychological horror, after all. I think Dokumushi is creative and beautiful in a really wicked way.
The reason why it's scored the way it is, is because although I believe that this series is underrated, I won't deny that it lacks in various aspects. Again, the evil in some characters are vastly exaggerated and some don't make sense but, hey, this is a fiction. And, regardless of the romanticized wickedness and gore, it all ties in and makes sense. The pacing is also really nice but the developments are a bit scuffed, it feels like they only introduce character context and background when it's convenient while ignoring it the rest of the time. I also find it a bit cliche for a psychological horror. As other reviews already mention, this is not for the faint of heart and those who've had terrible and traumatic experiences but for those willing to barrel through those anyway, it really picks up at about chapter 20 onwards and I think at this point, you'll start forgetting the gore and focus more on the plot.

It does what any romance anime/show would do regardless and it does it really well by always making the viewer feel the romantic awkwardness feeling while the characters are interacting which makes sense based on the characters' personalities. I find the main characters likeable and relatable as well considering that they are in their thirties and late-twenties which is pretty unnatural for most romance/comedy anime these days.
At the end of the day however, these are everything that the show does right and most of the other aspects that I would care about while watching anime are downright bad. First, out of all the anime I
...
enjoyed watching, MMO Junkie probably has the worst plotline and development I've ever seen. The premise is great and the characters are likeable but their trajectories and decision-making make absolutely no sense and things keep happening and you just get caught asking 'why would that ever happen?' Personally I don't find the, "red string constantly tugging" trope entertaining anymore if it happens more than once or twice. For example with some slight spoiler: The MCs keep randomly meet at multiple vary crucial points that made absolutely no sense. To top off the plot, they also kept doing actions that are completely uncharacteristic and make no sense. Second, the anime tackles some issues (which is great) but made no clear progression towards that part and sort of just throws it on your hands like hot potato. Lastly, I think a huge flaw is giving way too much screen time on the MMO itself. At the end of the day, this is not an isekai, it's a romance anime with NEETs/Otaku as the main characters. By using a lot of the screen time on stuff like combat and in-game conversations, it becomes difficult to care what's happening onscreen since most of it won't matter after the episode ends. In later parts, it does do this but it does make it somewhat boring in the earlier parts. Also, just an honorable mention but the guy playing a girl and girl playing a guy during the MMO sequences also get very confusing especially since they have different voice actors.
All in all, it does what needs to be done for a rom/com but you shouldn't expect more. The plot and progression aren't great but I do think the points A and B are great, it just doesn't develop characters and people the way it should.

Considering the length of its releases and the slow, episodic pace, it is very difficult to get into as the characters generally have zero development for the first 30-40 chapters. Even after some development, the next ones still take as long as the previous. For the first half of Akutsu-san, it mostly focuses on romantic subtexts and ero but as I mentioned earlier there will be some development and character changes and I find that the low character-count really compliments well with this. The second half, I'd say, focuses more on the romantic aspect with less subtexts and more actual romantic tropes. I'm also a
...
big fan of the Sadodere to Tsundere transition that the FMC goes through.
The negatives for me are the artstyle and the insanely slow pacing. Each chapter is about five pages long so it is to be expected and the artstyle is, without sugarcoating, not the best. If these are stuff that turns you off, this might not be one for you but as one who suffered through its bad parts, I can safely say it was worth it. It's still slow even on the later stages but slow character developments are still better than none.

I honestly can't find a single reason to dislike this anime other than perhaps not being someone's preferred genre. Personally, this was not the type of genre I would commonly watch and if it weren't for its mainstream popularity, I probably would have never brought myself to watch this but I'm glad I did. The forte I think is the artstyle and the character designs and aesthetics. The animators created every single possible detail they can and to me there is no such thing as "background images" in this. Everything is beautiful in its own way and I've never seen an anime do it this
...
well. The comedy and cute are well written, colliding almost effortlessly with everything complementing each other well. One never outshines the other. And lastly, perhaps this is more personal than a general review but the main character is relatable as hell. In fact, the one thing I can't relate to with Bocchi is her talent. ^.^
Strangely enough, the weakest point for me was the music. It's not bad at all, don't get me wrong but none of the songs I would ever really consider to download and listen to outside of watching the anime. Kinda weird considering its a show about a band but again, nothing about it is bad, just some stuff are worse than others. With something like K-ON, the music from OP to ED and all the in-plot songs were amazing. Same thing with non-music related shows.
Overall still a 10 for me. Everything about Bocchi the Rock is just simply beautiful and artistic even for those with no interest to music. Can be inspirational to those looking for inspirational and can be chill for those who just want some light-hearted comedy.

Generally a 'feel good' anime. I can get how some might find it boring or pointless even though I, personally, find that it has other flaws other than it's purpose which I didn't mind at all. I did take into account that my age(22) might influence how I feel about it, which is a big factor since this is middle school romance. First off, the plot itself was pretty decent and did have its high's and low's and each episode of the season lead logically into each other but where it falls off to me is the relationships and development. The MC's, understandably, have a
...
weird connection in that they somehow have this 'feeling' between them that leads them to start a relationship; which is fine, the awkwardness of the main characters is the point of the story but the flaw is that this happens with every character. The relationship between Hira and Mizuno is probably the best developed one in the entire series even though Hira is the 'antagonist' if you can call him that. An example of this is Nishio and Azumi. One episode they just met, the next Nishio is already crying over the unevitable relationship between Mizuno and Azumi. I also find the interactions a bit awkward and cringe but that is the point so I don't mind it too much and again, my age range isn't really the demographic. This is why I mostly let the naivety and passiveness pass even though it frustrates me to no end. Essentially every action a character does just leaves me with "Okay, but why would he do that?"
Ultimately (and TL;DR), it does what it was meant to do, which is make you feel nice and generally uplift the audience but I also feel like the plot could've been a lot better and the characters better developed. I feel like one that does something similar and does it better is 'Tonikaku Kawaii'.
