"...Don't make a name for yourself as a cyberpunk by how you live. Make a name by how you die."
Produced by the creators of BNA and Kill La Kill, Studio Trigger, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a 10 episode jampacked, ride or die Netflix original anime series that has you bask in the amazing setting of future dystopian metropolis known as Night City.
Story : 7/10
There's not much to say, David Martinez goes from your everyday kid to an outlaw trying to find his place in the big picture. The pacing was pretty fast, but given that there's only 10 episodes, it's not that hard to know
...
what's going on. The ending was okay, could have been other routes they could have led to, despite all this I have no issue with it. Personally, have not played Cyberpunk 2077 but it seems like there's no issue with that when watching this anime as some comments online have theorized that Edgerunners takes place before the actual game.
Art : 10/10
Absolutely beautiful. The character designs, Night City's environment, the action scenes, the impactful scenes, ANY OF THE SCENES look breathtaking(not a Keanu Reeves reference I swear this is just how I was wording it)! Trigger has gone above and beyond, not holding back when it comes to the cyborg augments that people have equipped to them. The action scenes go hard, just letting guts fly all over the place. The emotional scenes are framed beautifully, with shots that really just have you slump in your chair and watch in awe.
Characters: 8/10
All the characters just exude personality. They don't have your regular cookie cutter anime body type, some are round, others are skinny, others are short, and some of them just have long arms. The character design is probably going to be the main part of them, since this series is only 10 episodes, you won't have as much time to get attached to the beloved Edgerunners cast unless one of their gimmicky crazy personalities catch you.
Sound : 8/10
All of the sound effects popped. Guns firing, bullets crashing into concrete and metal, tires screeching against the road's pavement from flooring the pedal, hovercrafts flying next to trains, just all of the sounds were pretty unique and just really added more. The OST was really good and further cemented the types of vibes you'd expect from a gory series like this.
Enjoyment : 9/10
Even though I rounded the points up and it was 8.4 in total I gave it a 9, Edgerunners really just has you hungering for what your dream is, I sat in my chair thinking 'Man... am I doing this for myself? Or am just doing this to please others.' I really related to the main character, David, being in a time of my life where I'm just unsure of what I really want, and after watching this, I can safely say that it's okay that I don't know what I want, because eventually, I'll find it. Really weird seeing as how a series I binged in three days had calmed me down, but I think it's safe to say that Trigger doesn't disappoint and that most people(that are willing to see gore and sexual content) will enjoy or at least appreciate Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
