Anything beyond this is a general review of Railgun.
...
"When magic and science collide, the story begins" or soemthing
this statement cannot be anymore false in terms of anime only. While yes, Aleister technically made science out of magic but that isn't important to a anime only like me.
Railgun is one of those series that are so highly regarded by its fanbase. This fanbase is not very loud though, not many people even knows this show exists, maybe except for Misaka fanart being tossed around everywhere. And yeah best girl polls often feature Misaka on the top placements but Railgun the series itself is not so popular.
This show has such interesting power system regarding the science side, it should be one of the greawtest in anime. Just taking accelerator, there isn't really an ability stronger than his without moving into the magical side of things where, oh I can dictate the universe haha look at my powers mummy. His ability of vector control is just fascinating and peak anime powers. With this power he can somewhat control the rotation of earth, deflect any harmful vectors such as UV rays, and he can even use undiscovered dark matter which is questionable.
However, Railgun's strongest suit is not combat, rather it is the slice of life stories of the girls and academy city. Whatever happens within academy city and beyond most often dictate the plot. Just The quartet of Kuroko, Misaka, Uiharu, Saten is such a blessing to watch.

"Demon Slayer is carried by Ufotable".
This statement cannot be any more true to me and for many others.
Tanjiro is just a sympathetic, gotta get shit done tho kinda protag, Inosuke is just the wildcard, and Zenitsu might as well have yearly collabs with Pampers and Huggies because that's his demographic and it would sell like hot cakes.
I care about the world and lore of DS as much as Nisekoi's.
When the show is building tension and dialogues happen, I like to close my eyes and sleep as long as I can. That's why I only watch this show when it is almost done
...
every season so far.
While literally everything about the show that should make it good is so offensively boring, the fight scenes are just pure bliss. You let yourself be immersed by the animation and sound and it's just so beautiful. This is what Ufotable has been working towards all these years of making great and underwhelming Fate franchise series.
When the fight takes place and you just spectate, the simple narratives of the show can really be emotional. The most bare minimum, basic societal emotion baits can make me cry such as sibling bonds (not tanjro and nezuko, their bond is purely for plot reasons. "wake up, your other sibling needs you... youre not done yet right? i know youre not! the other one that's not unconcsious really needs you right now! hax on!) please stop using this.
But yeah, also it's nice to have many of my favorite VAs having even minor roles. Especially those who do not get roles in seasonal anime that are actually good. I miss them so much and this is the closest I get to hear their voices that season.

This is not a real review
Ok, no doubt, the story is unlike any other isekai anime. Just the lore of Lugunica and the re:zero world is unparalelled. Many of the greatest shows have stories that are nothing less than simply fascinating; the characters are quirky and so distinct, it becomes iconic as soon as you are introduced to them. (Steins;Gate, Kaguya-sama, Koe no Katachi, etc) While this is important, the best are not solely plot based, rather they are world based. The world and its lore dictates the story characters are placed. (Berserk, Code Geass, AOT, etc) Re:Zero is one of these stories that are
...
so heavily driven by the world itself. Tappei has constructed a world like no other isekai; Witch Cult, Sin Authorities, the various kingdoms, the heroes (Dragon, Sword Saint, Sage), the Witches, the entire magic system, spirits, etc. It is a world with its own deep lore and complications. The biggest complaints about season 1 was always ' there's no clear plot'. This is only due to their dumbasses not being able to follow the story properly and simply clap when Rem either became a deredere (kinda) or when she gave her greatest speech. who's Rem? To address the 'no clear plot' issue, it would only be natural to recap it. Subaru believes that he was sent to another world as some hero with supernatural abilities, that he has the power to save the world and get the babes. Instead he's killed by the thugs and Elsa repeatedly. Still his heroism never really dies out and instead gives up his Pride to ask for help. To this point it is half world and character based motives; Emilia is the first person he really meets/interacts with in this world that stabs him over and again. She's shown him so much care thorughout his loops that he lets his behaviors reflect the Subaru that has known Emilia for more than she knows she has. Couple this first exposure of kindness and familiarity with the fact that her most important asset; the insignia has been stolen gives his baseless heroic ideals of being a shut in otaku who has consumed many trashy fantasy hero types to give him the motivation to help Emilia at all costs. After that, he's no longer in a street where he has to worry about stabbing, instead living in the mansion with his favorite person in this entire world. The idea of losing everything he's gained by Rem is devastating, prompting him to find the best route where there are no real conflicts, while having to deal with the mabeast issue on top of that. If he gave up and left, he would be back to zero, having gained absolutely nothing from the many loops of stomach openings and stabbings. His triumph would be no more. After he successfully deals with every single issue he had, including the villagers, he is so over his head that he stops listening to Emilia's concerns and wishes, ultimately making a fool out of himself at the capital. He's told not to interupt her during the gathering. He starts by becoming jealous of Julius, a top knight of the kingdom showing humility and knightly behavior to one of the five candidates of the future ruler. Then he proceeds to accompany Priscilla into the gathering, disrupt the speakers when they show racism towards Emilia and declare himself as her knight which offends everyone present. Now the other part of this is 'the white whale is so boring, whats the motive?'. When Subaru gets back from the capital, he has either two routes he will face; the white whale encounter, which will almost always take Rem, or if they survive, encounter the With Cultists. The cultists will have already attacked the mansion, killing Emilia and Ram. Even when Rem went ahead of him, she died at the mansion to them. The death of Emilia triggers Puck's contract condition of the apocalypse in raging blizzard set to freeze the entire world until the Reinhardt saves the world. Escaping the white whale and the witch cult/Betelguese still leads to doom for Subaru. He loses everything and the apocalypse does not even matter when it does happen. This is the reason that makes Subaru to form alliances with Ricardo, Hoshin faction, and the Crusch factions. Eventually the slaying of the white whale and Betelguese.
Only real complaint was the mansion arc; it seemed to go on for too long and every loop was pretty tedious at the time.
Highlights: ep15 where Subaru stands in front of Puck's apocalypse form and gets decapitated. That repetition of hopelessness and sound track hit way too hard. Rem's speech with her dedicated song by Minori Inase. And... "who is rem?"

As a 10/10, I feel like I have to write a review so this is my first review..
Story: There is nothing special about the story. It's just one revolving around a girl placed in an unfortunate situation with a very loving family. The story follows Nagomu and Itsuka. One of my biggest pet peeves of shows that I genuienly enjoy is common anime plot points. (high school romance misunderstanding, forced beach/swimsuit episodes, star crossed lovers, etc) This show does not fall for this for the most part as most things that happen to the characters are very grounded in our own world. Everything that happens
...
has buildup and resolves that all make sense given the context. While there is nothing new being done here, every week watching it, the story does its part in making sure all the other elements of the show can really shine.
Art: My god, have you paid attention to the backgrounds? Nearly all the backgrounds have a pastel like fading style (not an artist) that is too reminiscent of colored (story) books I used to read as a child. Maybe its more of an Asian thing but I still have so many childrens books that have that style and this style gives that much more character to the show. Being drawn so simply, it can still look so good because its goal is not to look detailed and squeaky clean, rather give a warm fuzzy/cozy feeling. This applies also to the floors. A big oversight by many anime studios tend to be the foot walking on the floor. If you observe characters walking with their feets visible, many have them shifting their steps as some kind of 4 dimensional treadmill. The style of the background allows the characters to show a first person perspective often without any immersion being broken. As for the character designs, they only really do the job, and kind of like the background, has a style that allows animators to consistently draw faces and such in a natural way.
Sound: The sound designs such as various samples of wagashi making processes and such do their role just fine. The main string sound track that plays every episode never gets tiring as it is a simple tune and doesn't get used overtime, though it is always used every week. They could have had some more variety in that regard but the track already does it job well in every scene it plays so there is no real complaint to be made.
Characters: 7/10 its quite ok. How they act and interact in non-anime ways is by far the best parts about the story and characters. They all feel very much real. The most 'anime' kind of characters may be the store owner dad and Itsuka. However, the dad seems to act in a more animated way because he doesn't really know how to treat his beloved son that has left the store for a decade just to come back for his sake. Itsuka, I hearad quite a few people online complain about her behaviors. First, Itsuka is a child. She was abandoned by her mother first, when they all presumably lived together and her always being busy with work, breaking promises to the young Itsuka. This kind of behavior especially from a mother figure may either set an example or a reserve in Itsuka's person to either act the same way, or place a distrust to adults. Next, she was abandoned by her father, though I highly doubt her memories of 'children are useless and hold you back' mentality of her father is most likely inaccurate, she was still left there without warning. No matter his intent, he had left her just like that. It is a miracle she has become quite bright and the only thing about her father she brings up in her life is checking up in Kyoto station every so often. Now for the complaints. Most complaints I've heeard about Itsuka has to do with her mother. Her mother wants to bring her to France to live with her, where she works. Of course, she doesn't do that and stays at the store in Kyoto. This makes her 'selfish'. This is just dogshit. A child in middle school, who was left by both her parents, has friend groups, quite happily attends school, is already in apprenticeship, a prospect of a career she is very personally fond of, all in a loving family type environment in her native country shouldn't leave all that behind her if she decides not to. Demanding her to abandon all this, move to a foreign country, having to learn a completely different language, culture, and way of life in general is asking too much. While something great could bloom out of it, she will be living with a parent who priorities work over anything, grandparents she's never met, all while struggling in a new country. This could hardly be called selfish give all this context. As for Nagomu, don't call him cringe, he's in his late 20s and he's still that happy and childish. Try being like him at that age, you'll be envious, not cringing.
While no specific aspect of this show may earn a 10/10 for me, it's the combination of everything that makes this show up that allows me to enjoy and fully immerse in these charaters everyday lives every week I tune in. When I'm watching this show, the only way I can describe my feeling is the equivalent of the characters in this show enjoying the wagashi, just pure bliss of gentle sweetness and smoothness that is more than just healing for me.
