While I’ve never been a big fan of JoJo’s after part 2 due to “episodicness”, I gave this part another try after dropping it 3 and a half years ago. My friend influenced me to as he loved part 5. At first, it seemed like it was gonna be really good with returning characters and an actual plot, but the more you watch, the more you realize it’s more like part 3 and not part 4.
Giorno is easily the worst JoJo, as he’s never given any development, neither is the rest of the crew. Giorno wants to be a Gang Star and his goal starts
...
with killing the boss. They kill the boss, and we skip the whole development of him becoming a gang star and just flash forward to him being worshipped. And for being Dio’s son, nothing stems from that. His relationship is unnecessary and just an excuse. The rest of the crew has no real goal and some of them die purely to raise the stakes, except we don’t care about them and it doesn’t affect the crew, so it barely raises the stakes.
The fights also aren’t very good. Some are fun and interesting, like the train fight and the airplane fight, but most are just above average and don’t add anything. While part 3 and 5 have similar “episodicness”, around a third or half of the fights of part 3 added to the plot of the arrow and Dio, but in part 5, only around 3 or 4 fights add to the plot and Diavolo. Also, why is Diavolo’s stand just Dio’s stand but it works in a slightly different way? Furthermore, the part didn’t really connect to any other parts until the very end, and it felt like the connection was a pure afterthought. And another thought, why is there a flashback to a stand fight that adds nothing to the plot? Ruined the finale for me.
Something disappointing was how it stayed episodic the whole time. Why do important plot points happen, they have to go somewhere and they’re just randomly stopped by a stand fight that adds nothing? The second half of part 4 had a consistent villain with Kira with no unnecessary stand fights and stakes raised correctly. This caused me to believe the second half would be similar because the author learned from part 3, but we get the total opposite of this. Also, everyone being close to the brink of death in normal stand fights but then not dying by random a*spulling was dumb but that’s an overall problem in JoJo’s.
The whole plot revolves around protecting Trish in the first half, while the second half is killing Diavolo. Trish is extremely underutilized in the entire part. I understand why in the first half, but there should be almost no reason for it in the second half. She gets one cool stand fight and then almost never uses her stand again which is disappointing. She was interesting and should have been used a lot more.
What I did like: When Fugo left the crew, he never came back. I was fully expecting him to come back to the crew for the final fight just to die, When this didn’t happen, I was estatic. It showed some depth in his character, and is the reason why Fugo is probably my favorite from the crew. Like I said, some stand fights were good. The final fight was genuinely good and interesting because of the buildup Diavolo had to being revealed. Doppio/Diavolo’s split personality was amazing and I was a huge fan of seeing it. Diavolo overall was an interesting villain. The idea of Buccelatti dying when he first fought Diavolo and his soul going back into his body after leaving was interesting, though I wish more was done with it. It was somewhat entertaining for the most part.
Overall: While I was excited because I constantly heard that this is the best part, this is definitely the worst part by far for me. While I shouldn’t have finished it, discussing it with my friend was mainly the only reason why I kept going. The small positives and somewhat entertainment factor are the only reason why I didn’t give it a 5/10. I don’t know if I’ll watch part 6 after this. Disappointing all around.
