“If you ever feel like dying to help the universe, just let me know. I’ll be waiting.”
10 years later and madoka is still a masterpiece, a major milestone for an entire anime genre and a life changer for many people, myself included.
since this series is now about 10 years old i rewatched madoka and enjoyed the show as much as the first time watching it, if not more.
me in my teenage years came across this series at a time when i didn't knew at all what direction i wanted to go in life and was searching for myself and my
...
own identity. so for another person this series may not inpact them like it did me.
Story:
when this anime first came out, shaft marketed it as a normal sweet and innocent magical girl series but from episode 3 on, the show abruptly changed with an unexpected brutal death scene. madoka is not afraid to address dark and deep subject matters presented in intricate but well thought out scenarios. From love that becomes an obsession and the everlasting hope even in the worst scenarios to the dissonance between our wishes and the state of the world that creates despair. the series even adresses issues like our questionable treatment of farm animals in our society and the question of who decides what is ethical and what is not. The story has been given enough time to unfold which may seem too slow for some people. The plot is kept very mysterious for a long time and piece by piece you learn more and more about the story until you can see the whole picture. yes dark magical girl series existed before madoka but it's impossible to denye what a big influence this show was for the dark magical girl genre. unfortunately, many shallow dark magical girls series later took inspiration from madoka and out of that came a bunch of bad and overly edgy shows that are just brutal and dark for the sake of being brutal and dark. they totally miss the point and appeal of their predecessors and are instead a cheap copy without having a deeper message.
Art:
I'm always blown away after watching clips from the anime again. The artstyle is very special and incredibly cute accompanied by one of the most beautiful character designs I've ever seen. Especially madoka and homura. which gives the anime a characteristic look. Studio Shaft has mixed different animation syles and artforms to distinguish the witch world from the normal world in an artistic way. The whole look of the anime is very experimental in a very good way because it has an indescribable atmosphere that no other anime has. And the fluid animation is in most parts comprable to cinema movies. I can often hardly believe that this is a tv anime. It is studio shaft after all. do i need to say more.
Sound:
Madoka Magica's opening "Connect", by ClariS is a sweet jpop song that fits well with the anime and the ending song "Magia", by Kalafina sounds dark and serious in contrast to the opening. I always get goosebumps from the ending not only because I am a big fan of the music group but also because the song lyrically fits the anime and is very melodic. The whole anime is atmospherically underlined by a beautiful soundtrack that is bombastic and out of this world, especially in the action scenes. Hearing a huge orchestra while watching a beautiful fight scene is indescribable. Also, all the voice actors do a phenomenal job by adding depth and nuance to every scene. Especially Katou Emiri as kyubey. She manages to create a creepy atmosphere whenever kyubey speaks with his monotone and emotionless but terrifying voice.
Character:
I apologize in advance if this section gets very personal.
Not only are the designs incredible but all the characters are well written. Each girl has a believable personality and their personal problems in life that are portrayed so realistically that their story totally pulls you in, especially our two main characters. When I watched the anime I myself was a confused and insecure teenager who was still figuring things out about oneself. Madoka was a very important part of my youth and made me realize a lot about myself. Especially about my sexuality. Seeing how much the two would do for each other and the bond they have with one another is inspiering. the themes and messages in this show changed me forever. every character has influenced me very much. they are all believable and make some mistakes but are still likeble. its so beautiful How the relationship of sakaya and kyouko totally changes and you can't help but feel for them. The characters of this anime make you think about a lot of things and their exciting stories and conflicts are full of plot twists and always leave you on the edge of your feet. It never gets boring.
Enjoyment
it was a weird and incomparable experience that will make you laugh and maybe cry. Many people say that this anime is like a drug trip. I think that sums it up well. As studio shaft is known for its weird and special style. This series will trap you in its atmosphere and won't let you go so fast.
Overall:
Studio shaft has done its best to use all the potential out of the magical girl genre and it shows. I can recommend this series to any anime fan. It is short and exciting until the end. If you then also watch the film it becomes a perfect expirience. I hope this anime will be known as a classic for a long time to come. Puella madoka magica is without a doubt my absolute favorite anime. And it always will be.
