Being a huge fan of both studio Shaft's works and the Fate franchise, I came in expecting a masterpiece. Well after finishing the show I must say that it surely wasn't one, far from it, but oh was it entertaining.
Story: 6/10
Well the story itself was pretty bland. It, for the most part, follows an episodic story telling where the main characters hunt down the masters trough some type of Battle Tower-ish system. Unlike Fate/Zero or stay night where the goal is to get the holy grail, Fate/Extra: Last Encore is all about Hakuno Kishinami, a random fellow who accidentally becomes a master, yes just
...
like Shirou, and wants to learn more about his unknown past. At least the show offers decent character development and manages to progress smoothly.
Art: 7/10
Taking account that it's made by Shaft I need to say that the art could've been so much better. Sure the art was good, especially in episodes 6 and 7, but from the creators of the Monogatari series and Madoka Magica it should've and could've been way better. Still in the later half of the show, the artwork was beautiful. But the overly large eyes and the redesign of the stay night characters made me take the score down a notch.
Sound: 9.5/10
Wow now that was great. The soundtrack is made out of so many different genres, yet is able to nail everyone of them, it kind of reminded me of fe3h's ost. From outstanding classical music in sad moments and flashbacks to some electro during episode 8 I need to say that me ears were jubilant hearing the music in Fate/Extra.
Character: 5/10
The cast was made out of 90% new characters and 10% old characters that were taken from older instalments of the franchise, mostly Fate/stay night. The 90% was really bland in contrary to the other versions of Fate and the 10% may have been taken from other editions, they have been deprived of all their unique personalities, except for Shinji, he's still a dick. But like I said previously, there still is a lot of character development, mostly because we closely follow the main cast and only the main cast which also serves as a double edged sword since the secondary characters are mostly hollow and have no personality, for the exception of Alice and Dan Blackmore.
Enjoyment: 8/10
As bad as the show was in an objective lens, I personally really had fun watching it. Sure it was far from perfect, but it was really entertaining seeing Fate tackled in a different way than the other mainstream adaptations.
Overall: 7/10
Generally speaking the show wasn't that bad, at least not as other people make it out to be. Would I recommend it? Sure why not! If you loved ufotable's take on the franchise and you crave for more of Type-Moon's lesser know creations, Fate/Extra: Last Encore is worth the watch even if it's not as good as your Fate/Zero or stay night.
