WARNING: This review may contain spoilers
The second season of Mermaid Melody is one of those shows where when its good, its REALLY good, but when its bad, its terrible.
Story - Continuing right where we left of in the first season, Kaito goes to Hawaii to discover himself and learn surfing. However, there he's attacked and loses his memories. He's rescued by a girl named Mikaru Amagi, who immediately falls head over heels for him. She and her brother Rihito take him in. Meanwhile the mermaid princesses have a new enemy, Mikeru, an angel like being who wants to absorb them into himself to become
...
more powerful. Also Seira, who is Sara's successor, is about to be born. But Mikeru absorbs her into him and now Lucia and co must collect her heart shards back. Also we have love interests for Hanon and Rina, named Nagisa Shirai and Masahiro Hamasaki.
Kaito losing his memories was just so painful. After spending 52 episodes in the last season just waiting for him to figure out Lucia's identity, here he loses his memories and we have to wait AGAIN for him to regain his memories. And on top of that, we have a love triangle between him, Mikaru, and Lucia. And it wouldn't have been so bad if Mikaru wasn't such an annoying character (more on her later). 6/10
Art - The art was decent I think. Its improved from the last season. 8/10
Sound - We have a bunch of new songs in this season and they're all really good. The 6 mermaid version of Legend of the Mermaid we got to hear this season was just amazing. Also all the villain songs are good. 7/10
Character - The main trio got quite a bit of character development. Lucia is more mature than she was in the last season and doesn't depend so much on Kaito anymore. Hanon learnt to get over her feelings for Tarou and now has a new love interest who's age appropriate. She's also less selfish in this season. Rina comes out of her shell more thanks to Masahiro and is more honest with her feelings.
Karen, Noel, and Coco return as a trio this season and they're such a delight to watch. Their endeavors in helping the main girls with their love are hilarious. I wish they would've gotten more spotlight in this season.
Seira is also nice. Her song "Beautiful Wish" is my favourite in the whole show. I do wish we got to see more of her when her heart shards were fully restored.
The two new love interests, Nagisa and Masahiro are decent. Nagisa is a bit immature and gets jealous easily, but he's 12 so that's expected of him. And he does what he can to make Hanon happy. Masahiro is such a sweetheart and his relationship with Rina was my favourite thing in this season. It was just the right amount of angst and sweetness.
I've already ranted about the whole "Kaito losing his memories" bit above so moving on from there.
Rihito is decent. I like how he cares about Mikaru and offers a shoulder for Lucia to cry on.
Mikaru.... oh God Mikaru. See, I hate love triangles, but maybe the one here wouldn't be so bad if Mikaru wasn't so damn annoying. She's basically season 1 Lucia turned up to 11. She's clingy, overly dependent on Kaito, and wants to be with him basically 24/7. What really made me dislike her was her actions in episode 34. There she guilts Kaito into staying with her, acts ungrateful to her brother after he spent his whole life trying to make hers better, even going so far as to SLAP HIM, and ruined the food Kaito got for Lucia. I understand she's been sick her whole life and never had friends, but God damn that is no excuse for the way she acts. She even gets angry at Kaito when he tries to remember more of his past because she catches on that he's trying to remember Lucia as well. This season would be so much better if they toned town her clinginess.
As for the villains, Mikeru is decent butI feel he's kinda out of place in this show. If you were to tell me this angel like being is the villain in a show about mermaids, I wouldn't believe you. He is quite sympathetic though, especially towards the end. And I love his song.
The Black Beauty Sisters return and they're lovely as ever. I love their new song, but not as much as their old one.
Lady Bat is great, Lanhua is good and her song is my favourite of the villains though I wish her minions weren't making those stupid sounds in the middle of it, Alala is pretty funny. Fuku is annoying and I have an irrational hatred of him. I cannot take the fact that he's the true villain of this season seriously.
Characters get a 7/10
Enjoyment - Like I said, when this show is good, its really good. When its not focusing on Kaito losing his memories and Mikaru being overly clingy, this show can be great. 6/10
Overall - There are a couple of things I would change about this season to make it better. First, tone down Mikaru's clinginess and do away with the love triangle shit. Second, have Karen, Noel, and Coco around more. Third, give Noel and Coco character songs, and give Noel a duet with Rina. And fourth, make Mikeru a biblically accurate angel (okay that last one was a joke). 7/10

If I watched this when I was a kid, I definitely would've loved it. Rainbow mermaids are right up my alley. But even though I watched it as a teenager, and then rewatched it as an adult, I do think there's some enjoyment to be had in this anime despite how much of a mess it can be.
Story - Six years ago, Lucia Nanami, the mermaid princess of the North Pacific Ocean, met a boy named Kaito Domoto. She saved him after a tsunami struck the ship he was on and gave him her pearl. Now six years later, Lucia
...
goes to the human world to retrieve her pearl. There she gets reunited with Kaito and also meets two other mermaid princesses - Hanon Hosho, the mermaid princess of the South Atlantic Ocean, and Rina Toin, the mermaid princess of the North Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile the main villain of this show, Gaito, wants to capture the mermaid princesses and use their pearls to call Aqua Regina, the sea Goddess, and use her power to control the oceans. He's already captured two princesses, Noel and Coco. His minions, the Dark Lovers, would do anything to get him what he wants. Lucia, Hanon, and Rina can use their pearls to transform into idols and defeat the villains with their songs.
Also we have the romance between Lucia and Kaito. Lucia isn't allowed to tell Kaito she's a mermaid because if a mermaid confesses to a human, they turn into bubbles. But if the human realizes it on their own, then its okay. I know, pretty confusing.
The story is okay. The idea of mermaid princesses who defeat the villains with their songs was interesting. And later, we have the Black Beauty Sisters who have songs of their own that can hurt the mermaids. Though the whole thing about how "if mermaid touch water in their human forms they'll turn back into a mermaid" was inconsistent because we've seen the girls in rain multiple times and nothing happens to them. But in one episode Lucia is scared to go in the rain because she may turn into a mermaid?
Also the whole thing about Kaito having to realize Lucia is a mermaid was so dragged out. He realized it in episode 13, then forgot because he lost his memory due to losing his power.
But otherwise the story is decent. It gets a 7/10
Art - The art is pretty good. I love the backgrounds of the North Pacific Ocean kingdom. Though I wish we had seen the other kingdoms as well. 7/19
Sound - Since this show is all about singing mermaids, the sound should be good. All the songs were amazing. The only thing that prevents me from giving it a 10 is Karen's voice. I know its cliche to complain about her voice but it could get so.... high pitched when she's singing. 9/10
Character - Lucia was a decent protagonist. She's fun, energetic, cheerful, pretty standard magical girl protagonist stuff. Though her jealousy over Kaito did annoy me a bit, but thankfully that was called out in one episode and its not a problem in the second season.
Hanon was pretty fun and I've gotta say, I'm so glad with how they handled her crush on Tarou. Hanon has a one sided crush on him and while Tarou does care for her, he doesn't reciprocate her feelings (which he shouldn't because he's her TEACHER). And her crush did make her annoying at times but otherwise I liked her.
Rina is probably my facourite of the trio. The way she started off as an aloof girl but slowly developed and got out of her shell was lovely. Her obsession over plasma TVs was also funny.
Hippo was a standard magical girl mascot. He was funny at times. What really made me like him was his tragic romance with Yuuri. THEY DESERVED BETTER DAMMIT.
Nikora and Taki were also fun to watch.
Kaito was an okay love interest. As I mentioned before, I didn't like how long it took for him to figure out Lucia's identity. He literally realized it in episode 13, then forgot because he used his powers. And then remains oblivious for the rest of the anime. Even his SIX YEAR OLD COUSIN figured it out faster than he did. But when its done well, his relationship with Lucia is beautiful.
Now for the villains. I adored the Dark Lovers. They could be hilarious and the way they bicker a lot but ultimately care about each other as a family was wonderful. I really missed their presence in the second season.
The Black Beauty Sisters were a delight to watch and their songs were top tier. My only complaint is the weird incest thing going on between them.
Sara was great too. It was cool to see a mermaid princess who turned to the dark side. Her song is the best one of the first season.
Gaito was.... okay. He didn't do much in the season and relied on his minions and his tragic backstory was only revealed in the last episode.
Overall the characters were enjoyable. 7/19
Enjoyment - Aside from Kaito taking the entire show to figure out Lucia's identity, this show is pretty enjoyable. It could be a mess at times but the characters could be such a delight to watch. 7/10
Overall - This was my second magical girl anime after Sailor Moon, so it does hold a special place in my heart. Rewatching it as an adult, I can see a lot of flaws. But its still enjoyable enough to be one of my favourites. 7/10

WARNING: This review may contain spoilers
And now we are finally onto the last season of Sailor Moon.
Story - The first six episodes of this season is a filler arc that wraps up plot threads from the last season. The Senshi all go to high school, Chibiusa is ready to go to the future, but Nehelenia is freed from her mirror and sends shards of it to Earth. One of them lands in Mamoru's eye and over the days he's badly affected by it. The filler arc ends with Nehelenia being redeemed and given a second chance at her life. The real story starts from
...
episode 7. Mamoru goes to America for his university but shortly after he boards the flight he's killed by the new villain, Galaxia. Meanwhile an idol group called the Three Lights, consisting of Seiya, Yaten, and Taiki, transfers to Juban High School. At the same time, a new group of villains appear and so do a new group of Senshi called the Sailor Starlights. The story is decent and a good way to wrap up this anime. 7/10
Art - Sailor Moon's art is always beautiful so this automatically gets a 10/10
Sound - They changed the opening for this one. While I missed Moonlight Densetsu, I really liked the new opening. The sound is also good. 8/10
Characters - Three new characters are introduced. Seiya who's Sailor Star Fighter, Yaten who's Sailor Star Healer, and Taiki who's Sailor Star Maker. I did not like these characters. They were okay when they didn't know the identities of the Senshi. But once they found out they could be unnecessarily mean, even going so far as to BLAME USAGI FOR SEIYA GETTING INJURED. They get some character development and then in the next episode, they're back to being their mean selves. They don't fully change until the last few episodes. As for Seiya and Usagi's romance, I'm not a fan of that either. No matter how many times Usagi told Seiya she wasn't interested, they kept pursuing her. Even leading up to that "Am I not good enough" scene.
The Outers return in this season. And I have to rant about how dirty they were done. Saturn and Pluto didn't get enough spotlight, as for Uranus and Neptune, need I mention their "plan" to betray Satrun and Pluto and pretend to work for Galaxia only to turn on her?
As for the villains, Galaxia was a terrifying villain. She could kill the Senshi with such ease and she won't hesitate in killing her minions if they fail her too many times. Also her uncorrupted form is just beautiful.
The Sailor Animamates were fun to watch. 6/10
Enjoyment - Despite its flaws I gotta say I enjoyed this season. There was the whole atmosphere of it being the last season of this anime. And the final episodes were so intense. 7/10
Overall - It was a pretty good way to end this classic anime. 6/10

After the comparatively darker season that was Sailor Moon S, this time we get a more lighthearted season.
Story - The story this time focuses more on Chibiusa. After a solar eclipse, a circus lands in Juban area. This is the Dead Moon Circus and they're looking for Pegasus, who is hiding in someone's dream. Meanwhile Chibiusa dreams of a Pegasus who tells her to save him. The story is pretty cute and all, but my gosh it could get boring at times. There's loads of filler and it takes a long time for the plot to actually progress. Story
...
gets a 6/10
Art - Its Sailor Moon so the art is bound to be beautiful. 10/10
Sound - The sound was also good. I just love the soundtrack that plays during Moon Gorgeous Meditation. 8/10
Characters - Only a few characters get introduced here but instead of talking about them first, I'm gonna get something out of the way that irritated the hell out of me. One of the things this season did that made me so annoyed at her was how she got jealous and possessive over Mamoru over tiny thing. Among other things, she gets jealous over Mamoru when he: helps Chibiusa with her homework, tutors Ami, even offers his umbrella to an old lady (who rejected his help anyways). Heck, there's an ENTIRE EPISODE where she breaks into Rei's house and STALKS HER all because Mamoru was staying at her place after an accident at his place. I know Usagi is a teenager in love and love makes you jealous but come on, that is going too far.
Okay, now that that's out of the way, lets talk about the new characters. Pegasus/Helios was honestly boring and served to give exposition and be a love interest to Chibiusa.
The Amazon Trio were creeps. Especially Tiger's Eye, who even WENT AFTER A LITTLE GIRL.
The Amazoness Quartet were much better. They were actually enjoyable to watch, though I'm a bit salty they didn't become the Asteroid Senshi like in the manga.
Zirconia was pretty boring.
Nehelenia was basically the anime version of the evil Queen from Snow White. The reason she became evil was because she was afraid she'd lose her beauty. I can't really sympathise with that reason. But when she's in on the action, she's really effective.
Characters get a 6/10. Was originally a 5 but I'm only bumping it up because of the Amazoness Quartet.
Enjoyment - Like Sailor Moon R, this season could be a chore to watch at times. I just got so annoyed with Usagi's constant jealousy. And the slow paced plot progress makes this season boring sometimes. 5/10
Overall - I was going to give this season a 5, but again, I bumped it up to a 6 because I just like the Amazoness Quartet that much. They're one of the few redeeming things about this season. Admittedly I am harsh on this season but gosh it could get really frustrating. But that's not to say its bad. There are some good episodes and moments. So I'm giving this season a 6/10

So this is the fan favourite season of Sailor Moon and for good reason. Its got a good story, introduced memorable new characters, and the super from for Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon. This arc in general is probably my favourite in this franchise.
Story - Shortly after the events of R, Rei has an apocalyptic vision. Then the Sailor Soldiers face their new enemies, the Death Busters. They want to steal people's pure heart crystals in order to get the three talismans, which would then summon the Holy Grail. The story for this was really good. It could get intense
...
at times, especially towards the finale. I'm giving the story a 9/10
Art - The art was beautiful as always. 10/10
Sound - As usual, the soundtrack was pretty good. 8/10
Character - Three new Senshi are introduced in this season - Haruka Tenoh, who is Sailor Uranus, Michiru Kaioh who is Sailor Neptune, and Hotaru Tomoe who is Sailor Saturn. Sailor Pluto also returns as Setsuna Meioh and together they make the Outers. I love the Outers so much. Haruka and Michiru especially mean so much to me. It was because of them that I discovered that I was a lesbian. Their romance was so beautiful and I enjoyed every moment they were on screen. My only complaint was how mean they could get. The scene where Haruka steals Usagi's brooch was so unnecessary and mean spirited. And the scene where they say Usagi has no qualifications to be their future Queen.... sheesh I know it was to test her power but still.
Hotaru is my absolute favourite of this season, she's just so precious and deserves all the happiness in the world. Her friendship with Chibiusa was so beautiful.
Speaking of which, Chibiusa returns in this season as Sailor Chibi Moon. She comes back from the future to train to be a Senshi. She was still bratty but she wasn't as bad as she was in R. Her friendship with Hotaru was honestly what made me ultimately love her.
As for the villains, I didn't care much for Kaolinite. Eudial was hilarious with the way she would make her appearance by driving in unusual places. Mimete was pretty annoying. The other three - Tellu, Viluy, and Cyprine - didn't get enough episodes for me to form an opinion on them. I do wish the Witches 5 actually worked as a team once instead of fighting with each other.
As for Souichi Tomoe, I don't understand how they took his manga self, who was abusive to Hotaru and even experimented on her, and made him this sympathetic man who just wanted to save his daughter. Yeah, the anime does this with villains in the manga but given how he was in the manga, I feel Souichi is one of those villains who didn't deserve that.
Mistress 9 was pretty good, its too bad we didn't get to see her much.
Characters get an 8/10.
Enjoyment - I really enjoyed this season and I can definitely see why it is a fan favourite. 9/10
Overall - Sailor Moon S is a great season that introduced a bunch of amazing characters and had a great story. 9/10

WARNING: This review may contain spoilers
Sailor Moon R, the sequel to the original Sailor Moon anime. And I'm not going to lie to you, the first half of this season was a chore to watch. But luckily, it gets good in the second half.
Story - The story for this is decent. The first 13 episodes are a filler arc involving two aliens named Ail and An who want to collect energy for their home, the Doom Tree. Because of their threat, the Sailor Soldiers are revived. The second half is the real story. A child falls from the sky and demands the Silver Crystal
...
from Usagi, claiming that her name IS Usagi Tsukino, which later leads to everyone simply calling her Chibiusa. Later she brainwashes Usagi's family so she can stay with them. An evil organisation called the Black Moon clan is after her because if they get rid of her, the future will be destroyed. Its decent and all. Though one of my complaints lies with Black Lady, who's a good villain but for some reason, they made her have a thing for her father and that's..... not the best. And need I mention the break up arc. Oh God the break up arc. This is the most unnecessary thing in the anime and they made Mamoru such a dickhead for this arc. All communication skills get thrown out of the window. But barring that it is a decent story. Story gets a 7/10.
Art - Its Sailor Moon so of course the art is beautiful. 10/10
Sound - Nothing much to say but the sound was good. I loved the use of La Soldier in the final battle. 8/10.
Character - In the filler arc, we're introduced to Ail and An, two aliens who landed on earth with the Doom Tree, where they live, and they need energy for the tree. Now I would've liked these two if it wasn't for their romantic subplots with Usagi and Mamoru respectively. It was unnecessary and just served to create drama.
In the actual story, we're introduced to Chibiusa, a new main character. I'm not gonna lie, I really disliked her at first. She was bratty and got away with everything she did. In fact, the reason I say this season is a chore to watch was because of her brattiness. And what's even more frustrating is that she got away with everything because she's a child. Like yes, I get it, she's a child who's away from her parents and she's scared. But that doesn't mean all of her actions should be excused. I'm not saying she should be abused or anything, but she should learn that her behavior is wrong. Now I said I disliked her AT FIRST. I do like her now. Also she's MUCH better in the manga.
And once again I need to rant on Mamoru here. So in this season, Mamoru gets dreams that he should stay away with Usagi or something bad will happen to her. So he breaks up with her in the most mean spirited way. He acts like a complete dickhead throughout the break up arc. And later its revealed that MAMORU'S FUTURE SELF gave him those nightmares to test his and Usagi's love which.... you could've done it in other ways than telling your past self to stay away from his girlfriend or she will die.
As for the villains, the Ayakashi sisters were really enjoyable. Rubeus was a dick and I didn't feel sympathy when we was defeated. Esmeraude was pretty but dear lord she could be annoying. Saphir is probably my favourite of the villains simply because of his relationship with Petz in that one episode (btw Saphir and Petz deserved SO MUCH BETTER). Demande is a douchebag, I hate him so much and I can't fathom why people would actually ship him with Usagi after what he did to her. 6/10
Enjoyment - This season can be such a chore to watch sometimes, but the final few episodes are amazing. 6/10
Overall - This is probably my least favourite season of the 90s anime. The only reason I'm not rating it lower is because of the final few episodes. It would've been MUCH better if Chibiusa's brattiness was toned down and the break up arc never existed at all. 7/10

WARNING: This review may contain spoilers
Ah, Sailor Moon. The show that got me into magical girls and into anime in general. I first watched it when I was 15 and recently rewatched it.
Story - Its the first season of Sailor Moon so its a good start. The story revolves around Usagi Tsukino and four other girls - Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, and Minako Aino - as they become Sailor Guardians and fight monsters to protect the Earth. They also have to search for the Moon Princess. Its a decent story. My one complaint is how they made it so obvious that the
...
Moon Princess was Usagi. They have the same hairstyle and same voice, and no one put two and two together. So I give the story a 7/10
<b>Art - The art was so beautiful. This is honestly one of the most aesthetically pleasing anime I've ever seen. The backgrounds are just gorgeous. Its a 10/10 for me.
Sound - The sound was also good. Nothing much to say here, its a 7/10
Character - The characters were good too. Usagi was a relatable protagonist. A lot think she's annoying for her constant crying and running from battles, but I think it was realistic for a 14 year old who was just given superpowers and expected to fight monsters to be scared. Ami, Makoto, and Minako were nice. The two characters I really have to rant about are Rei and Mamoru
Okay, so I like Rei in the 90s anime, but my God they really butchered her. In the manga, she was a stoic girl with a distrust for men due to her father abandoning her. She may tease Usagi occasionally but never too much. In the anime... not only did they make her boy crazy, but they made her pick fights with Usagi over the pettiest things. Her bickering with Usagi could be funny at first but then it gets tiring real fast. Seeing it for five seasons is really tiring. And sometimes, it isn't just teasing, its just borderline bullying.
And Mamoru, in the manga was a bit of a jerk but we also saw his soft side. He genuinely cared for Usagi and wanted to help her. He was actually useful as Tuxedo Mask. Here, all he does is throw roses and give speeches. And his romance with Usagi is not convincing either. They hated each other for most of the season, then when they find out about each others' secret identities AND about their past life, they're suddenly in love? There's just no chemistry. And no, arguing is not chemistry.
Now for the villains. Queen Beryl didn't really do much until the finale so I didn't care too much for her. Jadeite was boring so I didn't care for him either. Nephrite's storyline was tragic but looking back at it as an adult, I can't help but feel concerned that he's like.... centuries old and reciprocates a 14 year old's crush on him. Zoisite and Kunzite were pretty good.
Overall, I give the characters a 7/10
Enjoyment - I did enjoy this show but I will admit it can get pretty boring with all the fillers. I give it a 7/10
Overall - This was my first ever magical girl anime. Even if its not the best, it still does hold a special place in my heart. Without this show, the magical girl genre would be really different. So I give this anime an 8/10
