Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, like Elfen Lied, engages the viewer with both heartful and complicated character relations, but gradually twists into a dark tale and reveals the horrific, heartbreaking, and psychologically thrilling truth about everything. Both aesthetically and thematically, Gankutsuou bears a very similar chaos and insanity of a complex love story gone unfathomably dark. Not to mention, the artistic, textural design within Gankutsuou's animation very much resembles Gustav Klimt's painting, "The Kiss," as symbolized in Elfen Lied.

Similar to Doukyuusei, this anime features: - two male protagonists who are very different from each other; one is smart, reserved, wealthy, and a bit of a loner, while the other is eccentric, lively, poor, and a bit of a troublemaker. The two of them are classmates, and they are both misunderstood. As a result of their opposite personalities and lifestyles, they foil one another and grow closer as the story progresses. - musical themes. The two male protagonists develop their friendship through their common passion for jazz music. - plenty of feels and romance. Unlike Doukyuusei, it's not shounen ai, but you can certainly view it that way~ In general, both Doukyuusei and Sakamichi no Apollon are rather light, fun, and upbeat (save for the drama, of course), and they effortlessly whisk your heart away into their beautiful world of love, youth, and music!

This OVA is also shounen ai! It has a male protagonist who, similar to Sajou Rihito, is rather lonesome and troubled, especially after losing his beloved grandfather. In his state of grief, he goes to the ocean and “falls” into the water just as he remembers that he can’t swim. Miraculously, he is saved by a beautiful merman, who moves in with the boy and continues to save him in all sorts of ways… What this OVA and Doukyuusei especially have in common are their unique, artistic animation styles, and their utterly gripping and moving developments in both romance and drama.
