This anime centers on a group of delinquent students in a school for people who have departed from the mortal realm. By delinquent I don't simply mean skipping classes or not paying attention in class. No. These kids bring guns and medieval polearms to class, and no one else cares. Why? Because the Matrix has them.
That's right, we are talking about a virtual-reality computer world. A Day at School RPG. This is the premise for this show. Delinquent students arm themselves with weapons and skirmish with a silver haired girl who uses Protoss Zealot psi blades, among other hacked abilities.

Now, if you're coming to see this with (insert previous Key work) in mind, then based on the premise above, you should definitely be having second thoughts. The main idea here, and I will point this out now, is that THIS IS NOT AS SERIOUS AS WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND.
This is the core reason for the conflicting review scores below, you know. People coming here to watch this expected some serious drama like clannad and air would of course be disappointed. This show, believe it or not, is focused more on Comedy and less on Drama and Action. The comedy in this show is excellent, and this is augmented by the comic-relief side-characters. Yes, this another major gripe about this show: that the characters were under-developed. Well, now that I have shown you that this series focuses on Comedy rather than Drama, I hope now you know why there were alot of side characters and why they weren't developed as much.
And this goes for the story as well. I'm sure alot of us would agree that parts of the storyline is kinda corny. But I don't see it that way. You see, I am a relativistic person and would promptly point out that there are plenty of other anime which lack a storyline completely, and try to come up with some end-all monologue in the last 3 episodes. Thankfully this anime is not like that. The story is good; it is very interesting per the action aspect of the show and I was not bored with this storyline at all (but some parts were corny I had to admit.) Watch the first episode of this, and then go watch the first episode of kobato. Maybe you can get what I mean.
At this point I'm just going down the review list. Art, Sound, Character, Enjoyment. I'm not big on Art and Sound. Art is good for me as long as it satisfies a minimum quality, which old shows like DBZ prolly fail on. As for sound, well, I can say that there are alot of insert and concert songs in this show, which does fit the occasion well. People may enjoy it if they wish. While skipping these I can tell they were very well done, and the Art during these concert performances seems to be really good, but, well, I'm not big on sound. The OP, well, that is a nice piano piece, but my music tastes tend to be very narrow. Don't mind me.
I have already given y'all my opinion on the minor characters, but let's now discuss the Main Characters. We have amnesiac red-haired male lead, Suzumiya Haruhi's reincarnation, and silver-haired Protoss Zealot. Apologies for the nicknames, though. These main characters were all well-done, meaning that they get flashbacks and dynamic character development as they realize certain things and interact with one another. Although their personalities are definitely familiar to veteran animewatchers, especially the reincarnation. Now that is really literally a reincarnation of someone else (minus the superpowers).
With an open mind I liked this anime and thought it was great. The comedy in particular is something I would recommend to my real-life friends, but I guess I would also recommend you readers to this show. This show was really funny, and I enjoyed it for that and, to a lesser extent, enjoyed the plot and drama elements. For those of you who thought the storyline was mediocre: WHY SO SERIOUS?
