I roughly remember many years ago that this anime was my somewhat introduction into the shoujo genre being one of the first romance anime's I indulged in.
I won't deny the fact that it had me absolutely intrigued at first, I watched the whole thing, even though I was young I still found myself frustrated with how poorly Kotoko and Naoki acted.
At one point I remember myself wanting Kotoko to fall in love with Kinnosuke because of how absurd Naoki acted. Although the writer drew me back in and I fell in love watching whatever love they had on the screen.
Kotoko's character is sad
...
to watch now that I'm older, I find myself noticing all the little things that I couldn't see before. The blatant shunning Naoki did, the back and forth misunderstandings, which I'll excuse since that happens to be the epitome of the shoujo romance genre. Most of all, the lack of actual genuine love that I would've liked to see blossom between the two.
Compared to back then and now I would still agree with myself that they shouldn't have pursed a relationship with each other.
But one thing I can say that this is an old gem, something that pushed me further to explore the romance genre in search of something better, and what my younger self actually enjoyed in spite of it's flaws.
